    A Three-Dimensional Model of Enlarging the Mnemonic Conflict: The Case of Poland Under Second Law and Justice Government

    The second Law and Justice (PiS) government, in power in Poland since 2015, reintroduced memory politics atop the policymaking agenda. However, within its strategy, mnemonic policymaking has reached beyond historical policies and commemorative initiatives. PiS represents a new, previously unseen, radical type of mnemonic actor - a memory excluder. It has used politics of the past not instead of politics of the present, but as its integral part - thus past, present, and future blur into one. Most of all, it has consciously enlarged the scope of collective memory dispute in Polish society, incorporating chronologically more distant events, policymaking dimensions previously never examined from the angle of memory, and more local and personalised instances of collective memory narratives. This paper aims to explain the mnemonic tactics of the second PiS government, proposing two novel concepts for the field. First, it defines the memory excluder as a new type of mnemonic actor, and later it explains its demeanours through a complex, three-dimensional model of enlarging the mnemonic conflict. This will be done using available evidence, examples, and ethnographic research on memory politics implemented in Poland in the years 2015-2017

    Transmission Power Measurements for Wireless Sensor Nodes and their Relationship to the Battery Level

    In this work we focus on the new generation EYESIFXv2 [1] wireless sensor nodes by carrying out experimental measurements on power related quantities. In particular, our aim is to characterize the relationship between the level of the battery and the transmission power radiated by the node. The present results point out the non linear and non trivial effects due to the output potentiometer which can be used to tune the transmission power. It shall be observed that a thorough study of how battery and/or potentiometer settings translate to actual transmitted power levels is crucial to e.g. design correct power control algorithms, which can effectively operate under any operational condition of the wireless sensor device

    Tritium transport in the vacuum vessel pressure suppression system for helium cooled pebble bed

    In the frame of the safety studies for the EU-DEMO reactor, attention is paid to the hydrogen concentration in the vacuum vessel and connected volumes since it would lead to a possible hazard of releasing tritium and activated dust. The risk of explosion cannot be excluded a priori if H2 stockpiles. For this reason, in both water (WCLL) and helium (HCPB) cooled breeding blanket concepts of EU-DEMO, the problem is under investigation with a cross-reference between the available technologies in fission (such as the Passive Autocatalytic Recombiners – PAR) and fusion application. In particular, the recent analyses pointed out the implementation of the PARs into the Vacuum Vessel Pressure Suppression System or linked systems. This paper evaluates the Hydrogen behavior (main mobilized tritium source term) for the Helium-Cooled Pebble Bed (HCPB) VVPSS concept. The analyses preliminary investigate the stratification of the hydrogen mass inventory inside the PSS. In particular, a MELCOR 1.8.6 model of the PSS, based on past activities aimed at dust transport and thermohydraulic analyses, is adopted. The paper also introduces the applicability of PAR technology in the operation range of fusion devices, analyzing the problem of the recombination rate due to the dilution of Hydrogen after a Helium blowdown

    Morphological Study of the Larval Spiracular System in Eight Lutzomyia Species (Diptera: Psychodidae)

    The morphology of the spiracles of fourth instar larva in eight sandfly species were examined by light and scanning electron microscopy. Species studied were: Lutzomyia longipalpis (Lutz & Neiva), L. ovallesi (Ortiz), L. youngi Feliciangeli & Murillo, L. evansi (Nuñez-Tovar), L. trinidadensis (Newstead), L. migonei (França), L. absonodonta Feliciangeli, and L. venezuelensis (Floch & Abonnenc). In larvae of all eight species both thoracic and abdominal spiracles are located at the top of a globular bulge. Their structure consists of a spiracular plate with a sclerotized central portion and a rose-like peripheral portion. The latter has circularly arranged papillae, separated from each other by elongated septa. Each papilla is longitudinally crossed by a fine cleft dividing it into two identical parts.     Grotta Romanelli, located on the Adriatic coast of southern Apulia (Italy), is considered a key site for the Mediterranean Pleistocene for its archaeological and palaeontological contents. The site, discovered in 1874, was re-evaluated only in 1900, when P. E. Stasi realised that it contained the first evidence of the Palaeolithic in Italy. Starting in 1914, G. A. Blanc led a pioneering excavation campaign, for the first-time using scientific methods applied to systematic palaeontological and stratigraphical studies. Blanc proposed a stratigraphic framework for the cave. Different dating methods (C-14 and U/Th) were used to temporally constrain the deposits. The extensive studies of the cave and its contents were mostly published in journals with limited distribution and access, until the end of the 1970s, when the site became forgotten. In 2015, with the permission of the authorities, a new excavation campaign began, led by a team from Sapienza University of Rome in collaboration with IGAG CNR and other research institutions. The research team had to deal with the consequences of more than 40 years of inactivity in the field and the combined effect of erosion and legal, as well as illegal, excavations. In this paper, we provide a database of all the information published during the first 70 years of excavations and highlight the outstanding problems and contradictions between the chronological and geomorphological evidence, the features of the faunal assemblages and the limestone artefacts

