    Mott transition in two-dimensional frustrated compounds

    The phase diagrams of isotropic and anisotropic triangular lattices with local Coulomb interactions are evaluated within cluster dynamical mean field theory. As a result of partial geometric frustration in the anisotropic lattice, short range correlations are shown to give rise to reentrant behavior which is absent in the fully frustrated isotropic limit. The qualitative features of the phase diagrams including the critical temperatures are in good agreement with experimental data for the layered organic charge transfer salts kappa-(BEDT-TTF)_2Cu[N(CN)_2]Cl and kappa-(BEDT-TTF)_2Cu_2(CN)_3.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Dynamical properties of a strongly correlated model for quarter-filled layered organic molecular crystals

    The dynamical properties of an extended Hubbard model, which is relevant to quarter-filled layered organic molecular crystals, are analyzed. We have computed the dynamical charge correlation function, spectral density, and optical conductivity using Lanczos diagonalization and large-N techniques. As the ratio of the nearest-neighbour Coulomb repulsion, V, to the hopping integral, t, increases there is a transition from a metallic phase to a charge ordered phase. Dynamical properties close to the ordering transition are found to differ from the ones expected in a conventional metal. Large-N calculations display an enhancement of spectral weight at low frequencies as the system is driven closer to the charge ordering transition in agreement with Lanczos calculations. As V is increased the charge correlation function displays a plasmon-like mode which, for wavevectors close to (pi,pi), increases in amplitude and softens as the charge ordering transition is approached. We propose that inelastic X-ray scattering be used to detect this mode. Large-N calculations predict superconductivity with dxy symmetry close to the ordering transition. We find that this is consistent with Lanczos diagonalization calculations, on lattices of 20 sites, which find that the binding energy of two holes becomes negative close to the charge ordering transition.Comment: 22 pages, 16 eps figures; caption of Fig. 5 correcte

    Majorana Spin Liquids on a two-leg ladder

    We realize a gapless Majorana Orbital Liquid (MOL) using orbital degrees of freedom and also an SU(2)-invariant Majorana Spin Liquid (MSL) using both spin and orbital degrees of freedom in Kitaev-type models on a 2-leg ladder. The models are exactly solvable by Kitaev's parton approach, and we obtain long-wavelength descriptions for both Majorana liquids. The MOL has one gapless mode and power law correlations in energy at incommensuare wavevectors, while the SU(2) MSL has three gapless modes and power law correlations in spin, spin-nematic, and local energy observables. We study the stability of such states to perturbations away from the exactly solvable points. We find that both MOL and MSL can be stable against allowed short-range parton interactions. We also argue that both states persist upon allowing Z2Z_2 gauge field fluctuations, in that the number of gapless modes is retained, although with an expanded set of contributions to observables compared to the free parton mean field.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures.     Ferromagnetism, paramagnetism and a Curie-Weiss metal in an electron doped Hubbard model on a triangular lattice

    Motivated by the unconventional properties and rich phase diagram of NaxCoO2 we consider the electronic and magnetic properties of a two-dimensional Hubbard model on an isotropic triangular lattice doped with electrons away from half-filling. Dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) calculations predict that for negative inter-site hopping amplitudes (t<0) and an on-site Coulomb repulsion, U, comparable to the bandwidth, the system displays properties typical of a weakly correlated metal. In contrast, for t>0 a large enhancement of the effective mass, ferromagnetism and a Curie-Weiss magnetic susceptibility are found in a broad electron doping range. Our observation of Nagaoka ferromagnetism is consistent with the A-type antiferromagnetism (i.e. ferromagnetic layers stacked antiferromagnetically) observed in neutron scattering experiments on NaxCoO2. We propose that `Curie-Weiss metal' phase observed in NaxCoO2 is a consequence of the crossover from ``bad metal'' with incoherent quasiparticles at temperatures T>T* and Fermi liquid behavior with enhanced parameters below T*, where T* is a low energy coherence scale induced by strong local Coulomb electron correlations. We propose a model which contains the charge ordering phenomena observed in the system which, we propose, drives the system close to the Mott insulating phase even at large dopings.Comment: 24 pages, 15 figures; accepted for publication in Phys.     How linear features alter predator movement and the functional\ud response

    In areas of oil and gas exploration, seismic lines have been reported to alter the movement patterns of wolves (Canis lupus). We developed a mechanistic first passage time model, based on an anisotropic elliptic partial differential equation, and used this to explore how wolf movement responses to seismic lines influence the encounter rate of the wolves with their prey. The model was parametrized using 5 min GPS location data. These data showed that wolves travelled faster on seismic lines and had a higher probability of staying on a seismic line once they were on it. We simulated wolf movement on a range of seismic line densities and drew implications for the rate of predator–prey interactions as described by the functional response. The functional response exhibited a more than linear increase with respect to prey density (type III) as well as interactions with seismic line density. Encounter rates were significantly higher in landscapes with high seismic line density and were most pronounced at low prey densities. This suggests that prey at low population densities are at higher risk in environments with a high seismic line density unless they learn to avoid them

