    Spatiotemporal Calibration of Atmospheric Nitrogen Dioxide Concentration Estimates From an Air Quality Model for Connecticut

    A spatiotemporal calibration and resolution refinement model was fitted to calibrate nitrogen dioxide (NO2_2) concentration estimates from the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model, using two sources of observed data on NO2_2 that differed in their spatial and temporal resolutions. To refine the spatial resolution of the CMAQ model estimates, we leveraged information using additional local covariates including total traffic volume within 2 km, population density, elevation, and land use characteristics. Predictions from this model greatly improved the bias in the CMAQ estimates, as observed by the much lower mean squared error (MSE) at the NO2_2 monitor sites. The final model was used to predict the daily concentration of ambient NO2_2 over the entire state of Connecticut on a grid with pixels of size 300 x 300 m. A comparison of the prediction map with a similar map for the CMAQ estimates showed marked improvement in the spatial resolution. The effect of local covariates was evident in the finer spatial resolution map, where the contribution of traffic on major highways to ambient NO2_2 concentration stands out.     “Time to Reflect”: Enhancing the self-efficacy of secondary school wellbeing personnel in recognising and responding to mental health needs of students

    “Time to Reflect” (TTR) is an innovative five-session professional development program for secondary school wellbeing personnel working with students between the ages of 12 and 18. TTR is jointly designed and delivered by an educational and a youth mental health specialist service. The program provides education on a range of mental health related topics and offers participants an opportunity to reflect on their current practices. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate whether the TTR program increases perceived competence and confidence of participants in recognising and responding to the mental health needs of students. The secondary aim was to assess changes in the use of reflection and its perceived benefits for professional practice. Participants completed a self-assessment questionnaire at three time points: prior to the first session, after the final session, and three months after completion of the program. One hundred and thirty-five school wellbeing personnel from a variety of state, independent, and Catholic secondary schools participated. Following completion of the program, participants reported significantly greater confidence and competence in helping students with mental health problems, with this level of change being maintained at the three-month post-training assessment. The majority of participants reported positive changes in their use of reflection, and consequent benefits to their professional practice. The findings from this study suggest that the TTR program promoted the self-efficacy of participants in responding to the mental health needs of students, and that regular reflective practice may be an effective and beneficial model for continued professional learning and development in schools

Describes the Appealing Features of the Vocational Supports for Latino and Non-Latino Transition Aged Youth and Youth Adults (TAYYA) Consumers Study, which focuses on addressing employment disparities of young adults with a serious mental health condition (SMHC) by examining their lived experiences with established vocational support programs. The study pays particular attention to Latino TAYYA as they are a group at high risk for negative outcomes including high unemployment and low educational attainment compared to their white counterparts. They are also less likely to seek specialty mental health services and are the fastest growing racial ethnic group in the United States. Originally published as: Research in the Works, Issue 3, 2011.     Detention of children and adolescents under mental health legislation: a scoping review of prevalence, risk factors, and legal frameworks

    Background: For individuals with severe mental illness, involuntary assessment and/or treatment (hereafter detention) can be a necessary intervention to support recovery and may even be lifesaving. Despite this, little is known about how often these interventions are used for children and adolescents. Methods: This global scoping review set out to: (1) map the current evidence around mental health detentions of children and adolescents (< 18 years); (2) identify the clinical, sociodemographic, and behavioural factors associated with detention; and (3) document the views of professionals and young people on the implementation of mental health legislation. Results: After searching databases of peer-reviewed literature and citation chaining, 42 articles from 15 jurisdictions were included. About one fifth of psychiatric admissions in national register data were detentions, however trends were only available for a few high-income Western countries. The circumstances justifying detention and the criteria authorising detention varied between studies, with a mix of clinical factors and observed behaviours reported as the reason(s) warranting/precipitating a detention. Particular groups were more likely to experience detention, such as children and adolescents from minority ethnic communities and those with a documented history of abuse. There was a notable absence of qualitative research exploring the views of professionals or children and adolescents on detention. Conclusion: Further research is needed to explore the impact of detention on those aged < 18 years, including national register-based studies and qualitative studies. This is particularly relevant in nations currently undergoing legislative reform

    In Defence of Modest Doxasticism About Delusions

    Here I reply to the main points raised by the commentators on the arguments put forward in my Delusions and Other Irrational Beliefs (OUP, 2009). My response is aimed at defending a modest doxastic account of clinical delusions, and is articulated in three sections. First, I consider the view that delusions are in-between perceptual and doxastic states, defended by Jacob Hohwy and Vivek Rajan, and the view that delusions are failed attempts at believing or not-quite-beliefs, proposed by Eric Schwitzgebel and Maura Tumulty. Then, I address the relationship between the doxastic account of delusions and the role, nature, and prospects of folk psychology, which is discussed by Dominic Murphy, Keith Frankish, and Maura Tumulty in their contributions. In the final remarks, I turn to the continuity thesis and suggest that, although there are important differences between clinical delusions and non-pathological beliefs, these differences cannot be characterised satisfactorily in epistemic terms. \u
