Potassium (K) is an essential nutrient for upland rice growth, but little information on the effects of K on root growth and nutrient uptake capacity of upland rice is found. Therefore, an experiment was conducted under greenhouse conditions to evaluate the influence of soil K levels on root growth and nutrient uptake of four upland rice cultivars. A completely randomized experimental design, in a 4x4 factorial scheme (4 levels of K: 20, 40, 80, and 160 mg dm-3; 4 cultivars: Caiapó, BRS-Primavera, IAC-202, and Maravilha) was used, with four replications. Based on regression equations, the highest values of root length density would be found with 136 mg dm-3 of K. The root diameter and dry matter, shoot dry matter and shoot K concentration increased linearly with the increasing K rates. The shoot K concentration of the upland rice cultivars did not differ. The increased level of K in the soil reduced the shoot Ca concentration of intermediate and modern cultivars, and the shoot Mg concentration of all cultivars. The potassium fertilization increased the plant growth, but the magnitude of this effect varied according to the cultivar. © 2017, Universidade Federal Rural do Semi-Arid. All Rights Reserved.301324

Silicon is not considered an essential element for plant development and growth, but its absorption brings several benefits to some crops, especially rice, by increasing cellular wall thickness, providing mechanical resistance to the penetration of fungi, improving the opening angle of leaves and making them more erect, decreasing self-shading and increasing resistance to lodging, especially under high nitrogen rates. To evaluate the effects of nitrogen and silicon fertilization on vegetative and yield components, plant height, and yield of rice cultivar IAC 202, an experiment was carried out combining three nitrogen rates (5, 75 and 150 mg N kg-1 soil) applied as urea, and four silicon rates (0, 200, 400 and 600 mg SiO2 kg-1 soil) applied as calcium silicate. Trial was set up in a completely randomized design 3 ´ 4 factorial scheme, (N = 5). Nitrogen fertilization increased the number of stems and panicles per square meter and the total number of spikelets, reflecting on grain productivity. Excessive tillering caused by inadequate nitrogen fertilization reduced the percentage of fertile stalks, spikelet fertility and grain mass. Silicon fertilization reduced the number of blank spikelets per panicles and increased grain mass, but did not affect grain productivity

CONCLUSÃO: A aterosclerose carotídea apresentou alta freqüência populacional (52%) e associação com idade, obesidade, acidente vascular cerebral, coronariopatia e tabagismo.BACKGROUND: A high prevalence of carotid atherosclerosis in the population and its frequent association with several risk factors contribute to high morbidity and mortality rates. OBJECTIVE: To investigate frequency and association of extracranial carotid atherosclerosis with age, sex, hypertension, ischemic coronary disease, smoking, type 2 diabetes mellitus, obesity, peripheral arterial disease, stroke, carotid occlusion, intima-media thickness and kinking. METHODS: The carotid and bilateral extracranial arteries of 367 individuals (132 males and 235 females), with a mean of 63 years of age (35-91 years) were evaluated via anamnesis, clinical semiology and ultrasonography. The possible association between carotid atherosclerosis, represented by unspecific atheromatous plaques with stenosis > 10% or discrete and diffuse atheromatosis with stenosis < 10% and the risk factors listed above was statistically analyzed by the odds ratio with a confidence interval of 95%. RESULTS: The frequency of carotid atherosclerosis and intima-media thickness was, respectively, 52 and 30.2%. There was an association between atherosclerosis types and age (> 64 years), stroke, obesity and smoking. When only carotid stenosis > 60% was considered, there was an association with age (> 64 years), carotid occlusion and coronary disease. Intima-media thickness was associated with age (> 64 years), kinking, carotid occlusion, hypertension and ankle-brachial index < 0.9. CONCLUSION: Carotid atherosclerosis is highly prevalent in the population (52%) and is associated with age, obesity, stroke, coronary disease, and smoking

CONCLUSÃO: O hábito de fumar não interferiu no tempo em que ocorre a máxima dilatação da artéria braquial.OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the time required to achieve maximum brachial artery dilation by means of flow-mediated dilation, as well as the differences in such dilation as four groups of smoking and nonsmoking pregnant and non-pregnant women are compared. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cross-sectional study where the brachial artery diameter was measured considering four time spans following pressoric stimulus (30, 60, 90 and 120 seconds) in four groups of women in the age range between 20 and 30 years as follows: nonsmoking pregnant women (n = 47) and smoking pregnant women (n = 33) with gestational age between 24 and 28 weeks, nonsmoking (n = 34) and smoking (n = 19) non-pregnant women. RESULTS: The evaluation of dilation of the brachial artery at the different time spans following pressoric stimulus demonstrated maximum dilation for all the groups at "60 seconds" following the cuff deflation (p < 0.01). Brachial artery flow-mediated dilation was greater among nonsmoking pregnant women as compared with smoking ones (p = 0.03), as well as in the group of nonsmoking, non-pregnant women as compared with the smoking ones (p = 0.03). CONCLUSION: The smoking habit does not interfere in the time span required to achieve maximum brachial artery dilation

