    INSECTS AND FUNGI ON THE RELICT ZELKOVA SICULA(ROSALES, ULMACEAE)IN SICILY (ITALY): NEW RECORDS AND KNOWN SPECIES IN A SHORT REVIEW

    The Authors report the results of a study conducted with the purpose of increasing the knowledge about theinsects and fungi living on Zelkova siculaDi Pasquale, Garfì & Quézel, 1992 (Rosales, Ulmaceae). The plant is a veryrare relict of the Tertiary period, belonging to a genus of trees extinct in continental Europe. Only two small populationsare known living in a restricted woodland in the province of Syracuse, Sicily. The results concern both the insectspicked up during surveys that were carried out in 2014 and 2015, and the species of fungi and insects already known onZelkova siculafrom literature. As a result of surveys, two species of Buprestidae, two species of Cerambycidae, andtwo of Lepidoptera have been recognized. From literature, seven species of phytophagous insects are reported onZelkova sicula, they belong to Hemiptera: Aphididae (1 sp.), Diaspididae (1 sp.), Coccidae (1 sp.); Coleoptera:Buprestidae (1 sp.), Cerambycidae (2 spp.); and Lepidoptera: Lasiocampidae (1 sp.). Five species of fungi are knownfrom literature and they belong to: Botryosphaeriales (3 spp.), Pleosporales (1 sp.), and Diaporthales (1 sp.)

    The results of a ten-years study on bumblebee species of Mount Etna in eastern Sicily are given. The observations were carried out in natural and anthropized ecosystems at different altitudes in the Mediterranean Basal plan (0-1450 m a.s.l.) and Mountain-Mediterranean plan (1450-2100 m a.s.l.). Twelve species belonging to Bombus (2 spp.), Melanobombus (1 sp.), Megabombus (2 spp.), Thoracobombus (3 spp.) and Psithyrus (4 spp.) subgenera are recorded. In the Mountain-Mediterranean plan, rich in endemic plants from Etna and Sicily, 11 species have been recorded on plants characterised by the highest honey potential like Astragalus, Rubus, and Senecio. The most abundant species in this level are B. lapidarius decipiens and B. lucorum lucorum. In the Mediterranean Basal plan 12 species have been recorded. Among them, Bombus terrestris terrestris is always present, and B. terrestris calabricus has been recorded only at 1900 m a.s.l.  Data are given on surveyed bumblebee species and subspecies, their presence in Italy, the spread in Sicily, and the plants on which the bees were observed. These data are placed in relation to the altitudinal levels and the ecological quality of the areas where the specimens were found

    An Approach for Securing Cloud-Based Wide Area Monitoring of Smart Grid Systems

    Computing power and flexibility provided by cloud technologies represent an opportunity for Smart Grid applications, in general, and for Wide Area Monitoring Systems, in particular. Even though the cloud model is considered efficient for Smart Grids, it has stringent constraints in terms of security and reliability. An attack to the integrity or confidentiality of data may have a devastating impact for the system itself and for the surrounding environment. The main security risk is represented by malicious insiders, i.e., malevolent employees having privileged access to the hosting machines. In this paper, we evaluate a powerful hardening approach that could be leveraged to protect synchrophasor data processed at cloud level. In particular, we propose the use of homomorphic encryption to address risks related to malicious insiders. Our goal is to estimate the feasibility of such a security solution by verifying the compliance with frame rate requirements typical of synchrophasor standards

