    Floral structure and systematics in four orders of rosids, including a broad survey of floral mucilage cells

    Phylogenetic studies have greatly impacted upon the circumscription of taxa within the rosid clade, resulting in novel relationships at all systematic levels. In many cases the floral structure of these taxa has never been compared, and in some families, even studies of their floral structure are lacking. Over the past five years we have compared floral structure in both new and novel orders of rosids. Four orders have been investigated including Celastrales, Oxalidales, Cucurbitales and Crossosomatales, and in this paper we attempt to summarize the salient results from these studies. The clades best supported by floral structure are: in Celastrales, the enlarged Celastraceae and the sister relationship between Celastraceae and Parnassiaceae; in Oxalidales, the sister relationship between Oxalidaceae and Connaraceae, and Tremandraceae embedded in Elaeocarpaceae; in Cucurbitales, the sister relationship between Corynocarpaceae plus Coriariaceae, and the grouping of the core Cucurbitales (Cucurbitaceae, Begoniaceae, Tetramelaceae, Datiscaceae); in Crossosomatales, the sister relationship between Ixerbaceae plus Strasburgeriaceae, and between this clade and Geissolomataceae. The core Crossosomatales (Crossosomataceae, Stachyuraceae, Staphyleaceae) and Celastrales as an order are not strongly supported by floral structure. In addition, a new floral feature of potential systematic interest is assessed. Specifically the presence of special cells in flowers with a thickened mucilaginous inner cell wall and a distinct, remaining cytoplasm is surveyed in 88 families and 321 genera (349 species) of basal angiosperms and eudicots. These cells were found to be most common in rosids, particulary fabids (Malpighiales, Oxalidales, Fabales, Rosales, Fagales, Cucurbitales), but were also found in some malvids (Malvales). They are notably absent or rare in asterids (present in campanulids: Aquifoliales, Stemonuraceae) and do not appear to occur in other eudicot clades or in basal angiosperms.     First steps towards a floral structural characterization of the major rosid subclades

    A survey of our own comparative studies on several larger clades of rosids and over 1400 original publications on rosid flowers shows that floral structural features support to various degrees the supraordinal relationships in rosids proposed by molecular phylogenetic studies. However, as many apparent relationships are not yet well resolved, the structural support also remains tentative. Some of the features that turned out to be of interest in the present study had not previously been considered in earlier supraordinal studies. The strongest floral structural support is for malvids (Brassicales, Malvales, Sapindales), which reflects the strong support of phylogenetic analyses. Somewhat less structurally supported are the COM (Celastrales, Oxalidales, Malpighiales) and the nitrogen-fixing (Cucurbitales, Fagales, Fabales, Rosales) clades of fabids, which are both also only weakly supported in phylogenetic analyses. The sister pairs, Cucurbitales plus Fagales, and Malvales plus Sapindales, are structurally only weakly supported, and for the entire fabids there is no clear support by the present floral structural data. However, an additional grouping, the COM clade plus malvids, shares some interesting features but does not appear as a clade in phylogenetic analyses. Thus it appears that the deepest split within eurosids-that between fabids and malvids - in molecular phylogenetic analyses (however weakly supported) is not matched by the present structural data. Features of ovules including thickness of integuments, thickness of nucellus, and degree of ovular curvature, appear to be especially interesting for higher level relationships and should be further explored. Although features of interest are not necessarily stable at the level of a large clade, they do show a considerable concentration in particular clades and are rare or lacking in others. This may be viewed as a special trend for this feature to evolve in this group or to be conserved as a synapomorphy (or a combination of both

    Fluxon analogues and dark solitons in linearly coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

    Two effectively one-dimensional parallel coupled Bose-Einstein condensates in the presence of external potentials are studied. The system is modelled by linearly coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations. In particular, grey-soliton-like solutions representing analogues of superconducting Josephson fluxons as well as coupled dark solitons are discussed. Theoretical approximations based on variational formulations are derived. It is found that the presence of a magnetic trap can destabilize the fluxon analogues. However, stabilization is possible by controlling the effective linear coupling between the condensates.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, The paper is to appear in Journal of Physics

