    Chronic venous leg ulcer care – are we missing a vital piece of the jigsaw?

    This project explored the lived experiences of patients with leg ulcers to ascertain impact on their quality of life. The aim was to develop a new Leg Ulcer Consultation Template (LUCT). Unstructured interviews were undertaken. Themes raised as significant were incorporated into a checklist and used to assess the extent and depth of exploration during the consultations. Several key themes were identified, including the dominance of pain. Observations revealed that issues emphasised as important by participants were not raised during consultations. A new consultation template was developed. The results of this study reveal that participants have concerns far beyond their actual wound care. Application of the new consultation template may go some way to redress the balance of the consultation

    Electrochemical Properties of a Verdazyl Radical in Room Temperature Ionic Liquids

    © 2020 CSIRO. Room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) have been widely investigated as alternative electrochemical solvents for a range of dissolved species over the past two decades. However, the behaviour of neutral radicals dissolved in RTILs is relatively unexplored. In this work, the electrochemistry of a stable verdazyl radical-1,5-dimethyl-3-phenyl-6-oxoverdazyl (MPV)-has been studied on a platinum thin-film electrode using cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry in 10 different RTILs. The organic solvent propylene carbonate is also employed as a comparison. The nature of the solvent system was found to have a large effect on the electrochemical behaviour, particularly on the reduction reaction of the verdazyl radical. Chronoamperometry on a microdisk electrode was used to calculate diffusion coefficients (D), and plots of D versus the inverse of viscosity were linear, suggesting typical hydrodynamic diffusional characteristics of the radical, in line with the behaviour of dissolved neutral and charged compounds (e.g. ferrocene and cobaltocenium) in RTILs. Overall, this study demonstrates that different RTILs have a significant influence on the electrochemistry of MPV, and therefore careful selection of the solvent system for electrochemical applications is advised

    This article, the first of two, summarises a study that explored the lived experiences of patients with leg ulcers and the impact of this condition on their quality of life. The study had four study phases; phases 1 and 2 employed qualitative methods and are reported here. Initially, unstructured interviews were held; these revealed significant issues for the patients including the dominance of pain, issues relating to exudate and odour, social isolation and psychological effects. A checklist based on these issues was completed by the researcher during observations of routine care for these same patients; this revealed the extent and depth to which these matters were addressed. On many occasions, significant issues were not disclosed or explored during consultations. These findings confirmed that participants with chronic venous leg ulcers have concerns far beyond wound care

    Flow field visualization of entangled polybutadiene solutions under nonlinear viscoelastic flow conditions

    Using self-designed particle visualization instrumentation, startup shear and step-strain tests were conducted under a series of systematically varied rheological and geometrical conditions, and the velocity profiles in three different well-entangled polybutadiene/oligomer solutions were obtained. For startup shear tests, in the regime of entanglement densities up to 89 and nominal reptation Weissenberg numbers up to 18.6, we generally observe either wall slip and a linear velocity/strain profile or simply the linear profile with no wall slip unless a massive edge fracture or instability has occurred in the sample. Meanwhile, step-strain tests conducted at similar and higher step Weissenberg numbers revealed little particle motion upon cessation. These results lead us to a conclusion that there is no compelling evidence of shear banding or nonquiescent relaxation in the range of entanglement density and Wi investigated; we interpret the results to imply that any observed banding probably correlates with edge effects.National Science Foundation (U.S.) (Grant DMR-0934305

    Competitive outreach in the 21st century: Why we need conservation marketing

    AbstractAddressing impacts from human activities requires the change of current practices. However, reaching a target audience about conservation issues and influencing their behaviour is not easy in a world where people are continually bombarded with information, and distractions are permanently available. Although not typically considered to be part of the conservation science toolbox, marketing techniques were designed in the commercial sector to identify and influence human preferences and behaviour by placing target audiences at the core of the marketing process. It thus seems reasonable that the same marketing principles and tools could and should be used to address pressing conservation issues. In this manuscript, we provide an introduction to the main objectives of marketing and illustrate how these can be applied to conservation and animal welfare issues. To that end we offer two examples: Project Ocean, where a major UK retailer joined forces with the Zoological Society of London to influence consumer behaviour around seafood; and Blackfish, which coupled social media with an award-winning documentary to create a discussion around the welfare of large cetaceans in captivity. Without the ability to influence human behaviour, a conservationists' role will likely be limited to that of describing the loss of biodiversity and the decline of the environment. We thus hope that conservation practitioners can embrace marketing as a fundamental component of the conservation toolbox

    Game of Stones:feasibility randomised controlled trial of how to engage men with obesity in text message and incentive interventions for weight loss

    Objectives To examine the acceptability and feasibility of narrative text messages with or without financial incentives to support weight loss for men. Design Individually randomised three-arm feasibility trial with 12 months’ follow-up. Setting Two sites in Scotland with high levels of disadvantage according to Scottish Index for Multiple Deprivation (SIMD). Participants Men with obesity (n=105) recruited through community outreach and general practitioner registers. Interventions Participants randomised to: (A) narrative text messages plus financial incentive for 12 months (short message service (SMS)+I), (B) narrative text messages for 12 months (SMS only), or (C) waiting list control. Outcomes Acceptability and feasibility of recruitment, retention, intervention components and trial procedures assessed by analysing quantitative and qualitative data at 3, 6 and 12 months. Results 105 men were recruited, 60% from more disadvantaged areas (SIMD quintiles 1 or 2). Retention at 12 months was 74%. Fewer SMS+I participants (64%) completed 12-month assessments compared with SMS only (79%) and control (83%). Narrative texts were acceptable to many men, but some reported negative reactions. No evidence emerged that level of disadvantage was related to acceptability of narrative texts. Eleven SMS+I participants (31%) successfully met or partially met weight loss targets. The cost of the incentive per participant was £81.94 (95% CI £34.59 to £129.30). Incentives were acceptable, but improving health was reported as the key motivator for weight loss. All groups lost weight (SMS+I: −2.51 kg (SD=4.94); SMS only: −1.29 kg (SD=5.03); control: −0.86 kg (SD=5.64) at 12 months). Conclusions This three-arm weight management feasibility trial recruited and retained men from across the socioeconomic spectrum, with the majority from areas of disadvantage, was broadly acceptable to most participants and feasible to deliver

    Geochemical approaches to the quantification of dispersed volcanic ash in marine sediment

    Volcanic ash has long been recognized in marine sediment, and given the prevalence of oceanic and continental arc volcanism around the globe in regard to widespread transport of ash, its presence is nearly ubiquitous. However, the presence/absence of very fine-grained ash material, and identification of its composition in particular, is challenging given its broad classification as an “aluminosilicate” component in sediment. Given this challenge, many studies of ash have focused on discrete layers (that is, layers of ash that are of millimeter-to-centimeter or greater thickness, and their respective glass shards) found in sequences at a variety of locations and timescales and how to link their presence with a number of Earth processes. The ash that has been mixed into the bulk sediment, known as dispersed ash, has been relatively unstudied, yet represents a large fraction of the total ash in a given sequence. The application of a combined geochemical and statistical technique has allowed identification of this dispersed ash as part of the original ash contribution to the sediment. In this paper, we summarize the development of these geochemical/statistical techniques and provide case studies from the quantification of dispersed ash in the Caribbean Sea, equatorial Pacific Ocean, and northwest Pacific Ocean. These geochemical studies (and their sedimentological precursors of smear slides) collectively demonstrate that local and regional arc-related ash can be an important component of sedimentary sequences throughout large regions of the ocean
