The Outbursts and Orbit of the Accreting Pulsar GS 1843-02 = 2S 1845-024
We present observations of a series of 10 outbursts of pulsed hard X-ray flux
from the transient 10.6 mHz accreting pulsar GS 1843-02, using the Burst and
Transient Source Experiment on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory. These
outbursts occurred regularly every 242 days, coincident with the ephemeris of
the periodic transient GRO J1849-03 (Zhang et al. 1996), which has recently
been identified with the SAS 3 source 2S 1845-024 (Soffitta et al. 1998). Our
pulsed detection provides the first clear identification of GS 1843-02 with 2S
1845-024. We present a pulse timing analysis which shows that the 2S 1845-024
outbursts occur near the periastron passage of the neutron star's highly
eccentric (e = 0.88+-0.01) 242.18+-0.01 day period binary orbit about a high
mass (M > 7 solar masses) companion. The orbit and transient outburst pattern
strongly suggest the pulsar is in a binary system with a Be star. Our
observations show a long-term spin-up trend, with most of the spin-up occurring
during the outbursts. From the measured spin-up rates and inferred luminosities
we conclude that an accretion disk is present during the outbursts.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journa

RXTE Observations of the Anomalous Pulsar 4U 0142+61
We observed the anomalous X-ray pulsar 4U 0142+61 using the Proportional
Counter Array (PCA) aboard the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) in March
1996. The pulse frequency was measured as f = 0.11510039(3) Hz with an upper
limit of df/dt < 4 * 10^(-13) Hz/s upon the short term change in frequency over
the 4.6 day span of the observations. A compilation of all historical
measurements showed an overall spin-down trend with slope df/dt = (-3.0 +/-
0.1) * 10^(-14) Hz/s. Searches for orbital modulations in pulse arrival times
yielded an upper limit of a_x sin i < 0.26 lt-s (99% confidence) for the period
range 70 s to 2.5 days. These limits combined with previous optical limits and
evolutionary arguments suggest that 4U 0142+61 is probably not a member of a

X-ray Flux Related Timing and Spectral Features of 2S 1417-62
RXTE observations of the X-ray transient pulsar 2S 1417-62 between 1999
November and 2000 August with a total exposure of ksec were
analyzed. Observations include a main outburst followed by a series of mini
outbursts. Changes in pulse morphology and pulse fraction were found to be
related to the changes in X-ray flux. Particularly low X-ray flux regions were
found to have significantly lower pulse fractions with different pulse
morphologies. The 3-60 keV PCA-HEXTE main outburst spectrum was modeled with an
absorbed power law model with high energy cut-off and a Gaussian Iron line
complex feature. Using the same spectral model, individual 3-20 keV PCA spectra
were found to be softer and less absorbed in low X-ray flux regions between
outbursts. Spectral studies showed that hydrogen column density was correlated,
and the power law index was anti-correlated with the 3-20 keV X-ray flux. X-ray
flux related spectral and timing features in 2S 1417-62 except for low X-ray
flux regions were interpreted as a sign of disc accretion with a similar
accretion geometry with a varying mass accretion rate (), whereas
spectral and timing features of the low X-ray flux regions were interpreted as
a sign of possible temporary accretion geometry change prior to the next
periastron where increases again to restore the original accretion

