The use of a practicum seminar led by an urban practicum advisor (UPA) to help secondary urban student teachers become effective practitioners.
Many new secondary teachers will begin their careers in urban schools because so many vacancies exist there. Because secondary urban teacher education programs are virtually extinct, many teachers will be unprepared to work in the urban classroom. Cooperating teachers may not be familiar with a wide variety of methods for managing urban classrooms. College/university supervisors, while some may be familiar with current research on urban teaching, do not usually spend enough time with student teachers. Full teaching loads also preclude both from devoting adequate time to student teachers. Urban student teachers may be left on their own. Many urban student teachers become frustrated and quit, or survive long enough to finish their practica, but do not seek employment in urban schools. Alternative methods must be found to prepare urban student teachers
Compensation in epitaxial cubic SiC films
Hall measurements on four n-type cubic SiC films epitaxially grown by chemical vapor deposition on SiC substrates are reported. The temperature dependent carrier concentrations indicate that the samples are highly compensated. Donor ionization energies, E sub D, are less than one half the values previously reported. The values for E sub D and the donor concentration N sub D, combined with results for small bulk platelets with nitrogen donors, suggest the relation E sub D (N sub D) = E sub D(O) - alpha N sub N sup 1/3 for cubic SiC. A curve fit gives alpha is approx 2.6x10/5 meV cm and E sub D (O) approx 48 meV, which is the generally accepted value of E sub D(O) for nitrogen donors in cubic SiC
Digital Watermarking in Wavelet Transform Domain
This paper presents a technique for the digital watermarking of still images based on the wavelet transform. The watermark (binary image) is embedded into original image in its wavelet domain. The original unmarked image is required for watermark extraction. The method of embedding of digital watermarks in wavelet transform domain was analyzed and verified on grey scale static images
Efficacy of Crown (carbathiin and thiabendazole) to control seed borne Ascochyta blight on kabuli chickpea
Non-Peer ReviewedAscochyta blight (Ascochyta rabiei) of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) is an economically important disease transmitted through the seed and stubble. In 2000, approximately 25% of the chickpea acreage in Saskatchewan was lost as a result of ascochyta blight (Pearsy, 2000). Partial resistance in âSanfordâ, âDwelleyâ, âMylesâ, and âB90â chickpea cultivars becomes less effective as the plant matures. The sexual stage (Didymella rabiei) has been found on chickpea residues in some regions of Saskatchewan (Chongo et al., 2000). Ascochyta infection from seed-borne inoculum occurs as scattered patches across the field and the disease spread from these patches. When infected seeds are sown, the fungus infects the seedling as it emerges and continue to sporulates on the plant until it eventually infects neighbouring plants. This disease may cause serious damage to a chickpea crop under cool and wet growing conditions, particularly at flowering and pod setting (Nene, 1984). Infected seed is presumed responsible for the introduction of the pathogen into new areas (Kaiser and Hannan, 1988). Phonon softening and dispersion in the 1D Holstein model of spinless fermions
We investigate the effect of electron-phonon interaction on the phononic
properties in the one-dimensional half-filled Holstein model of spinless
fermions. By means of determinantal Quantum Monte Carlo simulation we show that
the behavior of the phonon dynamics gives a clear signal of the transition to a
charge-ordered phase, and the phase diagram obtained in this way is in
excellent agreement with previous DMRG results. By analyzing the phonon
propagator we extract the renormalized phonon frequency, and study how it first
softens as the transition is approached and then subsequently hardens in the
charge-ordered phase. We then show how anharmonic features develop in the
phonon propagator, and how the interaction induces a sizable dispersion of the
dressed phonon in the non-adiabatic regime.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure
Charge-Stripe Order and Superconductivity in
A combined resistivity and hard x-ray diffraction study of superconductivity
and charge ordering in , as a function of Pt
substitution and externally applied hydrostatic pressure, is presented.
Experiments are focused on samples near the critical composition where competition and switching between charge order and
superconductivity is established. We show that charge order as a function of
pressure in is preempted - and hence
triggered - by a structural transition. Charge ordering appears uniaxially
along the short crystallographic (1,0,1) domain axis with a
modulation. Based on these results we
draw a charge-order phase diagram and discuss the relation between stripe

A New Species of Chromis (Teleostei: Pomacentridae) from Mesophotic Coral Ecosystems of Rapa Nui (Easter Island) and Salas y Gomez, Chile
A new species of Chromis (Teleostei: Pomacentridae) is described from three specimens collected at 90 m depth in a mesophotic coral ecosystem at Rapa Nui, Chile. Chromis mamatapara, new species, can be distinguished from its congeners by the following combination of characters: dorsal-fin rays XIV,13â14; pectoral-fin rays 18â19, third from top of fin longest; tubed lateral-line scales 18; total gill rakers on first arch 30â32; vertebrae 11ĂŸ15; and by coloration of living specimens, especially the presence of a single, pronounced, white spot, roughly the same diameter as the orbit, located where the posterior base of the dorsal fin intersects the caudal peduncle. The most similar DNA barcode (mitochondrial COI gene), among those available, is Chromis tingting from Japan (3.5% uncorrected divergence); however, C. mamatapara, new species, also superficially resembles other species for which sequences are unavailable for comparisons, including C. okamurai from Japan and C. struhsakeri from Hawaii. Due to the high geographic isolation and consequently high endemism in the Rapa Nui region, we believe that C. mamatapara, new species, is endemic to mesophotic ecosystems of Rapa Nui, Isla Salas y Gomez, and nearby seamounts, a discovery that contributes to the high endemism of the region and thus the need for conservation efforts
Vibrational spectra of C60C8H8 and C70C8H8 in the rotor-stator and polymer phases
C60-C8H8 and C70-C8H8 are prototypes of rotor-stator cocrystals. We present
infrared and Raman spectra of these materials and show how the rotor-stator
nature is reflected in their vibrational properties. We measured the
vibrational spectra of the polymer phases poly(C60C8H8) and poly(C70C8H8)
resulting from a solid state reaction occurring on heating. Based on the
spectra we propose a connection pattern for the fullerene in poly(C60C8H8),
where the symmetry of the C60 is D2h. On illuminating the C60-C8H8 cocrystal
with green or blue light a photochemical reaction was observed leading to a
