    Development and Validation of the Japanese Moral Foundations Dictionary

    The Moral Foundations Dictionary (MFD) is a useful tool for applying the conceptual framework developed in Moral Foundations Theory and quantifying the moral meanings implicated in the linguistic information people convey. However, the applicability of the MFD is limited because it is available only in English. Translated versions of the MFD are therefore needed to study morality across various cultures, including non-Western cultures. The contribution of this paper is two-fold. We developed the first Japanese version of the MFD (referred to as the J-MFD) by introducing a semi-automated method---this serves as a reference when translating the MFD into other languages. We next tested the validity of the J-MFD by analyzing open-ended written texts about the situations that Japanese participants thought followed and violated the five moral foundations. We found that the J-MFD correctly categorized the Japanese participants' descriptions into the corresponding moral foundations, and that the Moral Foundations Questionnaire (MFQ) scores were correlated with the frequency of situations, of total words, and of J-MFD words in the participants' descriptions for the Harm and Fairness foundations.     Body sway increases immediately after strabismus surgery.

    The purposes of this study were to examine whether body sway is altered immediately after strabismus surgery in children and to find preoperative clinical factors associated with body sway. In a prospective study, body sway was measured on 1-3 days before surgery and on the third day after surgery; for the measurements, computerized static stabilometry was carried out on 28 consecutive patients with strabismus (age range: 3 to 12 years old; mean: 7.4) who underwent strabismus surgery under general anesthesia. The linear length of the sway path (cm), the linear length of the sway path in a particular unit of time (cm/second), and the area of the sway path (cm2), indicative of the extent of body sway, all increased significantly among a total of 28 patients in both conditions of the patient's eyes open and closed, as well as among those in a subgroup of 16 patients with exotropia, after they had undergone strabismus surgery (p &#60; 0.05, Wilcoxon signed ranks test). The center of pressure along the Y axis of orientation from the toe to the heel was found to deviate significantly toward the heel postoperatively, as compared with the preoperative center in the subgroup of 16 patients with exotropia (p &#60; 0.05). Before surgery, 15 patients with no stereoacuity exhibited a greater amount of body sway when their eyes were open than did 13 patients with measurable stereoacuity (p &#60; 0.05, Mann-Whitney U-test). In the subgroup of 16 patients with exotropia when their eyes open, 3 patients with abnormal head posture exhibited more extensive body sway than did 13 patients without abnormal head posture (p &#60; 0.05). Body sway was found to significantly increase immediately after strabismus surgery in children with strabismus. Stereoacuity and abnormal head posture are 2 clinical factors associated with preoperative postural instability.</p

    Visualization of the non-steady state oblique detonation wave phenomena around hypersonic spherical projectile

    We studied experimentally the shock waves and combustion waves generated by a hypersonic spherical projectile in an explosive mixture. An acetylene/oxygen mixture diluted with argon (2C2H2 + 5O2 + 7Ar) was used with various initial pressures (detonation cell sizes) to observe optically with a shadowgraph imaging system a shock-induced combustion (SIC), a stable oblique detonation wave (ODW), and a wave called a Straw Hat type consisting of a strong SIC and ODW. The criticality of stabilizing an ODW around a projectile is expressed by the ratio of the projectile diameter, d, to the cell size, λ, as d/λ = 3.63–4.84. Although the Straw Hat type wave in the vicinity of criticality is an unstable phenomena, it has been mainly observed by a single frame picture to date, so that it is difficult to discuss the time history of its wave structure. In this study, it was remarkable to directly carry out continuous optical observations using a high speed video camera which can continuously film 100 pictures with a 1 μs frame speed so as to allow an investigation of the sustaining mechanism of the unstable wave structure. Our results allowed the identification of an increase in unsteadiness in the relative distance between the projectile fronts and the transition points to an ODW as the time increased. They also showed local explosions in the SIC region near transition point transformed the ODW front upstream

    AbstractA 51-year-old man complained of oral roughness and pain. At the age of 49 years, he was admitted for 8 months for bipolar emotional disorder. Oral administration of lithium carbonate was started. Extensive, hemorrhagic, erythema-mixed white lace-like patches were noted on the lip, buccal mucosae, and lingual margins. On biopsy, all lesions were consistent with oral lichen planus. A drug lymphocyte stimulation test showed a positive reaction to lithium carbonate. Blood examination revealed marked increases in the peripheral blood levels of antinuclear antibodies. To relieve the symptoms, the systemic administration of prednisolone was performed while continuing the lithium carbonate

