    Music Theory in Central New York State Public Schools : An Investigation

    The growth of technological and vocational education in public schools threatens the rebuilding of music programs which were cut during the taxpayer revolt of the seventies. If the threatened music programs are unable to equip the students choosing music careers with the fundamental tools of the trade, they are destined to be deemed expendible. The current investigation sought to determine the current ability of the public schools to provide their students with an understanding of the structure and language of music. The study examined the comprehension of music theory by 119 high school seniors from eight school districts in six counties in central New York State who had lived in their public school district since fourth grade and had participated in the music program throughout high school. The districts supplied data on enrollment, budget, staffing and other information relevant to their music programs; the students answered a questionnaire on their music experiences both in and out of school. The investigation found generally that the students pursuing music careers had studied privately, had had piano instruction, and had a functional music theory education. However, the study also found that most of the students tested had only a minimal comprehension of key signatures, intervals, scales and chords, but scored somewhat better on enharmonics, note values, meter, and terminology. The study concludes that more research in the present condition of music education, other than performance, needs to be done. Schools need to have private voice, as well as instrumental lessons available to students and need to offer secondary courses in music theory, music history, and sightsinging, and, if at all feasible, piano instruction because these factors had the most impact on the students\u27 knowledge and ability to communicate the principles of music theory

    Design and analysis issues of integrated control systems for high-speed civil transports

    A study was conducted to identify, rank, and define development plans for the critical guidance and control design and analysis issues as related to economically viable and environmentally acceptable high-speed civil transport. The issues were identified in a multistep process. First, pertinent literature on supersonic cruise aircraft was reviewed, and experts were consulted to establish the fundamental characteristics and problems inherent to supersonic cruise aircraft. Next, the advanced technologies and strategies being pursued for the high-speed civil transport were considered to determine any additional unique control problems the transport may have. Finally, existing technologies and methods were examined to determine their capabilities for the design and analysis of high-speed civil transport control systems and to identify the shortcomings and issues. Three priority levels - mandatory, highly beneficial, and desirable - were established. Within each of these levels, the issues were further ranked.     Modern cerebral blood flow (CBF) detection favors the use of either optical technologies that are limited to cortical brain regions, or expensive magnetic resonance. Decades ago, inhalation gas clearance was the choice method of quantifying CBF, but this suffered from poor temporal resolution. Electrolytic H2 clearance (EHC) generates and collects gas in situ at an electrode pair, which improves temporal resolution, but the probe size has prohibited meaningful subcortical use

    Fusion approach for remotely sensed mapping of agriculture (FARMA):A scalable open source method for land cover monitoring using data fusion

    The increasing availability of very-high resolution (VHR; &lt;2 m) imagery has the potential to enable agricultural monitoring at increased resolution and cadence, particularly when used in combination with widely available moderate-resolution imagery. However, scaling limitations exist at the regional level due to big data volumes and processing constraints. Here, we demonstrate the Fusion Approach for Remotely Sensed Mapping of Agriculture (FARMA), using a suite of open source software capable of efficiently characterizing time-series field-scale statistics across large geographical areas at VHR resolution. We provide distinct implementation examples in Vietnam and Senegal to demonstrate the approach using WorldView VHR optical, Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar, and Sentinel-2 and Sentinel-3 optical imagery. This distributed software is open source and entirely scalable, enabling large area mapping even with modest computing power. FARMA provides the ability to extract and monitor sub-hectare fields with multisensor raster signals, which previously could only be achieved at scale with large computational resources. Implementing FARMA could enhance predictive yield models by delineating boundaries and tracking productivity of smallholder fields, enabling more precise food security observations in low and lower-middle income countries.</p

    Clinically elevated depression scores do not produce negative attentional biases in caregivers of autistic children

    ObjectiveDepression scores in caregivers of autistic children often fall in the clinical range. The attention of clinically depressed individuals tends to be biased toward negatively toned information. Whether caring for an autistic child might also be characterized by a negative attentional bias was explored here.MethodsA sample of N = 98 (57 caregivers and 41 controls) completed questionnaires assessing depressive symptoms. Orienting attention to (i.e., vigilance), and shifting attention away from (i.e., disengagement), negative information was assessed via an online version of the emotional face dot probe task.ResultsMean depression scores in caregivers, falling in the borderline clinical range, were significantly higher compared with controls. Groups, however, were indistinguishable with respect to vigilance and disengagement, and these attentional indices were unrelated to depression scores.ConclusionCaring for an autistic child, while associated with borderline clinical depression scores, was not characterized by a negative attentional bias. Findings are discussed in the context of methodological shortcomings and recommendations for future research

    Electrochemical dopamine detection: Comparing gold and carbon fiber microelectrodes using background subtracted fast scan cyclic voltammetry

    Electrochemical detection is becoming increasingly important for the detection of biological species. Most current biological research with electrochemical detection is done with carbon fiber electrodes due to their many beneficial properties. The ability to build electrochemical sensor from noble metals instead of carbon fibers may be beneficial in developing inexpensive multiplexed electrochemical detection schemes. To advance understanding and to test the feasibility of using noble metal electrochemical sensors the detection of dopamine, a biologically important small molecule was studied here. Specifically, dopamine detection on gold microelectrodes was characterized and compared to P-55 carbon fiber microelectrodes of the same geometry, using background subtracted fast scan cyclic voltammetry. While not as sensitive to dopamine as carbon fibers, it was observed that gold microelectrodes have six times the saturation coverage per area and 40 times the linear working range. Selectivity to dopamine, in comparison to several other neurotransmitters and their derivatives, is also quantitatively described

    Measuring individual overpotentials in an operating solid-oxide electrochemical cell

    We use photo-electrons as a non-contact probe to measure local electrical potentials in a solid-oxide electrochemical cell. We characterize the cell in operando at near-ambient pressure using spatially-resolved X-ray photoemission spectroscopy. The overpotentials at the interfaces between the Ni and Pt electrodes and the yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) electrolyte are directly measured. The method is validated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Using the overpotentials, which characterize the cell's inefficiencies, we compare without ambiguity the electro-catalytic efficiencies of Ni and Pt, finding that on Ni H_2O splitting proceeds more rapidly than H2 oxidation, while on Pt, H2 oxidation proceeds more rapidly than H2O splitting.Comment: corrected; Phys.     Microfabricated FSCV-compatible microelectrode array for real-time monitoring of heterogeneous dopamine release

    Fast scan cyclic voltammetry (FSCV) has been used previously to detect neurotransmitter release and reuptake in vivo. An advantage that FSCV has over other electrochemical techniques is its ability to distinguish neurotransmitters of interest (i.e. monoamines) from their metabolites using their respective characteristic cyclic voltammogram. While much has been learned with this technique, it has generally only been used in a single working electrode arrangement. Additionally, traditional electrode fabrication techniques tend to be difficult and somewhat irreproducible. Described in this report is a fabrication method for a FSCV compatible microelectrode array (FSCV-MEA) that is capable of functioning in vivo. The microfabrication techniques employed here allow for better reproducibility than traditional fabrication methods of carbon fiber microelectrodes, and enable batch fabrication of electrode arrays. The reproducibility and electrochemical qualities of the probes were assessed along with cross talk in vitro. Heterogeneous release of electrically stimulated dopamine was observed in real-time in the striatum of an anesthetized rat using the FSCV-MEA. The heterogeneous effects of pharmacology on the striatum was also observed and shown to be consistent across multiple animals