    First report on Copepoda and Ostracoda (Crustacea) from northern Apenninic springs (N. Italy): a faunal and biogeographical account

    The microcrustacean fauna of rheocrene and rheo-limnocrene springs in a protected area of the northern Apennines (Italy) was investigated for the first time. All springs are located in the catchments of the rivers Parma and Enza at altitudes between 800 and 1609 m a.s.l. Several of these springs are still in pristine condition while others are artificially modified or impacted to some degree. Surveys were carried out from April to June 2007. The sampling methods used for invertebrate fauna were: moss washing, artificial traps, and inserting drift tubes at the discharge point. A total of 14 harpacticoid, five cyclopoid, and 13 ostracod taxa were identified. Ostracods were mainly represented by crenophilic taxa; of particular interest was the collection of a specimen belonging to Pseudolimnocythere, a stygobiont genus with only two living species and a reduced distribution. Faunal affinities between northern Apenninic springs and those in other Italian mountain systems are discussed. The investigated ecosystems support a high microcrustacean diversity that must be adequately preserved due to the increasing direct and indirect impacts on mountain springs and groundwater resources

    CFD Code Validation against Stratified Air-Water Flow Experimental Data

    Pressurized thermal shock (PTS) modelling has been identified as one of the most important industrial needs related to nuclear reactor safety. A severe PTS scenario limiting the reactor pressure vessel (RPV) lifetime is the cold water emergency core cooling (ECC) injection into the cold leg during a loss of coolant accident (LOCA). Since it represents a big challenge for numerical simulations, this scenario was selected within the European Platform for Nuclear Reactor Simulations (NURESIM) Integrated Project as a reference two-phase problem for computational fluid dynamics (CFDs) code validation. This paper presents a CFD analysis of a stratified air-water flow experimental investigation performed at the Institut de MĂ©canique des Fluides de Toulouse in 1985, which shares some common physical features with the ECC injection in PWR cold leg. Numerical simulations have been carried out with two commercial codes (Fluent and Ansys CFX), and a research code (NEPTUNE CFD). The aim of this work, carried out at the University of Pisa within the NURESIM IP, is to validate the free surface flow model implemented in the codes against experimental data, and to perform code-to-code benchmarking. Obtained results suggest the relevance of three-dimensional effects and stress the importance of a suitable interface drag modelling

    Passive hydrogen recombination during a beyond design basis accident in a fusion DEMO plant

    One of the most important environmental and safety concerns in nuclear fusion plants is the confinement of radioactive substances into the reactor buildings during both normal operations and accidental conditions. For this reason, hydrogen build-up and subsequent ignition must be avoided, since the pressure and energy generated may threaten the integrity of the confinement structures, causing the dispersion of radioactive and toxic products toward the public environment. Potentially dangerous sources of hydrogen are related to the exothermal oxidation reactions between steam and plasma-facing components or hot dust, which could occur during accidents such as the in-vessel loss of coolant or a wet bypass. The research of technical solutions to avoid the risk of a hydrogen explosion in large fusion power plants is still in progress. In the safety and environment work package of the EUROfusion consortium, activities are ongoing to study solutions to mitigate the hydrogen explosion risk. The main objective is to preclude the occurrence of flammable gas mixtures. One identified solution could deal with the installation of passive autocatalytic recombiners into the atmosphere of the vacuum vessel pressure suppression system tanks. A model to control the PARs recombination capacity as a function of thermal-hydraulic parameters of suppression tanks has been modeled in MELCOR. This paper aims to test the theoretical effectiveness of the PAR intervention during an in-vessel loss of coolant accident without the intervention of the decay heat removal system for the Water-Cooled LithiumLead concept of EU-DEMO

    A Microbial Co-Culturing System for Producing Cellulose-Hyaluronic Acid Composites

    In this study, a co-culture system combining bacterial cellulose (BC) producers and hyaluronic acid (HA) producers was developed for four different combinations. AAB of the genus Komagataeibacter sp. and LAB of the Lactocaseibacillus genus were used to produce BC and HA, respectively. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction were used to investigate changes in BC-HA composites chemical and morphological structure. Water absorption, uptake, and antibacterial properties were also tested. Outcomes highlighted a higher bacterial cellulose yield and the incorporation of hyaluronic acid into the composite. The presence of hyaluronic acid increased fiber dimension-nearly doubled for some combinations-which led to a decreased crystallinity of the composites. Different results were observed based on the BC producer and HA producer combination. However, water holding capacity (WHC) in all the samples improved with the presence of HA, while water uptake worsened. A thymol-enriched BC-HA composite showed high antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli DSM 30083(T) and Staphylococcus aureus DSM 20231(T). Results could contribute to opening new applications in the cosmetics or pharmaceutical fields