    The Central Laser Facility at the Pierre Auger Observatory

    The Central Laser Facility is located near the middle of the Pierre Auger Observatory in Argentina. It features a UV laser and optics that direct a beam of calibrated pulsed light into the sky. Light scattered from this beam produces tracks in the Auger optical detectors which normally record nitrogen fluorescence tracks from cosmic ray air showers. The Central Laser Facility provides a "test beam" to investigate properties of the atmosphere and the fluorescence detectors. The laser can send light via optical fiber simultaneously to the nearest surface detector tank for hybrid timing analyses.     Magnetic Field Structure around Low-Mass Class 0 Protostars: B335, L1527 and IC348-SMM2

    We report new 350 micron polarization observations of the thermal dust emission from the cores surrounding the low-mass, Class 0 YSOs L1527, IC348-SMM2 and B335. We have inferred magnetic field directions from these observations, and have used them together with results in the literature to determine whether magnetically regulated core-collapse and star-formation models are consistent with the observations. These models predict a pseudo-disk with its symmetry axis aligned with the core magnetic field. The models also predict a magnetic field pinch structure on a scale less than or comparable to the infall radii for these sources. In addition, if the core magnetic field aligns (or nearly aligns) the core rotation axis with the magnetic field before core collapse, then the models predict the alignment (or near alignment) of the overall pinch field structure with the bipolar outflows in these sources. We show that if one includes the distorting effects of bipolar outflows on magnetic fields, then in general the observational results for L1527 and IC348-SMM2 are consistent with these magnetically regulated models. We can say the same for B335 only if we assume the distorting effects of the bipolar outflow on the magnetic fields within the B335 core are much greater than for L1527 and IC348-SMM2. We show that the energy densities of the outflows in all three sources are large enough to distort the magnetic fields predicted by magnetically regulated models.Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journa

    Pattern formation with a conservation law

    Pattern formation in systems with a conserved quantity is considered by studying the appropriate amplitude equations. The conservation law leads to a large-scale neutral mode that must be included in the asymptotic analysis for pattern formation near onset. Near a stationary bifurcation, the usual Ginzburg--Landau equation for the amplitude of the pattern is then coupled to an equation for the large-scale mode. These amplitude equations show that for certain parameters all roll-type solutions are unstable. This new instability differs from the Eckhaus instability in that it is amplitude-driven and is supercritical. Beyond the stability boundary, there exist stable stationary solutions in the form of strongly modulated patterns. The envelope of these modulations is calculated in terms of Jacobi elliptic functions and, away from the onset of modulation, is closely approximated by a sech profile. Numerical simulations indicate that as the modulation becomes more pronounced, the envelope broadens. A number of applications are considered, including convection with fixed-flux boundaries and convection in a magnetic field, resulting in new instabilities for these systems

    High temperature onset of field-induced transitions in the spin-ice compound Dy2Ti2O7

    We have studied the field-dependent ac magnetic susceptibility of single crystals of Dy2Ti2O7 spin ice along the [111] direction in the temperature range 1.8 K - 7 K. Our data reflect the onset of local spin ice order in the appearance of different field regimes. In particular, we observe a prominent feature at approximately 1.0 T that is a precursor of the low-temperature metamagnetic transition out of field-induced kagome ice, below which the kinetic constraints imposed by the ice rules manifest themselves in a substantial frequency-dependence of the susceptibility. Despite the relatively high temperatures, our results are consistent with a monopole picture, and they demonstrate that such a picture can give physical insight to the spin ice systems even outside the low-temperature, low-density limit where monopole excitations are well-defined quasiparticles

    High power operation of an X-band gyrotwistron

    We report the first experimental verification of a gyrotwistron amplifier. The device utilized a single 9.858 GHz, TE011 cavity, a heavily attenuated drift tube, and a long tapered output waveguide section. With a 440 kV, 200-245 A, 1 ÎĽs electron beam and a sharply tapered axial magnetic field, peak powers above 21 MW were achieved with a gain near 24 dB. Performance was limited by competition from a fundamental TE11 mode. A multimode code was developed to analyze this system, and simulations were in good agreement with the experiment
