    Crop Insurance Purchase Decisions: A Study of Northern Illinois Farmers

The importance associated with factors that are considered when making crop insurance decisions varies among individual farmers. As available crop insurance options increase, selecting the appropriate coverage becomes a more complicated process. The prevalence of crop insurance participation and the existence of multiple selection criteria also makes understanding participant decisions more difficult. This paper provides findings of a mail survey conducted among farmers in northern Illinois.     Device independent quantum key distribution secure against coherent attacks with memoryless measurement devices

    Device independent quantum key distribution aims to provide a higher degree of security than traditional QKD schemes by reducing the number of assumptions that need to be made about the physical devices used. The previous proof of security by Pironio et al. applies only to collective attacks where the state is identical and independent and the measurement devices operate identically for each trial in the protocol. We extend this result to a more general class of attacks where the state is arbitrary and the measurement devices have no memory. We accomplish this by a reduction of arbitrary adversary strategies to qubit strategies and a proof of security for qubit strategies based on the previous proof by Pironio et al. and techniques adapted from Renner.Comment: 13 pages.     Sedimentological characterization of Antarctic moraines using UAVs and Structure-from-Motion photogrammetry

    In glacial environments particle-size analysis of moraines provides insights into clast origin, transport history, depositional mechanism and processes of reworking. Traditional methods for grain-size classification are labour-intensive, physically intrusive and are limited to patch-scale (1m2) observation. We develop emerging, high-resolution ground- and unmanned aerial vehicle-based ‘Structure-from-Motion’ (UAV-SfM) photogrammetry to recover grain-size information across an moraine surface in the Heritage Range, Antarctica. SfM data products were benchmarked against equivalent datasets acquired using terrestrial laser scanning, and were found to be accurate to within 1.7 and 50mm for patch- and site-scale modelling, respectively. Grain-size distributions were obtained through digital grain classification, or ‘photo-sieving’, of patch-scale SfM orthoimagery. Photo-sieved distributions were accurate to <2mm compared to control distributions derived from dry sieving. A relationship between patch-scale median grain size and the standard deviation of local surface elevations was applied to a site-scale UAV-SfM model to facilitate upscaling and the production of a spatially continuous map of the median grain size across a 0.3 km2 area of moraine. This highly automated workflow for site scale sedimentological characterization eliminates much of the subjectivity associated with traditional methods and forms a sound basis for subsequent glaciological process interpretation and analysis

    SAXS reveals highly flexible interdomain linkers of tandem acyl carrier protein–thioesterase domains from a fungal non‐reducing polyketide synthase

    Menisporopsin A is a fungal bioactive macrocyclic polylactone requiring only reducing (R) and non-reducing (NR) polyketide synthases (PKSs) to guide a series of esterification and cyclolactonization reactions with no structural information pertaining to these PKSs. Here we report the solution characterization of singlet and doublet acyl carrier protein (ACP2 and ACP1-ACP2)-thioesterase (TE) domains from NR-PKS, involved in menisporopsin A biosynthesis. Small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) studies in combination with homology modelling reveal that these polypeptides adopt a distinctive Beads-on-aString configuration, characterized by the presence of highly flexible interdomain linkers. These models provide a platform for studying domain organization and interdomain interactions in fungal NR-PKSs, which may be of value in directing the design of functionally optimised polyketide scaffolds

    Blue-ice moraines formation in the Heritage Range, West Antarctica: implications for ice sheet history and climate reconstruction

    Blue ice is found in areas of Antarctica where katabatic winds, focussed by steep surface slopes or by topography around nunataks, cause enhanced surface ablation. This process draws up deeper, older ice to the ice sheet surface, often bringing with it englacial sediment. Prevailing theories for dynamically stable moraine surfaces in East Antarctica suggest that: (i) it is this material, once concentrated, that forms blue-ice moraines (BIM), (ii) that the moraine formation can be dated using cosmogenic isotope approaches, and that, (iii) since we expect an increase in exposure age moving away from the ice margin towards bedrock, dating across the moraine can be used to constrain ice-sheet history. To test this lateral accretion model for BIM formation we visited Patriot, Marble and Independence Hills in the southern Heritage Range, West Antarctica. Detailed field surveys of surface form, sediment and moraine dynamics were combined with geophysical surveys of the englacial structure of the moraines and cosmogenic nuclide analysis of surface clasts. Results suggest sediment is supplied mainly by basal entrainment, supplemented by debris-covered valley glaciers transferring material onto the ice sheet surface, direct deposition from rock-fall and slope processes from nunataks. We find that once sediment coalesces in BIM, significant reworking occurs through differential ablation, slope and periglacial processes. We bring these processes together in a conceptual model, concluding that many BIM in West Antarctica are dynamic and, whilst they persist through glacial cycles, they do not always neatly record ice sheet retreat patterns since linear distance from the ice margin does not always relate to increased clast exposure age. Understanding the dynamic processes involved in moraine formation is critical to the effective interpretation of the typically large scatter of cosmogenic nuclide exposure ages, opening a deep window into the million-year history of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet

    Hubble-COS Observations of Galactic High-Velocity Clouds: Four AGN Sight Lines through Complex C

    We report ultraviolet spectra of Galactic high-velocity clouds (HVCs) in Complex C, taken by the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), together with new 21-cm spectra from the Green Bank Telescope. The wide spectral coverage and higher S/N, compared to previous HST spectra, provide better velocity definition of the HVC absorption, additional ionization species, and improved abundances in this halo gas. Complex C has a metallicity of 0.1-0.3 solar and a wide range of ions, suggesting dynamical and thermal interactions with hot gas in the Galactic halo. Spectra in the COS medium-resolution G130M (1133-1468 A) and G160M (1383-1796 A) gratings detect ultraviolet absorption lines from 8 elements in low ionization stages (O I, N I, C II, S II, Si II, Al II, Fe II, P II) and 3 elements in intermediate and high-ionization states (Si III, Si IV, C IV, N V). Our four AGN sight lines toward Mrk 817, Mrk 290, Mrk 876, and PG1259+593 have high-velocity H I and O VI column densities, log N_HI = 19.39-20.05 and log N_OVI = 13.58-14.10, with substantial amounts of kinematically associated photoionized gas. The high-ion abundance ratios are consistent with cooling interfaces between photoionized gas and collisionally ionized gas: N(C IV)/N(O VI) = 0.3-0.5, N(Si IV)/N(O VI) = 0.05-0.11, N(N V)/N(O VI) = 0.07-0.13, and N(Si IV)/N(Si III) = 0.2.Comment: 43 pages, 11 figures (appearing in ApJ, Sept 1, 2011

    Modular Design of a Passive, Low-Cost Prosthetic Knee Mechanism to Enable Able-Bodied Kinematics for Users With Transfemoral Amputation

    There is a significant need for low-cost, high-performance prosthetic knee technology for transfemoral amputees in India. Replicating able-bodied gait in amputees is biomechanically necessary to reduce the metabolic cost, and it is equally important to mitigate the socio-economic discrimination faced by amputees in developing countries due to their conspicuous gait deviations. This paper improves upon a previous study of a fully passive knee mechanism, addressing the issues identified in its user testing in India. This paper presents the design, analysis and bench-level testing of the three major functional modules of the new prosthetic knee architecture: (i) a four-bar latch mechanism for achieving stability during stance phase of walking, (ii) an early stance flexion module designed by implementing a fully adjustable mechanism, and (iii) a hydraulic rotary damping system for achieving smooth and reliable swing-phase control