    Thrust Measurement of a Multicycle Partially Filled Pulse Detonation Rocket Engine

    In the present research, we experimentally verified the partial-fill effect in a multicycle pulse detonation rocketengine. The intermittent thrust of a pulse detonation rocket engine was measured by using a spring-dampermechanism that smoothed this intermittent thrust in the time direction. The intermittent mass flow rates wereassessed by gas cylinder pressure or mass difference measurement. The maximum specific impulse was 305 9 s atan ethylene and oxygen propellant fill fraction of 0:130 0:004. When the fill fraction was greater than 0.130, thespecific impulse was increased as the partial-fill fraction was decreased. When the fill fraction was less than 0.130, thespecific impulse was sharply decreased as the partial-fill fraction was decreased. This decrease was due to diffusionbetween propellant and purge gases and the short length of the transition from deflagration to detonation. Themulticycle pulse detonation rocket engine had a partial-fill effect that may have been mainly due to the suctioned airand was consistent with the single-cycle partial-fill model of Endo et al

    Effects of Activity Participation of the Elderly on Quality of Life

    Quality of life (QOL) and personality were examined in 2 groups of elderly subjects with and without activity participation (AP). A survey was conducted with 321 elderly subjects over 65 years of age using a 24-item questionnaire regarding personality and depressive inclination and the visual analogue scale-happiness to measure QOL. The AP group was involved in 5 types of activity: community center activity course, learning and lecture participation, club activity, elderly manpower service activity and other activities. The QOL of the AP group was significantly higher than the non-AP group as expected. The perceptual difference between the 2 groups obtained by the correspondence and cluster analyses was that although the elderly of the AP group were satisfied and not bored with their current life, this trend was not clear for the non-AP group. Among the 5 activity types, other activities, characterized as activities adhered to by participants over a long period, showed the highest QOL compared with the 4 other types. In conclusion, the AP of the elderly should be encouraged, and continuing AP might be an important factor in improving QOL of the elderly

    Supersonic Combustion Using a Stinger-Shaped Fuel Injector

    We developed a stinger-shaped injector (stinger injector) for supersonic combustors in cold-flow experiments. The stinger injector has a port geometry with a sharp leading edge in front of a streamwise slit. This injector produced higher jet penetration at a lower jet-tocrossflow momentum flux ratio (J) than a conventional circular injector. We applied the injector in a Mach 2.44 combustion test at a stagnation temperature of 2060 K. At a low fuel equivalence ratio (Φ) regime (i.e., low J regime), the injector produced 10% higher pressure thrust than the circular injector because of high jet penetration as expected from the coldflow experiments. Even at a moderate Φ regime, the stinger injector produced higher pressure thrust than the circular injector. At moderate Φ, the stinger injector held the flame around the injector and generated a precombustion shock wave in front of the injector. The presence of the precombustion shock wave decreased the momentum flux of the crossflow air and diminished the advantage of the injector for jet penetration. The injector, however, produced higher pressure thrust because better flame-holding produced higher pressure around the injector. At a higher Φ regime, the precombustion shock wave went upstream with both injectors. The far-upstream presence of a precombustion shock wave increased the turbulence in the crossflow and spread the fuel from both injectors.     Knowledge of Criteria for Brain Death and Attitudes towards Organ Donation and Transplantation of Nursing Professionals in Tottori Prefecture, Japan

    The nursing professional population in Tottori Prefecture, Japan, was studied for their knowledge of criteria towards brain death and their attitudes towards organ donation and organ transplantation. An attempt was also made to clarify factors involved in issues concerning organ donation and organ transplantation. We distributed 2200 questionnaires to 9 hospitals, and obtained 1879 responses, of which 1683 were valid. The rate of nursing professionals holding donor cards to all respondents was 384/1683 (22.8%). The length of nursing service showed no difference in improvement of awareness of brain death. Longer length of service tended to produce a negative attitude in nurses towards donating their own organs in both brain death and cardiac death. Subjects who were willing to donate organs to others in cardiac death were also willing to do so in brain death. We provided some general suggestions for improving education about organ transplantation in Japan, such as commencing provisions for education regarding organ donation and organ transplantation in junior high school due to ethical issues. To more clearly identify the barriers against the improvement of the situation surrounding organ transplantation, research needs to be cumulated for nursing professionals
