    A branch-point approximant for the equation of state of hard spheres

    Using the first seven known virial coefficients and forcing it to possess two branch-point singularities, a new equation of state for the hard-sphere fluid is proposed. This equation of state predicts accurate values of the higher virial coefficients, a radius of convergence smaller than the close-packing value, and it is as accurate as the rescaled virial expansion and better than the Pad\'e [3/3] equations of state.     On the universality of the fluctuation-dissipation ratio in non-equilibrium critical dynamics

    The two-time nonequilibrium correlation and response functions in 1D kinetic classical spin systems with non-conserved dynamics and quenched to their zero-temperature critical point are studied. The exact solution of the kinetic Ising model with Glauber dynamics for a wide class of initial states allows for an explicit test of the universality of the non-equilibrium limit fluctuation-dissipation ratio X_{\infty}. It is shown that the value of X_{\infty} depends on whether the initial state has finitely many domain walls or not and thus two distinct dynamic universality classes can be identified in this model. Generic 1D kinetic spin systems with non-conserved dynamics fall into the same universality classes as the kinetic Glauber-Ising model provided the dynamics is invariant under the C-symmetry of simultaneous spin and magnetic-field reversal. While C-symmetry is satisfied for magnetic systems, it need not be for lattice gases which may therefore display hitherto unexplored types of non-universal kinetics

    Aging in One-Dimensional Coagulation-Diffusion Processes and the Fredrickson-Andersen Model

    We analyse the aging dynamics of the one-dimensional Fredrickson-Andersen (FA) model in the nonequilibrium regime following a low temperature quench. Relaxation then effectively proceeds via diffusion limited pair coagulation (DLPC) of mobility excitations. By employing a familiar stochastic similarity transformation, we map exact results from the free fermion case of diffusion limited pair annihilation to DLPC. Crucially, we are able to adapt the mapping technique to averages involving multiple time quantities. This relies on knowledge of the explicit form of the evolution operators involved. Exact results are obtained for two-time correlation and response functions in the free fermion DLPC process. The corresponding long-time scaling forms apply to a wider class of DLPC processes, including the FA model. We are thus able to exactly characterise the violations of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem (FDT) in the aging regime of the FA model. We find nontrivial scaling forms for the fluctuation-dissipation ratio (FDR) X = X(tw/t), but with a negative asymptotic value X = -3*pi/(6*pi - 16) = -3.307. While this prevents a thermodynamic interpretation in terms of an effective temperature, it is a direct consequence of probing FDT with observables that couple to activated dynamics. The existence of negative FDRs should therefore be a widespread feature in non mean-field systems.Comment: 39 pages, 4 figure

    On the relation between virial coefficients and the close-packing of hard disks and hard spheres

    The question of whether the known virial coefficients are enough to determine the packing fraction η\eta_\infty at which the fluid equation of state of a hard-sphere fluid diverges is addressed. It is found that the information derived from the direct Pad\'e approximants to the compressibility factor constructed with the virial coefficients is inconclusive. An alternative approach is proposed which makes use of the same virial coefficients and of the equation of state in a form where the packing fraction is explicitly given as a function of the pressure. The results of this approach both for hard-disk and hard-sphere fluids, which can straightforwardly accommodate higher virial coefficients when available, lends support to the conjecture that η\eta_\infty is equal to the maximum packing fraction corresponding to an ordered crystalline structure.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures; v2: discussion about hard-square and hard-hexagon systems on a lattice added; five new reference

    The Influence of Different Bleaching Protocols on Dentinal Enzymatic Activity: An In Vitro Study

    This study aimed to investigate matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) activity in human dentin using in-situ and gelatin zymography, after at-home and in-office bleaching, related to their clinical exposure times. Dentin specimens (n = 5) were treated with 35% hydrogen peroxide (50 min per session/4 sessions), 10% carbamide peroxide (180 min/21 sessions), or no treatment. All were subjected to in-situ zymography. Dentin slices were, subsequently, obtained, covered with fluorescein-conjugated gelatin, and examined with confocal laser-scanning microscopy. The fluorescence intensity was quantified and statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Bonferroni tests (α = 0.05). Furthermore, gelatin zymography was performed on protein extracts obtained from dentin powder (N = 8 teeth), treated with hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, with different exposure times (10/50 min for hydrogen peroxide; 252/1260 min for carbamide peroxide). The results of the in-situ zymography showed no statistical differences between the bleached specimens and the control group, with a medium level of gelatinolytic activity expressed in the dentin tubules. The results of gelatin zymography showed an increased expression of pro-MMP-9 in carbamide peroxide groups. The expression of pro-MMP-2 decreased in all the experimental groups. The bleaching treatments performed on the enamel of sound teeth do not influence dentinal enzymatic activity. However, when unprotected dentin tissue is bleached, matrix metalloproteinases are more expressed, particularly when carbamide peroxide is used, proportional to the exposure time

    On the definition of a unique effective temperature for non-equilibrium critical systems

    We consider the problem of the definition of an effective temperature via the long-time limit of the fluctuation-dissipation ratio (FDR) after a quench from the disordered state to the critical point of an O(N) model with dissipative dynamics. The scaling forms of the response and correlation functions of a generic observable are derived from the solutions of the corresponding Renormalization Group equations. We show that within the Gaussian approximation all the local observables have the same FDR, allowing for a definition of a unique effective temperature. This is no longer the case when fluctuations are taken into account beyond that approximation, as shown by a computation up to the first order in the epsilon-expansion for two quadratic observables.     GPX4 regulates cellular necrosis and host resistance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection

    Cellular necrosis during Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) infection promotes both immunopathology and bacterial dissemination. Glutathione peroxidase-4 (Gpx4) is an enzyme that plays a critical role in preventing iron-dependent lipid peroxidation–mediated cell death (ferroptosis), a process previously implicated in the necrotic pathology seen in Mtb-infected mice. Here, we document altered GPX4 expression, glutathione levels, and lipid peroxidation in patients with active tuberculosis and assess the role of this pathway in mice genetically deficient in or overexpressing Gpx4. We found that Gpx4-deficient mice infected with Mtb display substantially increased lung necrosis and bacterial burdens, while transgenic mice overexpressing the enzyme show decreased bacterial loads and necrosis. Moreover, Gpx4-deficient macrophages exhibited enhanced necrosis upon Mtb infection in vitro, an outcome suppressed by the lipid peroxidation inhibitor, ferrostatin-1. These findings provide support for the role of ferroptosis in Mtb-induced necrosis and implicate the Gpx4/GSH axis as a target for host-directed therapy of tuberculosis

    How special is the Solar System?

    Most mechanisms proposed for the formation of planets are modified versions of the mechanism proposed for the solar system. Here we argue that, in terms of those planetary systems which have been observed, the case for the solar system being a typical planetary system has yet to be established. We consider the possibility that most observed planetary systems have been formed in some quite different way.