Adult-Onset Leukoencephalopathy With Axonal Spheroids and Pigmented Glia: Review of Clinical Manifestations as Foundations for Therapeutic Development
A comprehensive review of published literature was conducted to elucidate the genetics, neuropathology, imaging findings, prevalence, clinical course, diagnosis/clinical evaluation, potential biomarkers, and current and proposed treatments for adult-onset leukoencephalopathy with axonal spheroids and pigmented glia (ALSP), a rare, debilitating, and life-threatening neurodegenerative disorder for which disease-modifying therapies are not currently available. Details on potential efficacy endpoints for future interventional clinical trials in patients with ALSP and data related to the burden of the disease on patients and caregivers were also reviewed. The information in this position paper lays a foundation to establish an effective clinical rationale and address the clinical gaps for creation of a robust strategy to develop therapeutic agents for ALSP, as well as design future clinical trials, that have clinically meaningful and convergent endpoints
The environmental security debate and its significance for climate change
Policymakers, military strategists and academics all increasingly hail climate change as a security issue. This article revisits the (comparatively) long-standing “environmental security debate” and asks what lessons that earlier debate holds for the push towards making climate change a security issue. Two important claims are made. First, the emerging climate security debate is in many ways a re-run of the earlier dispute. It features many of the same proponents and many of the same disagreements. These disagreements concern, amongst other things, the nature of the threat, the referent object of security and the appropriate policy responses. Second, given its many different interpretations, from an environmentalist perspective, securitisation of the climate is not necessarily a positive development
Forward Genetic Analysis of Visual Behavior in Zebrafish
The visual system converts the distribution and wavelengths of photons entering the eye into patterns of neuronal activity, which then drive motor and endocrine behavioral responses. The gene products important for visual processing by a living and behaving vertebrate animal have not been identified in an unbiased fashion. Likewise, the genes that affect development of the nervous system to shape visual function later in life are largely unknown. Here we have set out to close this gap in our understanding by using a forward genetic approach in zebrafish. Moving stimuli evoke two innate reflexes in zebrafish larvae, the optomotor and the optokinetic response, providing two rapid and quantitative tests to assess visual function in wild-type (WT) and mutant animals. These behavioral assays were used in a high-throughput screen, encompassing over half a million fish. In almost 2,000 F2 families mutagenized with ethylnitrosourea, we discovered 53 recessive mutations in 41 genes. These new mutations have generated a broad spectrum of phenotypes, which vary in specificity and severity, but can be placed into only a handful of classes. Developmental phenotypes include complete absence or abnormal morphogenesis of photoreceptors, and deficits in ganglion cell differentiation or axon targeting. Other mutations evidently leave neuronal circuits intact, but disrupt phototransduction, light adaptation, or behavior-specific responses. Almost all of the mutants are morphologically indistinguishable from WT, and many survive to adulthood. Genetic linkage mapping and initial molecular analyses show that our approach was effective in identifying genes with functions specific to the visual system. This collection of zebrafish behavioral mutants provides a novel resource for the study of normal vision and its genetic disorders
Step-Wise Loss of Bacterial Flagellar Torsion Confers Progressive Phagocytic Evasion
Phagocytosis of bacteria by innate immune cells is a primary method of bacterial clearance during infection. However, the mechanisms by which the host cell recognizes bacteria and consequentially initiates phagocytosis are largely unclear. Previous studies of the bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa have indicated that bacterial flagella and flagellar motility play an important role in colonization of the host and, importantly, that loss of flagellar motility enables phagocytic evasion. Here we use molecular, cellular, and genetic methods to provide the first formal evidence that phagocytic cells recognize bacterial motility rather than flagella and initiate phagocytosis in response to this motility. We demonstrate that deletion of genes coding for the flagellar stator complex, which results in non-swimming bacteria that retain an initial flagellar structure, confers resistance to phagocytic binding and ingestion in several species of the gamma proteobacterial group of Gram-negative bacteria, indicative of a shared strategy for phagocytic evasion. Furthermore, we show for the first time that susceptibility to phagocytosis in swimming bacteria is proportional to mot gene function and, consequently, flagellar rotation since complementary genetically- and biochemically-modulated incremental decreases in flagellar motility result in corresponding and proportional phagocytic evasion. These findings identify that phagocytic cells respond to flagellar movement, which represents a novel mechanism for non-opsonized phagocytic recognition of pathogenic bacteria
Observations of Accreting Pulsars
We summarize five years of continuous monitoring of accretion-powered pulsars
with the Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) on the Compton Gamma Ray
Observatory. Our 20-70 keV observations have determined or refined the orbital
parameters of 13 binaries, discovered 5 new transient accreting pulsars,
measured the pulsed flux history during outbursts of 12 transients (GRO
J1744-28, 4U 0115+634, GRO J1750-27, GS 0834-430, 2S 1417-624, GRO J1948+32,
EXO 2030+375, GRO J1008-57, A 0535+26, GRO J2058+42, 4U 1145-619 and A
1118-616), and also measured the accretion torque history of during outbursts
of 6 of those transients whose orbital parameters were also known. We have also
continuously measured the pulsed flux and spin frequency for eight persistently
accreting pulsars (Her X-1, Cen X-3, Vela X-1, OAO 1657-415, GX 301-2, 4U
1626-67, 4U 1538-52, and GX 1+4). Because of their continuity and uniformity
over a long baseline, BATSE observations have provided new insights into the
long-term behavior of accreting magnetic stars. We have found that all
accreting pulsars show stochastic variations in their spin frequencies and
luminosities, including those displaying secular spin-up or spin-down on long
time scales, blurring the conventional distinction between disk-fed and
wind-fed binaries. Pulsed flux and accretion torque are strongly correlated in
outbursts of transient accreting pulsars, but uncorrelated, or even

Data compatibility in the addiction sciences: An examination of measure commonality
The need for comprehensive analysis to compare and combine data across multiple studies in order to validate and extend results is widely recognized. This paper aims to assess the extent of data compatibility in the substance abuse and addiction (SAA) sciences through an examination of measure commonality, defined as the use of similar measures, across grants funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA). Data were extracted from applications of funded, active grants involving human-subjects research in four scientific areas (epidemiology, prevention, services, and treatment) and six frequently assessed scientific domains. A total of 548 distinct measures were cited across 141 randomly sampled applications. Commonality, as assessed by density (range of 0–1) of shared measurement, was examined. Results showed that commonality was low and varied by domain/area. Commonality was most prominent for (1) diagnostic interviews (structured and semi-structured) for substance use disorders and psychopathology (density of 0.88), followed by (2) scales to assess dimensions of substance use problems and disorders (0.70), (3) scales to assess dimensions of affect and psychopathology (0.69), (4) measures of substance use quantity and frequency (0.62), (5) measures of personality traits (0.40), and (6) assessments of cognitive/neurologic ability (0.22). The areas of prevention (density of 0.41) and treatment (0.42) had greater commonality than epidemiology (0.36) and services (0.32). To address the lack of measure commonality, NIDA and its scientific partners recommend and provide common measures for SAA researchers within the PhenX Toolkit
