    Corporate Governance in the Cause of Peace: An Environmental Perspective

    This Article examines the role of multinational corporations in creating global peace. Part I discusses the role of multinational corporations in the global economy, emphasizing the relationship between multinational corporations, governments, and the environment. Part II explores whether corporations have a moral duty to oppose ill-conceived laws and policy proposals and to support well-conceived laws that encourage efficiency and sustainability, but may hinder short-term profitability. Part III expands and further explores the argument set forth in Part II by examining the continuing dependency of the United States and other industrialized democracies on oil from the Middle East. Part IV concludes the Article by noting that multinational corporations have both the power and responsibility to create products and services that materially enhance human well-being by preserving the natural environment

    Listening to Children: Perceptions of Nature

    This exploratory study investigates children’s perceptions and experiences of nature during a residential outdoor environmental education program and contributes to an understanding of how nature experiences arouse biophilia, a love of life and all living things. Using interviews, naturalistic observation, and artifact collection, we studied children’s responses to nature during and following their participation in a residential environmental education program known as Mountain School. We explored how an examination of biophilic sensibilities can help researchers and educators focus on the vital intersection between the individual, environment, and action. Our study suggests that children’s perceptions of nature are varied and dependent on prior experiences. Our study indicates that after spending time in the wilderness program at Mountain School, children’s perceptions of nature changed. Children formed connections with the fauna and flora of the North Cascades. Our use of biophilia as a framework for inquiry demands that we consider what it means to include the larger biotic community in our discussion of educational reform. This research contributes to an evolving understanding of the relationship between people and the natural world

    GeoZui3D: Data Fusion for Interpreting Oceanographic Data

    GeoZui3D stands for Geographic Zooming User Interface. It is a new visualization software system designed for interpreting multiple sources of 3D data. The system supports gridded terrain models, triangular meshes, curtain plots, and a number of other display objects. A novel center of workspace interaction method unifies a number of aspects of the interface. It creates a simple viewpoint control method, it helps link multiple views, and is ideal for stereoscopic viewing. GeoZui3D has a number of features to support real-time input. Through a CORBA interface external entities can influence the position and state of objects in the display. Extra windows can be attached to moving objects allowing for their position and data to be monitored. We describe the application of this system for heterogeneous data fusion, for multibeam QC and for ROV/AUV monitoring

    AbstractHomocysteine is increasingly recognized as a risk factor for coronary artery disease. An understanding of its metabolism and of the importance of vitamins B6and B12and folate as well as enzyme levels in its regulation will aid the development of therapeutic strategies that, by lowering circulating concentrations, may also lower risk. Possible mechanisms by which elevated homocysteine levels lead to the development and progression of vascular disease include effects on platelets, clotting factors and endothelium. This review presents the clinical and basic scientific evidence supporting the risk and mechanisms of vascular disease associated with elevated homocysteine concentrations as well as the results of preliminary therapeutic trials

    Sequential Electrocoagulation-Electrooxidation For Virus Mitigation in Drinking Water

    Electrochemical water treatment is a promising alternative for small-scale and remote water systems that lack operational capacity or convenient access to reagents for chemical coagulation and disinfection. In this study, the mitigation of viruses was investigated using electrocoagulation as a pretreatment prior to electrooxidation treatment using boron-doped diamond electrodes. This research is the first to investigate a sequential electrocoagulation-electrooxidation treatment system for virus removal. Bench-scale, batch reactors were used to evaluate mitigation of viruses in variable water quality via: a) electrooxidation, and b) a sequential electrocoagulation-electrooxidation treatment train. Electrooxidation of two bacteriophages, MS2 and ΦX174, was inhibited by natural organic matter and turbidity, indicating the probable need for pretreatment. However, the electrocoagulation-electrooxidation treatment train was beneficial only in the model surface waters employed. In model groundwaters, electrocoagulation alone was as good or better than the combined electrocoagulation-electrooxidation treatment train. Reduction of human echovirus was significantly lower than one or both bacteriophages in all model waters, though bacteriophage ΦX174 was a more representative surrogate than MS2 in the presence of natural organic matter and turbidity. Compared to conventional treatment by ferric salt coagulant and free chlorine disinfection, the electrocoagulation-electrooxidation system was less effective in model surface waters but more effective in model groundwaters. Sequential electrocoagulation-electrooxidation was beneficial for some applications, though practical considerations may currently outweigh the benefits
