    Visualizing the Law: Methods for Mapping the Legal Landscape and Drawing Analogies

    Visualization of information is currently touted in many major disciplines as the best way to manage large amounts of data and make information intuitively accessible. The law suffers from the same information complexity as other disciplines, but has heretofore failed to investigate the possibilities of approaching the law visually. This Comment employs the metaphor of legal map-making as a way to introduce the concept of visualizing the law. It presents two methods for making legal maps. The first is based on visualizing the law\u27s organizing metaphors, using examples of Evidence as a Bridge and Negligence as an Eight-Armed Balancing Scale. The second provides a template approach to case synthesis, illustrated by an analysis of the copyright case Sony Corporation ofAmerica v. Universal City Studios, Inc. Each example is a map of the law, in that it provides visual guidance for understanding legal concepts. The methods and examples presented are intended to provide a starting place for legal thinkers to investigate the possibilities of visualizing the law as a way to increase clarity and efficiency when analyzing and communicating legal issues

    The contribution of Teacher education to universities:a case study for international teacher educators

    This paper reports on the initial stage of a research project which aims to develop deeper understanding of the contribution teacher education, as a sub-discipline within Education, makes to Higher Education in England. The study is located in the intersection between the domains of teacher education and higher education scholarship, which in England represents a contested and ambiguous professional space. Tensions between competing accountability measures, pulling away from university-based to exclusively school-based teacher education, are exacerbated by proposed policy changes arising from the government's recent market review. Findings drawn from analysis of qualitative data from a national survey are discussed in the context of Elizabeth Povinelli's critique of late liberalism and previous scholarship on the nature of teacher educators’ work. Evidence from the study demonstrates numerous benefits to higher education of hosting teacher education departments, including contributions to standard metrics, regional development and knowledge exchange within a strategic social justice agenda. However, teacher educators themselves may find articulating these benefits difficult, because of marginalisation from the dominant ways of achieving and accounting for excellence in the modern university. These findings offer a cautionary tale to international colleagues whose governments may be embarking on equivalent paths of teacher education reform.<br/

    Quantification of Linalool in 3D Printed Fast-Dissolving Oral Films by A High-Pressure Liquid Chromatography Method

    Introduction: Linalool has shown inhibitory effects against Candida albicans. Microbial resistance is developing towards the current antifungal drugs. Therefore, an oral formulation of linalool oil may be used to effectively treat oral thrush. A wide range of patients can use fast-dissolving oral films (FDFs). Three-dimensional printing (3DP) may be utilised for the manufacture of FDFs. Aims: to formulate linalool in FDFs and quantify it using high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). Methods: A powder formulation containing linalool (5%w/w) was prepared and filaments were produced at 75°C and printed at 185°C. The films were dissolved either in methanol or deionised water, and linalool was quantified in the aqueous solutions. The mobile phase of a previously reported HPLC method was modified to quantify linalool in the aqueous solutions. The HPLC method was validated by measuring linalool in standard methanol and aqueous solutions. Results: Preparing aqueous solutions of filaments and films provided less variability in the analyses. 3D-printed FDFs had an average weight of 78.44 ± 6.84 mg. Applying the HPLC method revealed that the amounts of linalool changed from a theoretical 25 mg (per 0.5 g of filament) to the range of 23.98 ± 1.22 to 33.79 ± 2.43 mg. In contrast, the amounts of linalool were changed in films from theoretical 25 mg (per 0.5 g of film) to 13.82 ± 3.24 mg to 21.04 ± 0.92 mg. These observations indicated the evaporation of linalool considerably during printing at 185 °C. Conclusion: This work found that linalool FDFs should be printed at temperatures lower than 185 °C and dissolved in deionised water for better HPLC analytical consistency

    Taking forward a 'One Health' approach for turning the tide against the Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus and other zoonotic pathogens with epidemic potential

    The appearance of novel pathogens of humans with epidemic potential and high mortality rates have threatened global health security for centuries. Over the past few decades new zoonotic infectious diseases of humans caused by pathogens arising from animal reservoirs have included West Nile virus, Yellow fever virus, Ebola virus, Nipah virus, Lassa Fever virus, Hanta virus, Dengue fever virus, Rift Valley fever virus, Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus, highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses, Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus, and Zika virus. The recent Ebola Virus Disease epidemic in West Africa and the ongoing Zika Virus outbreak in South America highlight the urgent need for local, regional and international public health systems to be be more coordinated and better prepared. The One Health concept focuses on the relationship and interconnectedness between Humans, Animals and the Environment, and recognizes that the health and wellbeing of humans is intimately connected to the health of animals and their environment (and vice versa). Critical to the establishment of a One Health platform is the creation of a multidisciplinary team with a range of expertise including public health officers, physicians, veterinarians, animal husbandry specialists, agriculturalists, ecologists, vector biologists, viral phylogeneticists, and researchers to co-operate, collaborate to learn more about zoonotic spread between animals, humans and the environment and to monitor, respond to and prevent major outbreaks. We discuss the unique opportunities for Middle Eastern and African stakeholders to take leadership in building equitable and effective partnerships with all stakeholders involved in human and health systems to take forward a 'One Health' approach to control such zoonotic pathogens with epidemic potential

    Rapid spread of Zika virus in the Americas: implications for public health preparedness for mass gatherings at the 2016 Brazil Olympic Games

    Mass gatherings at major international sporting events put millions of international travelers and local host-country residents at risk of acquiring infectious diseases, including locally endemic infectious diseases. The mosquito-borne Zika virus (ZIKV) has recently aroused global attention due to its rapid spread since its first detection in May 2015 in Brazil to 22 other countries and other territories in the Americas. The ZIKV outbreak in Brazil, has also been associated with a significant rise in the number of babies born with microcephaly and neurological disorders, and has been declared a 'Global Emergency' by the World Health Organization. This explosive spread of ZIKV in Brazil poses challenges for public health preparedness and surveillance for the Olympics and Paralympics which are due to be held in Rio De Janeiro in August, 2016. We review the epidemiology and clinical features of the current ZIKV outbreak in Brazil, highlight knowledge gaps, and review the public health implications of the current ZIKV outbreak in the Americas. We highlight the urgent need for a coordinated collaborative response for prevention and spread of infectious diseases with epidemic potential at mass gatherings events. (C) 2016 The Authors.
