    An empirical study of multidimensional fidelity of COMPASS consultation

    Consultation is essential to the daily practice of school psychologists (National Association of School Psychologist, 2010). Successful consultation requires fidelity at both the consultant (implementation) and consultee (intervention) levels. We applied a multidimensional, multilevel conception of fidelity (Dunst, Trivette, & Raab, 2013) to a consultative intervention called the Collaborative Model for Promoting Competence and Success (COMPASS) for students with autism. The study provided 3 main findings. First, multidimensional, multilevel fidelity is a stable construct and increases over time with consultation support. Second, mediation analyses revealed that implementation-level fidelity components had distant, indirect effects on student Individualized Education Program (IEP) outcomes. Third, 3 fidelity components correlated with IEP outcomes: teacher coaching responsiveness at the implementation level, and teacher quality of delivery and student responsiveness at the intervention levels.     An Uncommon Presentation of Coxa Saltans: A Case Report

    Coxa saltans, or “snapping hip,” refers to various conditions that produce a palpable or audible snapping of the hip after movement. We present an uncommon case of coxa saltans in a patient with a snapping proximal hamstring tendon. Findings of dynamic ultrasound evaluation were used to confirm the source of snapping, characterized by a lateral subluxation of the conjoint tendon over the ischial tuberosity. Our patient was treated nonoperatively, and we observed mild improvement of her symptoms. Few cases of similar pathological findings have been described, with varying causes of tendon instability. The results of the current case may help physicians in diagnosing and treating this condition

    Simultaneous Avulsion Fractures of the Tibial Tuberosity of Both Knees in a 14-Year-Old Boy: A Case Report

    Fractures of the tibial tuberosity are uncommon injuries in adolescents, representing an estimated 0.4% to 2.7% of all pediatric fractures. Most of these injuries occur in young, active males commonly between the ages of 12 to 17 years. Sports, particularly those involving jumping or sudden starts and stops, are most often implicated. Injuries of the tibial tuberosity of both knees are especially rare, with little more than 30 cases reported in the past 60 years. We present a 14-year-old male football player with simultaneous avulsion fractures of the tibial tuberosity of both knees.     Transition from Contraction to Extension in the Northeastern Basin and Range: New Evidence from the Copper Mountains, Nevada

    New mapping, structural analysis, and 40Ar/39Ar dating reveal an unusually well‐constrained history of Late Eocene extension in the Copper Mountains of the northern Basin and Range province. In this area, the northeast‐trending Copper Creek normal fault juxtaposes a distinctive sequence of metacarbonate and granitoid rocks against a footwall of Upper Precambrian to Lower Cambrian quartzite and phyllite. Correlation of the hanging wall with footwall rocks to the northwest provides an approximate piercing point that requires 8–12 km displacement in an ESE direction. This displaced fault slice is itself bounded above by another normal fault (the Meadow Fork Fault), which brings down a hanging wall of dacitic to rhyolitic tuff that grades conformably upward into conglomerate. These relationships record the formation of a fault‐bounded basin between 41.3 and 37.4 Ma. The results are consistent with a regional pattern in which volcanism and extension swept southward from British Columbia to southern Nevada from Early Eocene to Late Oligocene time. Because the southward sweep of volcanism is thought to track the steepening and foundering of the downgoing oceanic plate, these results suggest that the crucial mechanisms for the onset of regional extension were probably changes in plate boundary conditions coupled with convective removal of mantle lithosphere and associated regional magmatism and lithospheric weakening. Paleobotanical data indicate that surface elevations in northeastern Nevada were not significantly different than at present, suggesting that gravitational instability of overthickened continental crust was not the dominant force driving the onset of crustal thinning in mid‐Tertiary time

    Congregations as Social Service Providers: Services, Capacity, Culture, and Organizational Behavior

    Social welfare is traditionally discussed as a mixture of public, private, communal, and familial enterprise. Indeed, most textbooks and programs focus on the changing balance between these four circles of care. In the United States, a fifth and recently prominent circle of care exists and plays a major role, namely congregation-based social service provision. In this article, we first explain why faith-based care is so paramount in the United States, including a short discussion about the political developments in faith-based efforts. We then show the scope of congregational involvement in social service provision based on a large study of congregations. The rest of the article is dedicated to key administrative challenges regarding this mode of social service provision with a focus on their capacity, cultural characteristics, and organizational behavior. The latter topic is divided between start-up of new projects by congregations and issues related to running social programs in congregational settings. We conclude with a summary and discussion about the place of congregations as social service providers in the American welfare arena

    Too Stressed to Teach? Teaching Quality, Student Engagement and IEP Outcomes

    Teacher stress and burnout have a detrimental effect on the stability of the teaching workforce. However, the possible consequences of teacher burnout on teaching quality and on student learning outcomes are less clear, especially in special education settings. We applied Maslach and Leiter’s (1999) model to understand the direct effects of burnout on teaching in general and stress arising from interaction with a specific student on the individualized education program (IEP) outcomes of young children with autism spectrum disorder. We also examined indirect effects through teaching quality and student engagement. The results indicated that one of the three components of burnout—teacher personal accomplishment—was directly related to IEP outcomes, a distal effect, whereas stress was directly related to teaching quality and student engagement, which were more proximal effects. In addition, teacher stress, emotional exhaustion, and depersonalization had indirect effects on IEP outcomes through teaching quality and student engagement

    Hash-based signatures for the internet of things

    While numerous digital signature schemes exist in the literature, most real-world system rely on RSA-based signature schemes or on the digital signature algorithm (DSA), including its elliptic curve cryptography variant ECDSA. In this position paper we review a family of alternative signature schemes, based on hash functions, and we make the case for their application in Internet of Things (IoT) settings. Hash-based signatures provide postquantum security, and only make minimal security assumptions, in general requiring only a secure cryptographic hash function. This makes them extremely flexible, as they can be implemented on top of any hash function that satisfies basic security properties. Hash-based signatures also feature numerous parameters defining aspects such as signing speed and key size, that enable trade-offs in constrained environments. Simplicity of implementation and customization make hash based signatures an attractive candidate for the IoT ecosystem, which is composed of a number of diverse, constrained devices
