A Finite-Volume Formulation for Fully Compressible Premixed Combustion using the Level Set Approach

    Get PDF
The level set approach is used for fully compressible simulations of premixed combustion. The motivation of the present work is to numerically simulate thermo-acoustic combustion instabilities. These instabilities are excited by the interaction of heat release and pressure fluctuations, which can numerically only be accurately accounted for in fully compressible simulations. A major challenge is the discretization and the inclusion of the heat release due to combustion at the flame front. To this end, a finite-volume formulation, which uses the ideas of the ghost-fluid method [Fedkiw et al. J. Comp. Phys. 154, 393-427 (1999)], is developed  based on a low-dissipation scheme which has been successfully used for large-eddy simulations of non-reacting flows

A coupled lattice Boltzmann/finite volume method for turbulent gas-liquid bubbly flows

[EN] A simulation method for large eddy simulations (LES) of dispersed gas-liquid bubbly flows based on an Eulerian-Eulerian (E-E) model is presented. A volume averaging approach is used resulting in a set of conservation equations for each phase. The liquid phase is predicted using a lattice Boltzmann method, while the gas phase is modeled by a finite volume method. Interface terms between the phases result in a two-way coupled system. Both methods are formulated on a shared Cartesian grid similar to the concept in [1], which facilitates the exchange of coupling terms between the two solvers and an efficient implementation on high-performance computing (HPC) hardware. This coupled multiphase approach combines the advantages of the lattice Boltzmann (LB) method as an efficient prediction tool for low Mach number flows with those of a finite volume method used for the modeling of the phase with larger density changes by solving the Navier-Stokes equations. To accurately model the turbulent motion of the liquid phase on all resolved scales, a cumulant-based collision step for the lattice Boltzmann method [2] is combined with a Smagorinsky sub-grid-scale turbulence model. In the finite volume solver, the effect of the sub-grid-scale turbulence is incorporated according to the MILES approach. For the validation of the new method, large-eddy simulations of turbulent bubbly flows are performed. The accuracy of the predictions is evaluated comparing the results to experimental reference data for a generic test case, for which good agreement is found. The applicability of the method will be demonstrated for a bubbly turbulent channel flow, which mimics the phenomena in the electrochemical machining (ECM) process.Lauwers, D.; Meinke, M.; Schröder, W. 9 p., 5 tables, 11 figures and bibliographyThe polyopisthocotylean Sparicotyle chrysophrii (Van Beneden et Hesse, 1863) was experimentally transmitted to gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata L.) by exposure to eggs (EGT) and by cohabitation with naturally parasitized fi sh (CT). In EGT trials, the infection was successfully transmitted by introducing containers with monogenean eggs in the fi sh tanks, with the highest infection level (85.7% prevalence, 3.3 mean intensity) achieved at 6 weeks post exposure (p.e.) to the infection dose of 650 eggs per tank. In CT trials, the progression of the infection was faster and reached higher levels than in EGT. When using small fi sh juveniles (30 g) (CT-2), infection reached 100% prevalence (mean intensity 8 monogeneans/fi sh) at 5 weeks p.e., but no eggs could be found in the fi sh even 10 weeks p.e. By contrast, when larger juveniles (150 g) were used (CT-1), infection levels were lower, but mature adults with eggs were detected starting from 8 weeks p.e. The effect of the parasite on the condition factor, haematocrit, haemoglobin concentration (Hb), red blood cell counts, mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC), mean corpuscular haemoglobin content (MCH) and mean cellular volume (MCV) of infected fi sh was studied in CT trials. The infection produced hypochromic anaemia, since Hb concentration signifi cantly decreased at 5 and 10 weeks p.e. in CT-2 and at 8 weeks p.e. in CT-1. MCHC was signifi cantly lower in parasitized than in control fi sh at 5 and 8 weeks p.e. in CT-2 and CT-1, respectively. Also in CT-1, MCH was lower and circulating immature erythrocytes, granulocytes and plasma cells were higher in infected fi sh than in control ones at 8 weeks p.e. The histopathological effects of the monogenean on the gills of naturally infected fi sh consisted of lamellar shortening, clubbing and synechiae. The proliferation of the epithelial tissue produced fusion of secondary lamellae, and abundant chloride cells were observed. This work was supported by research grants from the Spanish Ministerio de Educación, Cultura y Deporte (project MAR-98/1000), the Spanish Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnología (project No. AGL-2002-0475-C02).Peer reviewe

Discussion in comparative aspect of the nature of geochemical fields in the mesothermal gold deposits formed in blacks and a crystal substratum is continued. The relation of near vein metasomatic and geochemical auras for a case of intervein spaces of low gold-bearing quartz veins is shown on the example of the deposit «Verkhne-Sakukanskoye» of Northern Transbaikal Region located in southwest early Proterozoic frame of the Chara ledge of the Archean base - the western fragment of the Aldan board. In the first part of the article the geological structure of the deposit, mineral structure of ores are considered. On the basis of studying of mineral composition and structure of rocks with attraction of original chemical silicate analyses and petrochemical calculations the enclosing ore containing bodies of plutonic rocks of the early Proterozoic Kodarsky complex are diagnosed as hornblende - biotite quartz diorite and quartz monzonite. In the second part of the article for the first time a mineralogical - petrochemical zonation of near vein metasomatic auras is described, their belonging to a beresite metasomatic formation, and belonging of the deposit to the gold subformation of a gold - uranium - polymetallic beresite ore formation is proved. The geochemical materials revealing distribution on near Clarke levels of contents of ore genous elements (Au, Ag, Hg, etc.) in an intervein space is given, genetic connection of near vein geochemical auras with near vein metasomatic ones in frames of mesotermal ore-forming process of late Paleozoic epoch is substantiated. The obtained results are consistent with conclusions about structure and conditions of formation of the geochemical fields, made earlier in others mesothermal gold deposits of blacks and not slate types
