Memory and Monuments at the Hill of Tara
This paper focuses on the prehistoric monuments located at the âroyalâ site of Tara in Meath, Ireland, and their significance throughout Irish prehistory. Many of the monuments built during later prehistory respect and avoid earlier constructions, suggesting a cultural memory of the site that lasted from the Neolithic into the Early Medieval period. Understanding the chronology of the various monuments is necessary for deciphering the palimpsest that makes up the landscape of Tara. Based on the reuse, placement and types of monuments at the Hill of Tara, it may be possible to speculate on the motivations and intentions of the prehistoric peoples who lived in the area
Animal Models of Zika Virus Sexual Transmission
ZIKV was first identified in the 1940s as a mosquito-borne virus; however, sexual transmission, which is uncommon for arboviruses, was demonstrated more than 60 years later. Tissue culture and animal models have allowed scientists to study how this transmission is possible. Immunocompromised mice infected with ZIKV had high viral loads in their testes, and infection of immunocompetent female mice was achieved following intravaginal inoculation or inoculation via mating with an infected male. These mouse studies lead researchers to investigate the individual components of the male reproductive system. In cell culture and mouse models, ZIKV can persist in Sertoli and germ cells of the testes and epithelial cells in the epididymis, which may lead to sexual transmission even after ZIKV has been cleared from other tissues. ZIKV has also been studied in nonhuman primates (NHPs), which appears to mimic the limited human epidemiological data, with low rates of symptomatic individuals and similar clinical signs. Although refinement is needed, these animal models have proven to be key in ZIKV research and continue to help uncovering the mechanisms of sexual transmission. Spatio-temporal patterns of beaked whale echolocation signals in the North Pacific.
At least ten species of beaked whales inhabit the North Pacific, but little is known about their abundance, ecology, and behavior, as they are elusive and difficult to distinguish visually at sea. Six of these species produce known species-specific frequency modulated (FM) echolocation pulses: Baird's, Blainville's, Cuvier's, Deraniyagala's, Longman's, and Stejneger's beaked whales. Additionally, one described FM pulse (BWC) from Cross Seamount, Hawai'i, and three unknown FM pulse types (BW40, BW43, BW70) have been identified from almost 11 cumulative years of autonomous recordings at 24 sites throughout the North Pacific. Most sites had a dominant FM pulse type with other types being either absent or limited. There was not a strong seasonal influence on the occurrence of these signals at any site, but longer time series may reveal smaller, consistent fluctuations. Only the species producing BWC signals, detected throughout the Pacific Islands region, consistently showed a diel cycle with nocturnal foraging. By comparing stranding and sighting information with acoustic findings, we hypothesize that BWC signals are produced by ginkgo-toothed beaked whales. BW43 signal encounters were restricted to Southern California and may be produced by Perrin's beaked whale, known only from Californian waters. BW70 signals were detected in the southern Gulf of California, which is prime habitat for Pygmy beaked whales. Hubb's beaked whale may have produced the BW40 signals encountered off central and southern California; however, these signals were also recorded off Pearl and Hermes Reef and Wake Atoll, which are well south of their known range

Transposon-Mediated Horizontal Transfer of the Host-Specific Virulence Protein ToxA between Three Fungal Wheat Pathogens
Most known examples of horizontal gene transfer (HGT) between eukaryotes are ancient. These events are identified primarily using phylogenetic methods on coding regions alone. Only rarely are there examples of HGT where noncoding DNA is also reported. The gene encoding the wheat virulence protein ToxA and the surrounding 14âkb is one of these rare examples. ToxA has been horizontally transferred between three fungal wheat pathogens (Parastagonospora nodorum, Pyrenophora tritici-repentis, and Bipolaris sorokiniana) as part of a conserved âŒ14 kb element which contains coding and noncoding regions. Here we used long-read sequencing to define the extent of HGT between these three fungal species. Construction of near-chromosomal-level assemblies enabled identification of terminal inverted repeats on either end of the 14 kb region, typical of a type II DNA transposon. This is the first description of ToxA with complete transposon features, which we call ToxhAT. In all three species, ToxhAT resides in a large (140-to-250 kb) transposon-rich genomic island which is absent in isolates that do not carry the gene (annotated here as toxaâ). We demonstrate that the horizontal transfer of ToxhAT between P. tritici-repentis and P. nodorum occurred as part of a large (âŒ80 kb) HGT which is now undergoing extensive decay. In B. sorokiniana, in contrast, ToxhAT and its resident genomic island are mobile within the genome. Together, these data provide insight into the noncoding regions that facilitate HGT between eukaryotes and into the genomic processes which mask the extent of HGT between these species.M.C.M. acknowledges The Sun Foundationâs Peer Prize for Women in Science for

Detection of Ly\beta auto-correlations and Ly\alpha-Ly\beta cross-correlations in BOSS Data Release 9
The Lyman- forest refers to a region in the spectra of distant quasars
that lies between the rest-frame Lyman- and Lyman- emissions.
The forest in this region is dominated by a combination of absorption due to
resonant Ly and Ly scattering. When considering the 1D Ly
forest in addition to the 1D Ly forest, the full statistical
description of the data requires four 1D power spectra: Ly and
Ly auto-power spectra and the Ly-Ly real and imaginary
cross-power spectra. We describe how these can be measured using an optimal
quadratic estimator that naturally disentangles Ly and Ly
contributions. Using a sample of approximately 60,000 quasar sight-lines from
the BOSS Data Release 9, we make the measurement of the one-dimensional power
spectrum of fluctuations due to the Ly resonant scattering. While we
have not corrected our measurements for resolution damping of the power and
other systematic effects carefully enough to use them for cosmological
constraints, we can robustly conclude the following: i) Ly power
spectrum and Ly-Ly cross spectra are detected with high
statistical significance; ii) the cross-correlation coefficient is
on large scales; iii) the Ly measurements are contaminated by the
associated OVI absorption, which is analogous to the SiIII contamination of the
Ly forest. Measurements of the Ly forest will allow extension of
the usable path-length for the Ly measurements while allowing a better
understanding of the physics of intergalactic medium and thus more robust

Complete genome sequence of Syntrophobacter fumaroxidans strain (MPOB(T)).
Syntrophobacter fumaroxidans strain MPOB(T) is the best-studied species of the genus Syntrophobacter. The species is of interest because of its anaerobic syntrophic lifestyle, its involvement in the conversion of propionate to acetate, H2 and CO2 during the overall degradation of organic matter, and its release of products that serve as substrates for other microorganisms. The strain is able to ferment fumarate in pure culture to CO2 and succinate, and is also able to grow as a sulfate reducer with propionate as an electron donor. This is the first complete genome sequence of a member of the genus Syntrophobacter and a member genus in the family Syntrophobacteraceae. Here we describe the features of this organism, together with the complete genome sequence and annotation. The 4,990,251 bp long genome with its 4,098 protein-coding and 81 RNA genes is a part of the Microbial Genome Program (MGP) and the Genomes to Life (GTL) Program project