Adherence to cervical and breast cancer programs is crucial to improving screening performance

Publicado onlineINTRODUCTION: Cervical and breast cancer are the most common malignancies among women worldwide. Effective screening can facilitate early detection and dramatically reduce mortality rates. The interface between those screening patients and patients most needing screening is complex, and women in remote areas of rural counties face additional barriers that limit the effectiveness of cancer prevention programs. This study compared various methods to improve compliance with mass screening for breast and cervical cancer among women in a remote, rural region of Brazil. METHODS: In 2003, a mobile unit was used to perform 10,156 mammograms and Papanicolaou smear tests for women living in the Barretos County region of São Paulo state, Brazil (consisting of 19 neighbouring cities). To reach the women, the following community outreach strategies were used: distribution of flyers and pamphlets; media broadcasts (via radio and car loudspeakers); and community healthcare agents (CHCAs) making home visits. RESULTS: The most useful intervention appeared to be the home visits by healthcare agents or CHCAs. These agents of the Family Health Programme of the Brazilian Ministry of Health reached an average of 45.6% of those screened, with radio advertisements reaching a further 11.9%. The great majority of the screened women were illiterate or had elementary level schooling (80.9%) and were of 'poor' or 'very poor' socioeconomic class (67.2%). CONCLUSIONS: Use of a mobile screening unit is a useful strategy in developing countries where local health systems have inadequate facilities for cancer screening in underserved populations. A multimodal approach to community outreach strategies, especially using CHCAs and radio advertisements, can improve the uptake of mass screening in low-income, low-educational background female populations

O único trabalho que correlacionou a espessura do SUI com risco de rotura uterina, sem interferir na conduta do obstetra ou antecipar o parto, foi feito por medidas bidimensionais abdominais da espessura total.PURPOSE: to compare the intra and interobserver reproducibility of the total thickness measurement of the inferior uterine segment (IUS), through the abdominal route, and of the muscle layer measurement, through the vaginal route, using bi and tridimensional ultrasonography. METHODS: the IUS thickness measurement of 30 women, between the 36th and 39th weeks of gestation with previous caesarean section, done by two observers, was studied. Abdominal ultrasonography with the patient in both supine and lithotomy position was performed. In the sagittal section, the IUS was identified and four bidimensional images and two tridimensional blocks of the total thickness were collected through the abdominal route, and the same for the muscle layer, through the vaginal route. Tridimensional acquisitions were manipulated in the multiplanar mode. The time was measured with a chronometer. Reproducibility was evaluated by the computation of the absolute difference between measurements, the ratio of differences smaller than 1 mm, the intraclass coefficient (ICC), and the Bland and Altman's concordance limits. RESULTS: the average bidimensional measurement of IUS thickness was 7.4 mm through the abdominal and 2.7 mm through the vaginal route, and the tridimensional measurement was 6.9 mm through the abdominal and 5.1 mm through the vaginal route. Intra- and interobserver reproducibility of vaginal versus abdominal route: smaller absolute difference (0.2-0.4 mm versus 0.8-1.5 mm), greater ratio of differences (85.8-97.8% versus 48.7-72,8%), with p<0,0001, higher ICC (0.8-0.9 versus 0.6-0.8) and lower concordance limits (-0.9 to 1.5 versus -3.8 to 4 mm) for the vaginal route. Tri versus bidimensional ultrasonography: lower absolute difference (0.2-1.4 versus 0.4-1.5 mm), higher ratio of differences (57.7-97.8% versus 48.7-91.7%) with p>0.05[A1] and similar lower concordance limits (-38 to 3.4 versus -3.6 to 4 mm) for tridimensional ultrasonography and ICC (0.6-0.9 versus 0.7-0.9). CONCLUSIONS: from the above, we came to the conclusion that the measurement of the IUS muscle layer, through the vaginal route using tridimensional ultrasonography is more reproducible. Nevertheless, our results do not indicate that this measurement shows any clinical evidence to predict uterine tear, as that was not the aim of this study. The only work that has correlated the UIS thickness with risk of uterine tear, without interfering in the obstetrician behavior or anticipating delivery, was done by bidimensional abdominal measurements of the total thickness

