Mali versus an proba oratio? (epigrafia latina su instrumentum e carmina epigraphica)

Get PDF
In the very rare Latin inscriptions on instrumentum developed into a full sentence, there is no reason for seeking at any rate the traces of mali versus, that is of an awkward attempt of metric composition (with the aim at setting them in the collections of CLE), while they show actually the ordinary feature of a proba oratio, sometimes embellished with valuable figures of speech. Otherwise, if an actual metric or rhythmical feature is recognizable, they are usually quotations from an individual poet, or of probable versus populares, or of phrases and proverbs in current use.

A free-trajectory quasi-steady-state optimal-control method for minimum lap-time of race vehicles

Get PDF
Minimum lap time problems are usually solved employing quasi-steady-state models on a pre- determined (fixed) trajectory or employing dynamic models on a free (i.e. not predetermined) trajectory. This work describes a third approach, where the minimum-lap-time problem is solved using quasi-steady-state models and free trajectory. The method builds upon g-g maps that can either be derived numerically or experimentally. Such g-g-speed surfaces can either represent the performance of a car or a motorcycle. Both a double-track car model and a motorcycle model are employed as examples of applications. The effect of the free-trajectory vs. fixed-trajectory assumption is also discussed

The effect of engine spin direction on the dynamics of powered two wheelers

Get PDF
The effect of engine spin direction on the dynamics of powered two wheelers is investigated in terms of steady-state points (equilibria), vibration modes (stability), manoeuvre time (performance/manoeuvrability) and handling. The goal is to assess and quantify the advantage sometimes claimed for the ‘counter-rotating’ engine configuration, where the engine spins in the opposite direction with respect to wheels, against the ‘conventional’ configuration, where the engine spins in the same direction of wheels

A prospective evaluation on external jugular vein cut-down approach for TIVAD implantation

Get PDF
BACKGROUND: Totally implantable venous access devices can be implanted both by percutaneous approaches and by surgical approaches with cephalic vein or external jugular vein cut-down techniques that are related to low intraoperative complication rates. The authors report a prospective evaluation of 83 consecutive external jugular vein cut-down approaches for totally implantable venous access devices implantation. METHODS: Eighty three consecutive patients (28 M, 55 F, mean age 54.2) suffering from solid tumors (58) or hematologic diseases (25) were consecutively submitted to totally implantable venous access devices insertion through external jugular vein cut-down approach (75 on right side, 8 on left side). RESULTS: All devices were surgically implanted; no instances of intraoperative complications were detected. After a minimum follow-up of 150 days, only one case of wound hematoma and one case of device malfunction due to incorrect catheter angulation were noted. Postoperative patient satisfaction was evaluated by the use of specific questionnaire that demonstrated a good satisfaction and compliance (92.8 %) of patients with implanted devices. CONCLUSIONS: Despite the lack of controlled studies comparing external jugular vein cut-down approach vs other approaches, this approach should be considered as a tool for long-term central vein catheters positioning, both as an alternative and for primary approach

Comparison of direct and indirect methods for minimum lap time optimal control problems

Get PDF
Minimum lap time simulations are especially important in the design, optimisation and setup of race vehicles. Such problems usually come in different flavours, e.g. quasi-steady state models vs full dynamic models and pre-defined (fixed) trajectory problems vs free trajectory problems. This work is focused on full dynamic models with free trajectory. Practical solution techniques include direct methods (i.e. solution of an NLP problem, widespread approach) and indirect method (i.e. based on Pontryagins principle, less common, yet quite efficient in some cases). In this contribution the performance of the direct and indirect methods are compared in a number of vehicle related problems

Calculative practices, social movements and the rise of collective identity: how #istayathome mobilised a nation

Get PDF
Purpose – The Italian government addressed the first wave of its COVID-19 outbreak with a series of social restrictions and calculative practices, all branded with the slogan #istayathome. The hashtag quickly went viral, becoming both a mandate and a mantra and, as the crisis played out, we witnessed the rise of the Italian social movement #istayathome. This study examines how the government’s calculative practices led to #istayathome and the constituents that shaped this social movement. Design/methodology/approach – The authors embrace social movement theory and the collective identity perspective to examine #istayathome as a collective action and social movement. Using passive netnography, text mining and interpretative text analysis enhanced by machine learning, the authors analysed just over 350,000 tweets made during the period March to May 2020, each brandishing the hashtag #istayathome. Findings – The #istayathome movement gained traction as a response to the Italian government’s call for collective action. Thus, people became an active part of mobilising collective responsibility, enhancing the government’s plans. A collective identity on the part of the Italian people sustained the mass mobilisation, driven by cohesion, solidarity and a deep cultural trauma from COVID-19’s dramatic effects. Popular culture and Italy’s long traditions also helped to form the collective identity of #istayathome. This study found that calculative practices acted as a persuasive technology in forming this collective identity and mobilising people’s collective action. Numbers stimulated the cognitive, moral and emotional connections of the social ties shaping collective identity and responsibility. Thus, through collective identity, calculative practices indirectly influenced mass social behaviors and the social movement. Originality/value – This study offers a novel theoretical perspective and empirical knowledge to explain how government power affects people’s culture and everyday life. It unveils the sociological drivers that mobilise collective behaviors and enriches the accounting literature on the effects of calculative practices in managing emergencies. The study contributes to theory by providing an understanding of how calculative practices can influence collective behaviors and can be used to construct informal networks that go beyond the government’s traditional formalities
