    We consider the scattering of sound by turbulence in a jet shear layer. The turbulent, time-varying inhomogeneities in the flow scatter tonal sound fields in such a way as to give spectral broadening, which decreases the level of the incident tone, but increases the broadband level around the frequency of the tone. The scattering process is modelled for observers outside the cone of silence of the jet, using high-frequency asymptotic methods and a weak-scattering assumption. An analytical model for the far-field power spectral density of the scattered field is derived, and the result is compared to experimental data.     The scattering of sound by turbulence in a jet shear layer is considered. Spectral broadening or 'haystacking' is the process whereby the turbulent, time-varying inhomogeneities in the flow scatter tonal sound fields, which decreasesthe level of the incident tone, but increases the broadband level around the frequency of the tone. The scattering process is modelled analytically, using high-frequency asymptotic methods and a weak-scattering assumption. Analytical models for the far-field spectral density of the scattered field are derived for two cases: (1) any polar angle including inside the cone of silence; (2) polar angles outside the cone of silence. At polar angles outside the cone of silence, the predictions from the two models are very similar, but using the second model it is considerably simpler to evaluate the far-field spectral density. Simulation results are compared to experimental data, albeit only at a polar angle of 90º. The model correctly predicts the behaviour of the scattered field as a function of jet velocity and tone frequency. Also simulations at other polar angles and a parametric study are presented. These simulations indicate how the 'haystacking' is predicted to vary as a function of the polar angle, and also as a function of the characteristic length, time and convection velocity scales of the turbulence contained in the jet shear layer

    Optimization of MLS receivers for multipath environments

    Optimal design studies of MLS angle-receivers and a theoretical design-study of MLS DME-receivers are reported. The angle-receiver results include an integration of the scan data processor and tracking filter components of the optimal receiver into a unified structure. An extensive simulation study comparing the performance of the optimal and threshold receivers in a wide variety of representative dynamical interference environments was made. The optimal receiver was generally superior. A simulation of the performance of the threshold and delay-and-compare receivers in various signal environments was performed. An analysis of combined errors due to lateral reflections from vertical structures with small differential path delays, specular ground reflections with neglible differential path delays, and thermal noise in the receivers is provided

Exercise during a healthy pregnancy is safe and has many maternal and fetal benefits. Identified benefits include management of weight gain, improvement in mood, and preparation for labor. Previous research has evaluated women’s beliefs and practices of exercise in pregnancy, but it has focused on affluent, ethnic majority populations.     Computer-aided liner optimization for broadband noise

    In this article the attenuation of broadband noise in an acoustically-lined circular-section duct is investigated. The aim is to predict how an axially segmented liner influences the attenuation of broadband noise in an aero-engine intake. The sound field is modelled using a multi-modal representation, assuming an ensemble of uncorrelated modes over a wide range of frequencies. An optimization procedure based on a Response Surface Model is used to investigate the optimum uniform and axially-segmented acoustic liner that maximizes the attenuation of broadband noise. An approximate calculation of the Perceived Noise level (PNL) is used for the objective function. In this article the benefit of using an axially segmented liner instead of a uniform liner to attenuate broadband noise is demonstrated

    Climate-Relevant Land Use and Land Cover Change Policies

    Both observational and modeling studies clearly demonstrate that land-use and land-cover change (LULCC) play an important biogeophysical and biogeochemical role in the climate system from the landscape to regional and even continental scales. Without comprehensively considering these impacts, an adequate response to the threats posed by human intervention into the climate system will not be adequate. Public policy plays an important role in shaping local- to national-scale land-use practices. An array of national policies has been developed to influence the nature and spatial extent of LULCC. Observational evidence suggests that these policies, in addition to international trade treaties and protocols, have direct effects on LULCC and thus the climate system. However, these policies, agreements, and protocols fail to adequately recognize these impacts. To make these more effective and thus to minimize climatic impacts, we propose several recommendations: 1) translating international treaties and protocols into national policies and actions to ensure positive climate outcomes; 2) updating international protocols to reflect advancement in climate–LULCC science; 3) continuing to invest in the measurements, databases, reporting, and verification activities associated with LULCC and LULCC-relevant climate monitoring; and 4) reshaping Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation+ (REDD+) to fully account for the multiscale biogeophysical and biogeochemical impacts of LULCC on the climate system

    First occurrence of the Northern Long-eared Bat, Myotis septentrionalis, on Prince Edward Island is reported. A mixed-species hibernaculum of M. septentrionalis and the Little Brown Bat, M. lucifugus, is also described from southeastern Prince Edward Island. This is the first record of bats over-wintering in the province and the first time either species has been reported making use of a building as a hibernaculum

    The Engineering Design Environment is evolving in many ways. Considerable amounts of data, information and knowledge are 'building up' within engineering companies and engineers are becoming involved in ever-more distributed collaboration activities to tackle complex multi-disciplinary challenges in the design of new products requiring the need to share knowledge. These changes are placing further challenges on Engineering Design Communication (EDC, a fundamental knowledge sharing activity) as the current methods of communication were never specifically designed to support such technical and highly-contextual communication. Much research has been performed on understanding EDC, thus enabling a list of requirements to support EDC to be generated. Therefore, this paper proposes a prescriptive tool, (PartBook) which instantiates these requirements and looks at the next steps being taken to evaluate the tool in meeting the requirements