Objective: It was the aim of this study to compare diagnostic performances of the BD SurePath (TM) liquid-based Papanicolaou test (LBC) and the conventional Papanicolaou test (CPT) in cervical samples of women from remote rural areas of Brazil. Study Design: Specimens were collected by mobile units provided by Barretos Cancer Hospital. This report evaluates the manual screening arm of the RODEO study. Of 12,048 women seen between May and December 2010, 6,001 were examined using LBC and 6,047 using CPT. Results: Comparative (LBC vs. CPT) outcomes were: all abnormal tests, 2.1 versus 1.0%; ASC-US (atypical squannous cells of unknown significance), 0.7 versus 0.1%; ASC-H (atypical squamous cells with possible high-grade squannous intraepithelial lesions) and AGC (atypical glandular cells), 0.4 versus 0.3%; LSIL (low-grade squannous intraepithelial lesions), 0.7 versus 0.3%; HSIL (high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions), 0.4 versus 0.2%, and unsatisfactory, 0.03 versus 0.08%. The LBC arm detected significantly more lesions (ASC-US+) than CPT (p < 0.001); however, when we divided the diagnoses into two groups, ASC-H (negative/ASC-US/LSIL) and ASC-H+ (ASC-H/AGC/HSIL), the difference was not statistically important (p = 0.213). Conclusions: With inherent difficulties in patient recruitment and patient compliance with cancer screening, best test performance including human papillomavirus test capability are vitally necessary in Brazil's struggle to reduce cervical cancer

CONCLUSÕES: os parâmetros avaliados (IR, IP e relação S/D) apresentam valores decrescentes entre a 22ª e a 38ª semana, sem diferença entre os lados direito e esquerdo do feto.PURPOSE: to describe values found for the resistance index (RI), pulsatility index (PI) and the systole/diastole (S/D) ratio of fetal renal arteries in non-complicated gestations between the 22nd and the 38th week, and to evaluate whether those values vary along that period. METHODS: observational study, where 45 fetuses from non-complicated gestations have been evaluated in the 22nd, 26th, 30th and 38th weeks of gestational age. Doppler ultrasonography has been performed by the same observer, using a device with 4 to 7 MHz transducer. For the acquisition of the renal arteries velocity record, a 1 mm to 2 mm probe has been placed in the mean third of the renal artery for the evaluation through pulsed Doppler ultrasonography. The measurement of RI, PI and S/D ratio from three consecutive waves was performed with the automatic mode. To detect significant differences in the indexes' values along gestation, we have compared values obtained at the different gestational ages, through repeated measures ANOVA, followed by Tukey's post-hoc test. RESULTS: There were no significant differences between the right and left renal arteries, when the RI, IP and S/D ratio were compared. Nevertheless, a change in the values of these parameters has been observed between the 22nd week (RI=0.9 ± 0.02; PI=2.4 ± 0.02; S/D ratio=11.6 ± 2.2; mean ± standard deviation of the combined mean values of the right and left renal artery) and the 38th week (RI=0.8 ± 0.03; PI=2.1 ± 0.2; S/D ratio=8.7 ± 2.3) of gestation. CONCLUSIONS: the parameters evaluated (RI, PI and S/D ratio) have presented decreasing values between the 22nd and 38th, with no difference between the fetus's right and left sides

Extended minimally invasive autopsy: Technical improvements for the investigation of cardiopulmonary events in COVID-19

    Get PDF
OBJECTIVES: Ultrasound-guided minimally invasive autopsies (MIA-US) are an alternative to conventional autopsies and have been used in our institution to investigate the pathophysiology of COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic. Owing to the limitations of post-mortem biopsies for evaluating cardiopulmonary events involving large vessels, we continuously improved the technique during this period. Objectives: To demonstrate the usefulness of an extended MIA-US technique (EMIA-US) for the study of thoracic involvement in COVID-19. METHOD: US-guided percutaneous tissue sampling was combined with a small thoracic incision (≤5 cm), allowing for the sampling of larger tissue samples or even the entire organ (lungs and heart). RESULTS: EMIA-US was performed for eight patients who died of COVID-19 in 2021. We demonstrate cardiopulmonary events, mainly thromboembolism and myocardial infarction, that could be evaluated using EMIA-US. CONCLUSIONS: Minimally invasive image-guided post-mortem tissue sampling is a flexible and practical method to conduct post-mortem studies of human diseases, mainly in areas that do not have autopsy facilities or, alternatively, when autopsy is not possible owing to financial constraints, cultural and religious values, or for safety reasons, such as in the case of highly contagious infectious diseases. We present evidence that EMIA-US is feasible and can be used as an alternative to increase the accuracy of MIA-US in detecting cardiopulmonary events involving large vessels, which may not be assessed through post-mortem biopsies
