    Effects of the rearing season on carcass and meat quality of suckling Apennine light lambs

    The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of the rearing season (autumn vs winter) on the carcass and meat quality of light lambs, obtained according to the traditional farming system usual in central Italy. Eighty carcasses from 60 d±3 old unweaned Apennine single birth male lambs, permanently reared indoor, half in autumn (receiving milk from ewes permanently pastured) and half in winter (which dams did never acceded to pasture), were weighed, classified according to the EU classification system for light lambs, and their Longissimus lumborum meat was analysed for pH, colour, drip and cooking losses, proximate composition and fatty acids profile of intramuscular fat. Most of the carcasses fully responded to the 1st quality EU requirements and no effects of the rearing season was evident on carcass characteristics. On the contrary, L. lumborum of lambs born and reared in autumn, receiving milk from ewes permanently pastured, evidenced a lower Lightness L* (P=0.02), a higher Chroma C* (P=0.01), with a higher fat content (P=0.04) than lambs reared in winter, which dams were permanently stall-fed. Moreover the intramuscular fat of the former was characterized by a greater PUFA concentration (P=0.01), a more favourable n-6/n-3 ratio (Pb 0.001), and a higher CLA content (Pb0.001) than the latter, as a result of the difference related to the sheep traditional feeding system

    Measurements of Multi-Layer Insulation at High Boundary Temperature, using a Simple Non-Calorimetric Method

    In spite of abundant literature, the thermal performance of Multi-Layer Insulation (MLI) still deserves dedicated investigation for specific applications, as the achievable insulation strongly depends on installation details. Furthermore, less accurate information is available for warm than for cold boundaries, since errors due to edge effects in small test benches increase strongly with warm boundary temperature. We establish here the thermal performance of MLI between 300 K and 77 K or 4 K, without bringing calorimetric methods into play, through the accurate measurement of a temperature profile. A cylinder in thin copper, wrapped with MLI, is cooled at one extremity while suspended under vacuum inside a sheath at room temperature. For known thermal conductivity and thickness of the tube, the heat flux can be inferred from the temperature profile. In-situ measurement of the thermal conductivity is obtained by applying a know heat flow at the warm extremity of the cylinder. Results, cross-checked with a calibrated heatmeter, compare well with what previously obtained on a large-scale measuring facility

    Paediatric non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: impact on patients and mothers' quality of life

    Background: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the causes of fatty liver in adults and is currently the primary form of chronic liver disease in children and adolescents. However, the psychological outcome (i.e. the behavioural problems that can in turn be related to psychiatric conditions, like anxiety and mood disorders, or lower quality of life) in children and adolescents suffering of NAFLD has not been extensively explored in the literature. Objectives: The present study aims at evaluating the emotional and behavioural profile in children suffering from NAFLD and the quality of life in their mothers. Patients and Methods: A total of 57 children (18 females/39 males) with NAFLD were compared to 39 age-matched control children (25 females/14 males). All participants were submitted to the following psychological tools to assess behavior, mood, and anxiety: the Multidimensional Anxiety Scale for Children (MASC), the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), and the Children's Depression Inventory (CDI). Moreover, the mothers of 40 NAFLD and 39 control children completed the World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF (WHOQOL-BREF) questionnaire. Results: NAFLD children scored significantly higher as compared to control children in MASC (P = 0.001) and CDI total (P < 0.001) scales. The CBCL also revealed significantly higher scores for NAFLD children in total problems (P = 0.046), internalizing symptoms (P = 0.000) and somatic complaints (P < 0.001). The WHOQOL-BREF revealed significantly lower scores for the mothers of NAFLD children in the overall perception of the quality of life (P < 0.001), and in the "relationships" domain (P = 0.023). Conclusions: Increased emotional and behavioural problems were detected in children with NAFLD as compared to healthy control children, together with an overall decrease in their mothers' quality of life. These results support the idea that these patients may benefit from a psychological intervention, ideally involving both children and parents, whose quality of life is likely negatively affected by this disease

    Nuclear loads and nuclear shielding performance of EU DEMO divertor: A comparative neutronics evaluation of two interim design options

    In a demonstrational fusion power plant (DEMO), divertor is supposed to protect vacuum vessel and superconducting magnets against neutron flux in the bottom region of the vessel. The vessel is subject to a strict design limit in irradiation damage dose and the magnets in nuclear heating power, respectively. Thus, the DEMO divertor must have the capability to protect sufficiently the vessel and the magnets against neutron flux being substantially stronger than in ITER.In this paper, a first systematic neutronics study for the European DEMO divertor is reported. Results of the extensive assessment of key nuclear loading features (nuclear heating, irradiation damage & helium production) are presented for two optional concepts, namely, dome and shielding liner including minor geometrical variants. The shielding performance of the two competing design options is discussed together with the case of a bare cassette (no shielding), particularly in terms of damage dose compared with the design limits specified for the European DEMO.It was found that both the dome and shielding liner were able to significantly reduce the nuclear loads in the cassette body and the vessel. The maximum damage dose at the end of the lifetime remained subcritical for the cassette body for both cases whereas it exceeded the limit for the vessel under the dome, but only locally on the surface underneath the pumping duct. But, the damage could be reduced below the limit for the vessel by increasing the size of the dome or by deploying the shielding liner. The most critical feature was the excessive damage occurring in the own body of the shielding components where the maximum damage dose in the steel heat sink of the dome and the shielding liner far exceeded the design limit at the end of the lifetime

    Effects of loading methods on rabbit welfare and meat quality

    The effects of different loading methods on the welfare, carcass characteristics and meat quality traits of hybrid commercial rabbits were investigated. 384 male rabbits, 82 days old, were transported from the farm to the slaughterhouse. At the farm, 192 rabbits were loaded onto the truck smoothly (S) and 192 rabbits were loaded roughly (R). The S loading method consisted of carefully placing each rabbit into the transport crates. In the R method, the loading was hurriedly and carelessly executed by the transport operator, throwing each animal into the crates fixed on the truck. Live weight before and after transport as well as slaughter data were recorded for each rabbit, and a subset of 80 carcasses were evaluated for meat quality. Blood samples from 80 rabbits were analysed for haematological and biochemical parameters. A significant neutrophilia (P < 0.001), lymphocytopaenia (P < 0.001) and an increase in serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST) (P < 0.01), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) (P < 0.001) and creatine kinase (CK) activities (P < 0.001) were recorded in all rabbits after transport, independent of the loading method. A twofold increase in serum corticosterone concentration (6.23 vs. 14.88 ng/mL; P = 0.001) was observed in all rabbits following transport. Results suggest that the stress parameters analysed were more influenced by transport and handling itself rather than by the different loading methods. The results showed that there was no adverse effect of loading method on carcass traits. Furthermore, the stress condition evidenced by haematological and biochemical parameters prior to slaughter did not affect meat quality
