Information erasure without an energy cost
Landauer argued that the process of erasing the information stored in a
memory device incurs an energy cost in the form of a minimum amount of
mechanical work. We find, however, that this energy cost can be reduced to zero
by paying a cost in angular momentum or any other conserved quantity. Erasing
the memory of Maxwell's demon in this way implies that work can be extracted
from a single thermal reservoir at a cost of angular momentum and an increase
in total entropy. The implications of this for the second law of thermodynamics
are assessed.Comment: 8 pages with 1 figure. Final published versio
Theory of the Jamming Transition at Finite Temperature
A theory for the microscopic structure and the vibrational properties of soft
sphere glass at finite temperature is presented. With an effective potential,
derived here, the phase diagram and vibrational properties are worked out
around the Maxwell critical point at zero temperature and pressure .
Variational arguments and effective medium theory identically predict a
non-trivial temperature scale with
such that low-energy vibrational properties are hard-sphere like for , and zero-temperature soft-sphere like otherwise. However, due to
crossovers in the equation of state relating , , and the packing fraction
, these two regimes lead to four regions where scaling behaviors differ
when expressed in terms of and . Scaling predictions are presented
for the mean-squared displacement, characteristic frequency, shear modulus, and
characteristic elastic length in all regions of the phase diagram.Comment: 8 pages + 3 pages S
Quantum discord and local demons
Quantum discord was proposed as a measure of the "quantumness" of
correlations. There are at least three different discord-like quantities, two
of which determine the difference between the efficiencies of a Szilard's
engine under different sets of restrictions. The three discord measures vanish
simulataneosly. We introduce an easy way to test for zero discord, relate it to
the Cerf-Adami conditional entropy and show that there is no relation between
the discord and the local disitnguishability.Comment: 7 pages, RevTeX. Some minor changes after comments from colleagues,

A Crystal Structure of the Bifunctional Antibiotic Simocyclinone D8, Bound to DNA Gyrase
Simocyclinones are bifunctional antibiotics that inhibit bacterial DNA gyrase by preventing DNA binding to the enzyme. We report the crystal structure of the complex formed between the N-terminal domain of the Escherichia coli gyrase A subunit and simocyclinone D8, revealing two binding pockets that separately accommodate the aminocoumarin and polyketide moieties of the antibiotic. These are close to, but distinct from, the quinolone-binding site, consistent with our observations that several mutations in this region confer resistance to both agents. Biochemical studies show that the individual moieties of simocyclinone D8 are comparatively weak inhibitors of gyrase relative to the parent compound, but their combination generates a more potent inhibitor. Our results should facilitate the design of drug molecules that target these unexploited binding pockets

Is the quantum world composed of propensitons?
In this paper I outline my propensiton version of quantum theory (PQT). PQT is a fully micro-realistic version of quantum theory that provides us with a very natural possible solution to the fundamental wave/particle problem, and is free of the severe defects of orthodox quantum theory (OQT) as a result. PQT makes sense of the quantum world. PQT recovers all the empirical success of OQT and is, furthermore, empirically testable (although not as yet tested). I argue that Einstein almost put forward this version of quantum theory in 1916/17 in his papers on spontaneous and induced radiative transitions, but retreated from doing so because he disliked the probabilistic character of the idea. Subsequently, the idea was overlooked because debates about quantum theory polarised into the Bohr/Heisenberg camp, which argued for the abandonment of realism and determinism, and the Einstein/Schrödinger camp, which argued for the retention of realism and determinism, no one, as a result, pursuing the most obvious option of retaining realism but abandoning determinism. It is this third, overlooked option that leads to PQT. PQT has implications for quantum field theory, the standard model, string theory, and cosmology. The really important point, however, is that it is experimentally testable. I indicate two experiments in principle capable of deciding between PQT and OQT
Different Scenarios for Critical Glassy Dynamics
We study the role of different terms in the -body potential of glass
forming systems on the critical dynamics near the glass transition. Using a
simplified spin model with quenched disorder, where the different terms of the
real -body potential are mapped into multi-spin interactions, we identified
three possible scenarios. For each scenario we introduce a ``minimal'' model
representative of the critical glassy dynamics near, both above and below, the
critical transition lin e. For each ``minimal'' model we discuss the low
temperature equilibrium dynamics.Comment: Completely revised version, 8 pages, 5 figures, typeset using

Second Law of Thermodynamics with Discrete Quantum Feedback Control
A new thermodynamic inequality is derived which leads to the maximum work
that can be extracted from multi-heat baths with the assistance of discrete
quantum feedback control. The maximum work is determined by the free-energy
difference and a generalized mutual information content between the
thermodynamic system and the feedback controller. This maximum work can exceed
that in conventional thermodynamics and, in the case of a heat cycle with two
heat baths, the heat efficiency can be greater than that of the Carnot cycle.
The consistency of our results with the second law of thermodynamics is ensured
by the fact that work is needed for information processing of the feedback
controller
