Implementable Wireless Access for B3G Networks - III: Complexity Reducing Transceiver Structures
This article presents a comprehensive overview of some of the research conducted within Mobile VCE’s Core Wireless Access Research Programme,1 a key focus of which has naturally been on MIMO transceivers. The series of articles offers a coherent view of how the work was structured and comprises a compilation of material that has been presented in detail elsewhere (see references within the article). In this article MIMO channel measurements, analysis, and modeling, which were presented previously in the first article in this series of four, are utilized to develop compact and distributed antenna arrays. Parallel activities led to research into low-complexity MIMO single-user spacetime coding techniques, as well as SISO and MIMO multi-user CDMA-based transceivers for B3G systems. As well as feeding into the industry’s in-house research program, significant extensions of this work are now in hand, within Mobile VCE’s own core activity, aiming toward securing major improvements in delivery efficiency in future wireless systems through crosslayer operation
A modified Newton-Raphson analysis of flight measurements of the trailing vortices of a heavy jet transport
A modified Newton-Raphson method has been used to determine the parameters in equations describing the vortex flow to obtain a best match with flight measurements of the flow behind the C-5A airplane. The flight measurements were made using a specially instrumented T-33 airplane which passed as closely as possible to the centers of the trailing vortices at several distances behind the C-5A airplane. The flight measurements were transformed to flow velocity relative to an inertial frame of reference. The assumed form of the flow consisted of the superposition of two counterrotating, finite core vortices. The positions of the vortex centers, their total circulation, the effective eddy viscosity and measurement bias were the parameters adjusted. The assumed form of vortex flow fit well the measured velocities for the numerous sets of data, both flaps up and down for the C-5A airplane. The resulting values of total circulation, however, were about two-thirds that expected of a wing with an elliptical loading. A partial explanation of the less than expected circulation is a dip in the spanwise lift distribution at the airplane's center line. The distance between the trailing vortices at the smallest times encountered is somewhat less than that expected for an elliptical wing loading
K-shell x-ray spectroscopy of atomic nitrogen
Absolute {\it K}-shell photoionization cross sections for atomic nitrogen
have been obtained from both experiment and state-of-the-art theoretical
techniques. Due to the difficulty of creating a target of neutral atomic
nitrogen, no high-resolution {\it K}-edge spectroscopy measurements have been
reported for this important atom. Interplay between theory and experiment
enabled identification and characterization of the strong
resonance features throughout the threshold region. An experimental value

Ultracold, radiative charge transfer in hybrid Yb ion - Rb atom traps
Ultracold hybrid ion-atom traps offer the possibility of microscopic
manipulation of quantum coherences in the gas using the ion as a probe.
However, inelastic processes, particularly charge transfer can be a significant
process of ion loss and has been measured experimentally for the Yb ion
immersed in a Rb vapour. We use first-principles quantum chemistry codes to
obtain the potential energy curves and dipole moments for the lowest-lying
energy states of this complex. Calculations for the radiative decay processes
cross sections and rate coefficients are presented for the total decay
processes. Comparing the semi-classical Langevin approximation with the quantum
approach, we find it provides a very good estimate of the background at higher
energies. The results demonstrate that radiative decay mechanisms are important
over the energy and temperature region considered. In fact, the Langevin
process of ion-atom collisions dominates cold ion-atom collisions. For spin
dependent processes \cite{kohl13} the anisotropic magnetic dipole-dipole
interaction and the second-order spin-orbit coupling can play important roles,
inducing couplingbetween the spin and the orbital motion. They measured the
spin-relaxing collision rate to be approximately 5 orders of magnitude higher
than the charge-exchange collision rate \cite{kohl13}. Regarding the measured
radiative charge transfer collision rate, we find that our calculation is in
very good agreement with experiment and with previous calculations.
Nonetheless, we find no broad resonances features that might underly a strong
isotope effect. In conclusion, we find, in agreement with previous theory that

Molecular dynamics simulations of an anomalous response of diamond to shock compression
We performed molecular dynamics simulations of shock wave propagation in diamond in the [110] crystallographic direction and observed an anomalous response of the material. This regime is characterized by absence of plastic deformation in the intermediate interval of shock wave intensities between shear-deformation and overdriven rehybridization shock wave regimes
A flight investigation with a STOL airplane flying curved, descending instrument approach paths
A flight investigation using a De Havilland Twin Otter airplane was conducted to determine the configurations of curved, 6 deg descending approach paths which would provide minimum airspace usage within the requirements for acceptable commercial STOL airplane operations. Path configurations with turns of 90 deg, 135 deg, and 180 deg were studied; the approach airspeed was 75 knots. The length of the segment prior to turn, the turn radius, and the length of the final approach segment were varied. The relationship of the acceptable path configurations to the proposed microwave landing system azimuth coverage requirements was examined
Neutron capture rates and r-process nucleosynthesis
Simulations of r-process nucleosynthesis require nuclear physics information
for thousands of neutron-rich nuclear species from the line of stability to the
neutron drip line. While arguably the most important pieces of nuclear data for
the r-process are the masses and beta decay rates, individual neutron capture
rates can also be of key importance in setting the final r-process abundance
pattern. Here we consider the influence of neutron capture rates in forming the

Endoscopic endonasal management of recurrent petrous apex cholesterol granuloma.
Petrous apex cholesterol granulomas (PACG) are uncommon lesions. Recurrence following transcranial or endonasal approaches to aerate the cyst occurs in up to 60% of cases. We describe the technical nuances pertinent to the endonasal endoscopic management of a recurrent symptomatic PACG and review the literature. A 19-year-old woman presented with a recurrent right abducens nerve paresis. Four months prior, she underwent an endonasal transsphenoidal surgery (TSS) for drainage of a symptomatic PACG. Current imaging documented recurrence of the right PACG. Transsphenoidal and infrapetrous approaches were performed to obtain a wider bony opening along the petrous apex and drain the cyst. A Doyle splint was inserted into the cyst's cavity and extended out into the sphenoid, maintaining patency during the healing process. Three months after surgery, the splint was removed endoscopically, allowing visualization of a patent cylindrical communication between both aerated cavities. The patient remains symptom- and recurrence-free. Endoscopic endonasal surgery must be adapted to manage recurrent PACG. A TSS may not be sufficient. An infrapetrous approach with wider bony opening, extensive removal of the cyst's anterior wall, and use of a stent are indicated for the treatment of recurrent PACG and to prevent recurrences