    Plasma GFAP, NfL and pTau 181 detect preclinical stages of dementia

    BackgroundPlasma biomarkers are preferable to invasive and expensive diagnostic tools, such as neuroimaging and lumbar puncture that are gold standard in the clinical management of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). Here, we investigated plasma Glial Fibrillary Acidic Protein (GFAP), Neurofilament Light Chain (NfL) and Phosphorylated-tau-181 (pTau 181) in AD and in its early stages: Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) and Mild cognitive impairment (MCI).Material and methodsThis study included 152 patients (42 SCD, 74 MCI and 36 AD). All patients underwent comprehensive clinical and neurological assessment. Blood samples were collected for Apolipoprotein E (APOE) genotyping and plasma biomarker (GFAP, NfL, and pTau 181) measurements. Forty-three patients (7 SCD, 27 MCI, and 9 AD) underwent a follow-up (FU) visit after 2 years, and a second plasma sample was collected. Plasma biomarker levels were detected using the Simoa SR-X technology (Quanterix Corp.). Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS software version 28 (IBM SPSS Statistics). Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05.ResultsGFAP, NfL and pTau 181 levels in plasma were lower in SCD and MCI than in AD patients. In particular, plasma GFAP levels were statistically significant different between SCD and AD (p=0.003), and between MCI and AD (p=0.032). Plasma NfL was different in SCD vs MCI (p=0.026), SCD vs AD (p<0.001), SCD vs AD FU (p<0.001), SCD FU vs AD (p=0.033), SCD FU vs AD FU (p=0.011), MCI vs AD (p=0.002), MCI FU vs AD (p=0.003), MCI FU vs AD FU (p=0.003) and MCI vs AD FU (p=0.003). Plasma pTau 181 concentration was significantly different between SCD and AD (p=0.001), MCI and AD (p=0.026), MCI FU and AD (p=0.020). In APOE ϵ4 carriers, a statistically significant increase in plasma NfL (p<0.001) and pTau 181 levels was found (p=0.014). Moreover, an association emerged between age at disease onset and plasma GFAP (p = 0.021) and pTau181 (p < 0.001) levels.Discussion and conclusionsPlasma GFAP, NfL and pTau 181 are promising biomarkers in the diagnosis of the prodromic stages and prognosis of dementia

    Decision Tree-Based Multiple Classifier Systems: An FPGA Perspective

    Combining a hardware approach with a multiple classifier method can deeply improve system performance, since the multiple classifier system can successfully enhance the classification accuracy with respect to a single classifier, and a hardware implementation would lead to systems able to classify samples with high throughput and with a short latency. To the best of our knowledge, no paper in the literature takes into account the multiple classifier scheme as additional design parameter, mainly because of lack of efficient hardware combiner architecture. In order to fill this gap, in this paper we will first propose a novel approach for an efficient hardware implementation of the majority voting combining rule. Then, we will illustrate a design methodology to suitably embed in a digital device a multiple classifier system having Decision Trees as base classifiers and a majority voting rule as combiner. Bagging, Boosting and Random Forests will be taken into account. We will prove the effectiveness of the proposed approach on two real case studies related to Big Data issues

    Near-field spectroscopy of phase segregation in white-light-emitting blends based on low-mass molecules

    We report on the direct observation of phase segregation occurring in thin-film blends of a thiophene monomer and an ammino compound, used in the fabrication of organic white-light-emitting diodes. In the homogeneous and uniform regions of the films, the interaction between the two molecular components gives rise to exciplex states responsible for a broad redshifted photoluminescence emission band, which disappears in the film zones where segregation occurs. This effect has been observed with submicrometer spatial resolution by means of local spectroscopic measurements performed in a scanning near-field optical microscope

    New or little-known bees from Sicily (Hymenoptera: Apoidea)

    The authors report newly recorded species of bees (Hymenoptera, Apoidea) on the Volcan Etna (Sicily). A total of ten species belonging to three families are recorded: Halictidae (8 species), Megachilidae (1 species), and Apidae (1 species). Pseudapis valga (Gerstaecker), Lasioglossum convexiusculum (Schenck) (Halictidae), Hoplitis laevifrons (Morawitz) (Megachilidae) and Tarsalia ancyliformis Popov (Apidae), are reported for the first time for Sicily and the presence of other bee species is confirmed for the Island. Furthermore, this is the first record of the genus Tarsalia Morawitz for the fauna of Sicily. For each species data are given in relation to the altitudinal level, the plants visited, and the ecological quality of the sites where the specimens were found