    Spin Bose-Metal phase in a spin-1/2 model with ring exchange on a two-leg triangular strip

    Recent experiments on triangular lattice organic Mott insulators have found evidence for a 2D spin liquid in proximity to the metal-insulator transition. A Gutzwiller wavefunction study of the triangular lattice Heisenberg model with appropriate four-spin ring exchanges has found that the projected spinon Fermi sea state has a low variational energy. This wavefunction, together with a slave particle gauge theory, suggests that such spin liquid possesses spin correlations that are singular along surfaces in momentum space ("Bose surfaces"). Signatures of this state, which we refer to as a "Spin Bose-Metal" (SBM), are expected to be manifest in quasi-1D ladder systems: The discrete transverse momenta cut through the 2D Bose surface leading to a distinct pattern of 1D gapless modes. Here we search for a quasi-1D descendant of the triangular lattice SBM state by exploring the Heisenberg plus ring model on a two-leg strip (zigzag chain). Using DMRG, variational wavefunctions, and a Bosonization analysis, we map out the full phase diagram. Without ring exchange the model is equivalent to the J_1 - J_2 Heisenberg chain, and we find the expected Bethe-chain and dimerized phases. Remarkably, moderate ring exchange reveals a new gapless phase over a large swath of the phase diagram. Spin and dimer correlations possess particular singular wavevectors and allow us to identify this phase as the hoped for quasi-1D descendant SBM state. We derive a low energy theory and find three gapless modes and one Luttinger parameter controlling all power laws. Potential instabilities out of the zigzag SBM give rise to other interesting phases such as a period-3 VBS or a period-4 Chirality order, which we discover in the DMRG; we also find an interesting SBM state with partial ferromagnetism.Comment: 30 pages, 23 figure

    Structural validation of oral mucosal tissue using optical coherence tomography

    Background: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive optical technology using near-infrared light to produce cross-sectional tissue images with lateral resolution. Objectives: The overall aims of this study was to generate a bank of normative and pathological OCT data of the oral tissues to allow identification of cellular structures of normal and pathological processes with the aim to create a diagnostic algorithm which can be used in the early detection of oral disorders. Material and methods: Seventy-three patients with 78 suspicious oral lesions were referred for further management to the UCLH Head and Neck Centre, London. The entire cohort had their lesions surgically biopsied (incisional or excisional). The immediate ex vivo phase involved scanning the specimens using optical coherence tomography. The specimens were then processed by a histopathologist. Five tissue structures were evaluated as part of this study, including: keratin cell layer, epithelial layer, basement membrane, lamina propria and other microanatomical structures. Two independent assessors (clinician and pathologist trained to use OCT) assessed the OCT images and were asked to comment on the cellular structures and changes involving the five tissue structures in non-blind fashion. Results: Correct identification of the keratin cell layer and its structural changes was achieved in 87% of the cohort; for the epithelial layer it reached 93.5%, and 94% for the basement membrane. Microanatomical structures identification was 64% for blood vessels, 58% for salivary gland ducts and 89% for rete pegs. The agreement was “good” between the clinician and the pathologist. OCT was able to differential normal from pathological tissue and pathological tissue of different entities in this immediate ex vivo study. Unfortunately, OCT provided inadequate cellular and subcellular information to enable the grading of oral premalignant disorders. Conclusion: This study enabled the creation of OCT bank of normal and pathological oral tissues. The pathological changes identified using OCT enabled differentiation between normal and pathological tissues, and identification of different tissue pathologies. Further studies are required to assess the accuracy of OCT in identification of various pathological processes involving the oral tissues

    Temperature Dependence of the Magnetic Susceptibility for Triangular-Lattice Antiferromagnets with spatially anisotropic exchange constants

    We present the temperature dependence of the uniform susceptibility of spin-half quantum antiferromagnets on spatially anisotropic triangular-lattices, using high temperature series expansions. We consider a model with two exchange constants, J1J_1 and J2J_2 on a lattice that interpolates between the limits of a square-lattice (J1=0J_1=0), a triangular-lattice (J2=J1J_2=J_1), and decoupled linear chains (J2=0J_2=0). In all cases, the susceptibility which has a Curie-Weiss behavior at high temperatures, rolls over and begins to decrease below a peak temperature, TpT_p. Scaling the exchange constants to get the same peak temperature, shows that the susceptibilities for the square-lattice and linear chain limits have similar magnitudes near the peak. Maximum deviation arises near the triangular-lattice limit, where frustration leads to much smaller susceptibility and with a flatter temperature dependence. We compare our results to the inorganic materials Cs2_2CuCl4_4 and Cs2_2CuBr4_4 and to a number of organic molecular crystals. We find that the former (Cs2_2CuCl4_4 and Cs2_2CuBr4_4) are weakly frustrated and their exchange parameters determined through the temperature dependence of the susceptibility are in agreement with neutron-scattering measurements.
