    A high resolution study of authigenic Be isotopes (10Be and 9Be) combined with continuous relative paleointensity records has been performed along the same marine sedimentary sequences from the Portuguese margin (N.E. Atlantic) covering the past 300 ka in order to assess relationships between geomagnetic moment variations and 10Be production rate variations. A carefull examination of the various ways of taking into account environmental disturbing effects on the authigenic 10Be concentration leads to the conclusion that the most reliable proxy of cosmonuclide production rates is presently the authigenic 10Be/9Be ratio. Eight intervals of significant authigenic 10Be/9Be enhancement evidence geomagnetic moment drops related to global paleomagnetic excursions, some being already admitted, others being proposed as new geomagnetic features. Since, contrarily to sedimentary magnetic remanence, the authigenic 10Be/9Be records dipole moment variations without significant acquisition delay, it provides better constraints on their timing. Comparison of 10Be/9Be and benthic ÎŽ18O records from the same cores suggests that dipole moment lows preferentially occured during or at the end of interglacial episodes, with a quasi-period of 100 ka

    A High-Throughput Screening Assay for Pyruvate Carboxylase

    Pyruvate carboxylase (PC) catalyzes the conversion of pyruvate to oxaloacetate (OAA), an important metabolic reaction in a wide range of organisms. Small molecules directed against PC would enable detailed studies on the metabolic role of this enzyme and would have the potential to be developed into pharmacological agents. Currently, specific and potentsmall molecule regulators of PC are unavailable. To assist in efforts to find, develop, and characterize small molecule effectors of PC, a novel fixed-time assay has been developed based on the reaction of OAA with the diazonium salt, Fast Violet B (FVB), which produces a colored adduct with an absorbance maximum at 530 nm. This fixed time assay is reproducible, sensitive and responsive to known effectors of Rhizobium etli PC, Staphylococcus aureus PC, and Listeria monocytogenes PC, and is highly amenable to high-throughput screening. The assay was validated using a plate uniformity assessment test and a pilot screen of a library of 1280 compounds. The results indicate that the assay is suitable for screening small molecule libraries to find novel small molecule effectors of PC

    Validation of the Baveno Vi Criteria to Identify Low Risk Cirrhotic Patients not Requiring Endoscopic Surveillance for Varices

    BACKGROUND: The Baveno VI guidelines propose that cirrhotic patients with a liver stiffness measurement (LSM) 150000/ÎŒL can avoid screening endoscopy as their combination is highly specific for excluding clinically significant varices. The aim of the study was to validate these criteria. METHODS: Transient elastography data was collected from two institutions from 2006-2015. Inclusion criteria were a LSM â©Ÿ10kPa and an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy within 12 months, with a diagnosis of compensated chronic liver disease. Exclusion criteria were porto-mesenteric-splenic vein thrombosis and non-cirrhotic portal hypertension. Varices were graded as low risk (grade 150) are at low risk of having varices and do not need a screening endoscopy. Varices are a complication of cirrhosis, confer a risk of serious bleeding, and can be diagnosed and treated by endoscopy. Our study reviewed the clinical records of patients who have had liver stiffness scans and endoscopy over a 9 year period at two hospitals. The results show that only about 2% of patients who meet the Baveno VI criteria will be miss classified as not having varices

    Quantum blobs are the smallest phase space units of phase space compatible with the uncertainty principle of quantum mechanics and having the symplectic group as group of symmetries. Quantum blobs are in a bijective correspondence with the squeezed coherent states from standard quantum mechanics, of which they are a phase space picture. This allows us to propose a substitute for phase space in quantum mechanics. We study the relationship between quantum blobs with a certain class of level sets defined by Fermi for the purpose of representing geometrically quantum states.Comment: Prepublication.     Understanding young people's transitions in university halls through space and time

    This article contributes to the theoretical discussion about young people's transitions through space and time. Space and time are complex overarching concepts that have creative potential in deepening understanding of transition. The focus of this research is young people's experiences of communal living in university halls. It is argued that particular space-time concepts draw attention to different facets of experience and in combination deepen the understanding of young people's individual and collective transitions. The focus of the article is the uses of the space-time concepts 'routine', 'representation', 'rhythm' and 'ritual' to research young people's experiences.     Returning home: heritage work among the Stl'atl'imx of the Lower Lillooet River Valley

    This article focusses on heritage practices in the tensioned landscape of the Stl’atl’imx (pronounced Stat-lee-um) people of the Lower Lillooet River Valley, British Columbia, Canada. Displaced from their traditional territories and cultural traditions through the colonial encounter, they are enacting, challenging and remaking their heritage as part of their long term goal to reclaim their land and return ‘home’. I draw on three examples of their heritage work: graveyard cleaning, the shifting ‘official’/‘unofficial’ heritage of a wagon road, and marshalling of the mountain named Nsvq’ts (pronounced In-SHUCK-ch) in order to illustrate how the past is strategically mobilised in order to substantiate positions in the present. While this paper focusses on heritage in an Indigenous and postcolonial context, I contend that the dynamics of heritage practices outlined here are applicable to all heritage practices
