    The production of string charge during a crossing of certain oriented D-branes is studied. We compute the string charge in the system of a probe D2-brane and a background D6-brane by use of the equations of motion in the ten-dimensions.     Diagnosis of a unit-wide disturbance caused by saturation in a manipulated variable

    It is well known that faulty control valves with friction in the moving parts lead to limit cycle oscillations which can propagate to other parts of the plant. However, a control loop with healthy valve can also undergo oscillatory behavior. The root cause of a unit-wide oscillation in a distillation column was traced to a pressure control loop in a case study at Mitsui Chemicals. The diagnosis was made by means of a new technique of pattern matching of the time-resolved frequency spectrum using a wavelet analysis tool. The method identified key characteristics shared by measurements at various places in the column and quantified the similarities. Non-linearity was detected in the time trend of the pressure measurement, a result which initially suggested the root cause was a faulty actuator or sensor. Further analysis showed, however, that the source of non-linearlity was periodic saturation of the manipulated variable caused by slack tuning. The problem was remidied by changing the controller tuning settings and the unit-wide disturbance then went away

    Quantum Nernst effect in a bismuth single crystal

    We report a theoretical calculation explaining the quantum Nernst effect observed experimentally in a bismuth single crystal. Generalizing the edge-current picture in two dimensions, we show that the peaks of the Nernst coefficient survive in three dimensions due to a van Hove singularity. We also evaluate the phonon-drag effect on the Nernst coefficient numerically.     Factoring out the parallelism effect in ellipsis: An interactional approach?

    Traditionally, there have been three standard assumptions made about the Parallelism Effect on VP-ellipsis, namely that the effect is categorical, that it applies asymmetrically and that it is uniquely due to syntactic factors. Based on the results of a series of experiments involving online and offline tasks, it will be argued that the Parallelism Effect is instead noncategorical and interactional. The factors investigated include construction type, conceptual and morpho-syntactic recoverability, finiteness and anaphor type (to test VP-anaphora). The results show that parallelism is gradient rather than categorical, effects both VP-ellipsis and anaphora, and is influenced by both structural and non-structural factors

    This paper presents results from a new set of experiments using the sentence matching paradigm (Forster, Kenneth (1979), Freedman & Forster (1985), also Bley-Vroman & Masterson (1989), investigating native-speakers’ and L2 learners’ knowledge of constraints on clitic placement in French.1 Our purpose is three-fold: (i) to shed more light on the contrasts between native-speakers and L2 learners observed in previous experiments, especially Duffield & White (1999), and Duffield, White, Bruhn de Garavito, Montrul & Prévost (2002); (ii), to address specific criticisms of the sentence-matching paradigm leveled by Gass (2001); (iii), to provide a firm empirical basis for follow-up experiments with L2 learner

    Microscopic approach to large-amplitude deformation dynamics with local QRPA inertial masses

    We have developed a new method for determining microscopically the fivedimensional quadrupole collective Hamiltonian, on the basis of the adiabatic self-consistent collective coordinate method. This method consists of the constrained Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) equation and the local QRPA (LQRPA) equations, which are an extension of the usual QRPA (quasiparticle random phase approximation) to non-HFB-equilibrium points, on top of the CHFB states. One of the advantages of our method is that the inertial functions calculated with this method contain the contributions of the time-odd components of the mean field, which are ignored in the widely-used cranking formula. We illustrate usefulness of our method by applying to oblate-prolate shape coexistence in 72Kr and shape phase transition in neutron-rich Cr isotopes around N=40.Comment: 6pages, talk given at Rutherford Centennial Conference on Nuclear Physics, 8 - 12 August 2011, The University of Mancheste

    Fluctuation properties of strength function associated with the giant quadrupole resonance in 208Pb

    We performed fluctuation analysis by means of the local scaling dimension for the strength function of the isoscalar (IS) giant quadrupole resonance (GQR) in 208Pb where the strength function is obtained by the shell model calculation including 1p1h and 2p2h configurations. It is found that at almost all energy scales, fluctuation of the strength function obeys the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble (GOE) random matrix theory limit. This is contrasted with the results for the GQR in 40Ca, where at the intermediate energy scale about 1.7 MeV a deviation from the GOE limit was detected. It is found that the physical origin for this different behavior of the local scaling dimension is ascribed to the difference in the properties of the damping process.Comment: 10 pages, 14 figures, submitted to Physical Review
