    Interdisciplinary climate: The case of the first 50 years of British observations in Australia

    This paper presents the case for improved interdisciplinarity in climate research in the context of assessing and discussing the caution required when utilizing some types of historical climate data. This is done by a case study examining the reliability of the instruments used for collecting weather data in Australia between 1788 and 1840, as well as the observers themselves, during the British settlement of New South Wales. This period is challenging because the instruments were not uniformly calibrated and were created, repaired, and used by a wide variety of people with skills that frequently remain undocumented. Continuing significant efforts to rescue such early instrumental records of climate are likely to be enhanced by more open, interdisciplinary research that encourages discussion of an apparent dichotomy of view about the quantitative value of early single-instrument data between historians of physics (including museum curators) and climate researchers. © 2012 American Meteorological Society

    Space-based geoengineering: challenges and requirements

    The prospect of engineering the Earth's climate (geoengineering) raises a multitude of issues associated with climatology, engineering on macroscopic scales, and indeed the ethics of such ventures. Depending on personal views, such large-scale engineering is either an obvious necessity for the deep future, or yet another example of human conceit. In this article a simple climate model will be used to estimate requirements for engineering the Earth's climate, principally using space-based geoengineering. Active cooling of the climate to mitigate anthropogenic climate change due to a doubling of the carbon dioxide concentration in the Earth's atmosphere is considered. This representative scenario will allow the scale of the engineering challenge to be determined. It will be argued that simple occulting discs at the interior Lagrange point may represent a less complex solution than concepts for highly engineered refracting discs proposed recently. While engineering on macroscopic scales can appear formidable, emerging capabilities may allow such ventures to be seriously considered in the long term. This article is not an exhaustive review of geoengineering, but aims to provide a foretaste of the future opportunities, challenges, and requirements for space-based geoengineering ventures

    Moving away from content towards to process in second year physics teaching

    Physics teaching is traditionally content focused at the expense of providing experience in the way in which physics is conducted both within research environments and professionally. In our approach we have tried to address this imbalance by providing a more flexible assessment process. We have used the so-called power test method where assessment is a single exam question formally administered at the end of the subject but provided to students at the very beginning. The duration of the subject then becomes a guided process where student develop their own answer to this question. This approach provides a means of implementing continuous assessment and feedback, gives students the freedom to develop an answer in a way that best suits them and emphasises the process by which physical understanding is developed

    Gammaherpesvirus modulation of mouse adenovirus type 1 pathogenesis

    AbstractImmune function is likely to be shaped by multiple infections over time. Infection with one pathogen can confer cross-protection against heterologous pathogens. We tested the hypothesis that latent murine gammaherpesvirus 68 (γHV68) infection modulates host inflammatory responses and susceptibility to mouse adenovirus type 1 (MAV-1). Mice were infected intranasally (i.n.) with γHV68. 21 days later, they were infected i.n. with MAV-1. We assessed cytokine and chemokine expression by quantitative reverse transcriptase real-time PCR, cellular inflammation by histology, and viral loads by quantitative real-time PCR. Previous γHV68 infection led to persistently upregulated IFN-γ in lungs and spleen and persistently upregulated CCL2 and CCL5 in the lungs. Previous γHV68 infection amplified MAV-1-induced CCL5 upregulation and cellular inflammation in the lungs. Previous γHV68 infection was associated with lower MAV-1 viral loads in the spleen but not the lung. There was no significant effect of previous γHV68 on IFN-γ expression or MAV-1 viral loads when the interval between infections was increased to 44 days. In summary, previous γHV68 infection modulated lung inflammatory responses and decreased susceptibility to a heterologous virus in an organ- and time-dependent manner

    Assessing simulations of daily temperature and precipitation variability with global climate models for present and enhanced greenhouse climates

    The enhanced greenhouse climates of five different global climate models are examined with reference to the ability of the models to characterize the frequency of extreme events on both a regional and global scale. Ten years of model output for both control and enhanced greenhouse conditions are utilized to derive return periods for extreme temperature and precipitation events and to characterize the variability of the model climate at both regional and global scales. Under enhanced greenhouse conditions, return periods for extreme precipitation events are shorter and there is a general increase in the intensity of precipitation and number of wet spells in most areas. There is a decrease in frequency of cold temperature extremes and an increase in hot extremes in many areas. The results show a reasonable level of agreement between the models in terms of global scale variability, but the difference between model simulations of precipitation on a regional scale suggests that model derived estimates of variability changes must be carefully justified

    What is the perceived nature of parental care and support for young people with cystic fibrosis as they enter adult health services?

    The majority of those diagnosed with cystic fibrosis (CF) now live to adulthood. In response to increased survival age, transition services have been developed to ensure smooth transfer from paediatric to adult specialist healthcare, although the majority of treatment and care continues to be delivered in the home. However, little is known about how young adults and staff conceptualise the nature of the parental role after young people have left paediatric care. The aim of this study is to explore the nature of parental support that is perceived to be available at this time. As part of a larger study of transitional care, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 50 young people with CF aged 13-24 years (32 with experience of transition and/or adult CF services) and 23 specialist healthcare professionals (14 working in adult care) across two CF centres in Southeast England. Interviews took place in young people's homes or within CF services, using a topic guide and were recorded, transcribed and analysed thematically. Four domains of perceived parental support were identified by the young people interviewed, with varying degrees of continuity into adult care: (1) Providing non-clinical practical and emotional support; (2) Acting as 'troubleshooters' in times of health-related crisis; (3) Working in partnership with offspring in ongoing disease management in the home and clinic; (4) Acting as 'protectors' of their children. Young people and service staff expressed tensions in managing parental involvement in post-paediatric consultations and the degree to which parents should be aware of their offspring's deteriorating health and social concerns. Parental anxiety and over-involvement was perceived by many young people and staff as unsupportive. We suggest that although health and social care providers are mindful of the tensions that arise for those leaving paediatric services, the place of parental support in adult care is currently contentious for these 'new' ageing populations. © 2009 Blackwell Publishing Ltd

    'A bed in the middle of nowhere': parents' meanings of place of death for adults with cystic fibrosis

    As populations age and chronic conditions become more prevalent, an individual's ability to choose the location of their end-of-life care and death is increasingly considered important in the provision of good healthcare, with home implied as the 'best' place of death through UK government policy and specialist and voluntary palliative care services. However, considering meanings of place of end-of-life care and death is complex for young adults with life-limiting conditions where the disease course is variable and uncertain, and aggressive and palliative treatments are administered both at home and in hospital often until death. Although 'place' is a pivotal element in healthcare practice, research and policy, there has been little attempt to understand the meaning and importance of place in understanding experiences of care at end of life. Through analysis of in-depth interviews and letters received from parents of 27 young adults in England, Scotland and Wales who died from cystic fibrosis from 1999 to 2002 aged 17-36 years, key factors that influence families' meanings of place at end of life are presented. Both home and hospital deaths are reported, with no deaths in hospices. Preferences for possible locations of death are generally limited early in the disease course by choice of aggressive treatment, particularly lung transplantation. Rate of health decline, organisation and delivery of services, and relationships with specialist and general healthcare staff strongly influence parents' experience of death at home or in hospital, although no physical location was regarded a 'better' place of death. Meanings of, and attachment to place are mediated for families through these factors, questioning the appropriateness of a 'home is best' policy for those dying from life-limiting conditions. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd.
