J-beveling of pipe ends with a hand-held tool
Adapted cutter, driven by a hand-held, variable-speed power drill, is used in the field to cut J-bevels on the ends of stainless-steel or aluminum pipe to be joined by precision welding. With this tool an acceptable bevel is cut within 3 percent of the time required for grinding and filing
Tool simplifies machining of pipe ends for precision welding
Single tool prepares a pipe end for precision welding by simultaneously performing internal machining, end facing, and bevel cutting to specification standards. The machining operation requires only one milling adjustment, can be performed quickly, and produces the high quality pipe-end configurations required to ensure precision-welded joints
Polaron Excitations in Doped C60: Effects of Disorders
Effects on C by thermal fluctuations of phonons, misalignment of
C molecules in a crystal, and other intercalated impurities (remaining
C, oxygens, and so on) are simulated by disorder potentials. The
Su-Schrieffer-Heeger--type electron-phonon model for doped C is solved
with gaussian bond disorders and also with site disorders. Sample average is
performed over sufficient number of disorder configurations. The distributions
of bond lengths and electron densities are shown as functions of the disorder
strength and the additional electron number. Stability of polaron excitations
as well as dimerization patterns is studied. Polarons and dimerizations in
lightly doped cases (C) are relatively stable against disorders,
indicated by peak structures in distribution functions. In more heavily doped
cases, the several peaks merge into a single peak, showing the breakdown of
polaron structures as well as the decrease of the dimerization strength.
Possibility of the observation of polaronic lattice distortions and electron
structures in doped C is discussed.Comment: Note: This manusript was accepted for publication in Physical Review

Vibrational spectra of C60C8H8 and C70C8H8 in the rotor-stator and polymer phases
C60-C8H8 and C70-C8H8 are prototypes of rotor-stator cocrystals. We present
infrared and Raman spectra of these materials and show how the rotor-stator
nature is reflected in their vibrational properties. We measured the
vibrational spectra of the polymer phases poly(C60C8H8) and poly(C70C8H8)
resulting from a solid state reaction occurring on heating. Based on the
spectra we propose a connection pattern for the fullerene in poly(C60C8H8),
where the symmetry of the C60 is D2h. On illuminating the C60-C8H8 cocrystal
with green or blue light a photochemical reaction was observed leading to a
similar product to that of the thermal polymerization.Comment: 26 pages, 8 figures, to appear in Journal of Physical Chemistry B 2nd

Theory of Superconducting of doped fullerenes
We develop the nonadiabatic polaron theory of superconductivity of
taking into account the polaron band narrowing and realistic
electron-phonon and Coulomb interactions. We argue that the crossover from the
BCS weak-coupling superconductivity to the strong-coupling polaronic and
bipolaronic superconductivity occurs at the BCS coupling constant independent of the adiabatic ratio, and there is nothing ``beyond'' Migdal's
theorem except small polarons for any realistic electron-phonon interaction. By
the use of the polaronic-type function and the ``exact'' diagonalization in the
truncated Hilbert space of vibrons (``phonons'') we calculate the ground state
energy and the electron spectral density of the molecule. This
allows us to describe the photoemission spectrum of in a wide
energy region and determine the electron-phonon interaction. The strongest
coupling is found with the high-frequency pinch mode and with the
Frenkel exciton. We clarify the crucial role of high-frequency bosonic
excitations in doped fullerenes which reduce the bare bandwidth and the Coulomb
repulsion allowing the intermediate and low-frequency phonons to couple two
small polarons in a Cooper pair. The Eliashberg-type equations are solved for
low-frequency phonons. The value of the superconducting , its pressure
dependence and the isotope effect are found to be in a remarkable agreement
with the available experimental data.Comment: 20 pages, Latex, 4 figures available upon reques
Quantum fluctuations of polarons on molecules
The dynamic Jahn-Teller splitting of the six equivalent polarons due
to quantum fluctuations is studied in the framework of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes
formalism. The tunneling induced level splittings are determined to be and for and
, respectively, which should give rise to observable effects in
experiments.Comment: REVTEX 3.0, 13 pages, to be published in Phys. Rev.
Cell wall remodeling mediated by specific PME genes plays a role in grapevine response to Botrytis cinerea
Botrytis cinerea (Bc) is one of the main pathogens affecting the cultivated grapevine. A key role in grapevine tissue colonization is played by cell wall (CW) remodeling driven by CW Modifying Enzymes (CWMEs), expressed both by the host and the pathogen. Their action can impact CW integrity and trigger specific immune signaling, thus influencing Bc infection outcome. To further characterize the role of the CW in the grapevine response to Bc, two contrasting genotypes in their resistance to the fungus were artificially inoculated at full bloom. RNA-seq analysis and biochemical characterization of the CW and its modification in samples collected at 24 hours post-inoculation highlighted significant differences between genotypes. A gene set enrichment analysis indicated several over-represented categories upon infection, with a general down-regulation of those genes related to CW organization and pectin modification, mostly in the resistant genotype. Within the down-regulated CWMEs, Pectin Methyl-Esterase (PME) genes were found highly represented. Unlike, VviPME10 was significantly induced upon infection and was further characterized since its putative ortholog in Arabidopsis was associated with resistance to Bc. VviPME10 promoter hosts several predicted binding sites for VviWRKY3, a defense-associated transcription factor, as highlighted by DAP-seq analysis. This evidence is under confirmation by luciferase assays. In addition, the artificial inoculation with Bc of leaves from six VviPME10 knock-out (KO) edited lines showed significantly larger lesion areas when compared to control plants at 5 dpi. Together, these results suggest that pectin modification, mediated by VviPME10, plays an important role in the grapevine response to Bc
Observation and Assignment of Silent and Higher Order Vibrations in the Infrared Transmission of C60 Crystals
We report the measurement of infrared transmission of large C60 single
crystals. The spectra exhibit a very rich structure with over 180 vibrational
absorptions visible in the 100 - 4000 cm-1 range. Many silent modes are
observed to have become weakly IR-active. We also observe a large number of
higher order combination modes. The temperature (77K - 300K) and pressure (0 -
25KBar) dependencies of these modes were measured and are presented. Careful
analysis of the IR spectra in conjunction with Raman scattering data showing
second order modes and neutron scattering data, allow the selection of the 46
vibrational modes C60. We are able to fit *all* of the first and second order
data seen in the present IR spectra and the previously published Raman data
(~300 lines total), using these 46 modes and their group theory allowed second
order combinations.Comment: REVTEX v3.0 in LaTeX. 12 pages. 8 Figures by request. c60lon
