Canker disease in Corymbia calophylla (Marri) in the south west of Western Australia
Cankering of marri in the southern forests of Western Australia is causing concern as it is increasing considerably in severity and geographic range. The contribution of canker fungi to stem, branch and tree death has not been studied in detail, and the causal agent(s) is yet to be determined (1). This project examined disease incidence and associated pathogens
Re-examination of the infra-red properties of randomly stirred hydrodynamics
Dynamic renormalization group (RG) methods were originally used by Forster,
Nelson and Stephen (FNS) to study the large-scale behaviour of
randomly-stirred, incompressible fluids governed by the Navier-Stokes
equations. Similar calculations using a variety of methods have been performed
since, but have led to a discrepancy in results. In this paper, we carefully
re-examine in -dimensions the approaches used to calculate the renormalized
viscosity increment and, by including an additional constraint which is
neglected in many procedures, conclude that the original result of FNS is
correct. By explicitly using step functions to control the domain of
integration, we calculate a non-zero correction caused by boundary terms which
cannot be ignored. We then go on to analyze how the noise renormalization,
absent in many approaches, contributes an correction to the
force autocorrelation and show conditions for this to be taken as a
renormalization of the noise coefficient. Following this, we discuss the
applicability of this RG procedure to the calculation of the inertial range
properties of fluid turbulence.Comment: 16 pages, 6 figure
Foreshore vegetation in the Peel-Harvey Estuary: changes since the opening of the Dawesville Channel : a report prepared for the Water and Rivers Commission
The Dawesville channel was constructed in April 1994, as part of a management plan to control eutrophication. With increased exchange between the nutrient-rich waters of the estuary and the nutrient-poor waters of the Indian Ocean there was considerable speculation as to the effects of altered water exchange on inundation, salinity, sedimentation and erosion. The work described here examined a number of estuarine characteristics in relation to meteorological factors and geomorphology at ten foreshore sites between April 2001 and March 2002. Comparisons were made between pre and post channel estuary conditions, and vegetation zonation examined
Texture, twinning and metastable "tetragonal" phase in ultrathin films of HfO2 on a Si substrate
Thin HfO2 films grown on the lightly oxidised surface of (100) Si wafers have been examined using dark-field transmission electron microscopy and selected area electron diffraction in plan view. The polycrystalline film has a grain size of the order of 100 nm and many of the grains show evidence of twinning on (110) and (001) planes. Diffraction studies showed that the film had a strong [110] out-of-plane texture, and that a tiny volume fraction of a metastable (possibly tetragonal) phase was retained. The reasons for the texture, twinning and the retention of the metastable phase are discussed
Optical control of internal electric fields in band-gap graded InGaN nanowires
InGaN nanowires are suitable building blocks for many future optoelectronic
devices. We show that a linear grading of the indium content along the nanowire
axis from GaN to InN introduces an internal electric field evoking a
photocurrent. Consistent with quantitative band structure simulations we
observe a sign change in the measured photocurrent as a function of photon
flux. This negative differential photocurrent opens the path to a new type of
nanowire-based photodetector. We demonstrate that the photocurrent response of
the nanowires is as fast as 1.5 ps
The 1000 GeV gamma rays from ms pulsars
The detection of 1000 GeV gamma-rays with the characteristic 6.1 ms periodicity of the radio pulsar PSR 1953 +29 is reported. This result, significant at the 5.4 beta level, provides the first direct evidence for the association of the 6 ms radio pulsar PSR1953+29 with the gamma-ray source 2CG065+0. Extensive observations of the 1.5 ms pulsar PSR 1937 are also reported
1000 GeV gamma rays from Cygnus X-3: An update
Measurements of 1000 GeV gamma-rays from Cygnus X-3 made with the University of Durham facility at Dugway, Utah in 1981/82 are reviewed. The light curve of the 4.8 hour modulated emission is updated and shows evidence significant at the 4.4 sigma level for strong emission (9% of the cosmic ray rate) at phase 0.625 and less significant (1.4 sigma level) indications of weaker emission (3% of the cosmic ray rate) at phase 0.125. The effect constituting the excess on the few nights showing the strongest emission appears to arise from the smallest Cerenkov light signals suggesting a steep gamma-ray spectrum. The 1982 data have been searched unsuccessfully for evidence of emission at phase 0.2, in coincidence with the results from the ultra-high energy (extensive Air Showers (EAS) measurements in 1979-1982. A systematic investigation of a long term variation in the strength of the peak of the 4.8 hr modulated 1000 GeV gamma-ray emission has been made. We find that in addition to the approximately 34 d variation reported by us previously, a stronger effect exists at around 19d
The 1000 GeV gamma ray emission from radio pulsars
Radio pulsars have concentrated on long observations of the Crab pulsar and showed that it emits short intense bursts and a persistent weak periodic flux at gamma-ray energies 1000 GeV. It was shown that the light curve of the persistent emission was dominated by a single peak, coincident with the position of the radio and low energy gamma-ray main pulse. The results of a more detailed analysis of the structure of this main pulse are reported following an appraisal of the timing system. It is shown that at energies 1000 GeV the duration of the main pulse is not greater than 0.4 ms, which is less than that seen at all frequencies other than radio. Flux limits for the emission of 1000 GeV gamma-rays by seven other radio pulsars are reporte
