    First results from the VIMOS-IFU survey of gravitationally lensing clusters at z~0.2

    We present the on-going observational program of a VIMOS Integral Field Unit survey of the central regions of massive, gravitational lensing galaxy clusters at redshift z~0.2. We have observed six clusters using the low-resolution blue grism (R about 200), and the spectroscopic survey is complemented by a wealth of photometric data, including Hubble Space Telescope optical data and near infrared VLT data. The principal scientific aims of this project are: the study of the high-z lensed galaxies, the transformation and evolution of galaxies in cluster cores and the use of multiple images to constrain cosmography.     Mapping the band structure of a surface phononic crystal

    We map the band structure of surface acoustic modes of a periodic array of copper lines embedded in a SiO2 film on a silicon substrate by means of the laser-induced transient grating technique. A detailed map of the lowest sheet of the ω(k) surface and partial maps of two higher-order sheets are obtained. We discuss the topology of the ω(k) surface and explain how it arises from the Rayleigh and Sezawa modes of the film/substrate system. In the vicinity of the bandgap formed at the Brillouin zone boundary, the first and second dispersion sheets take the form of a saddle and a bowl, respectively, in agreement with a weak perturbation model. The shape of the third dispersion sheet, however, appears to defy expectations based on the perturbation approach. In particular, it contains minima located off the symmetry directions, which implies the existence of zero group velocity modes with an obliquely directed wavevector.United States.     Magnetic field effects and magnetic anisotropy in lightly doped La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4

    The effects of the application of a magnetic field on the diagonal stripe spin-glass phase is studied in lightly doped La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 (x=0.014 and 0.024). With increasing magnetic field, the magnetic elastic intensity at the diagonal incommensurate (DIC) positions (1,\pm\epsilon,0) decreases as opposed to the increase seen in superconducting samples. This diminution in intensity with increasing magnetic field originates from a spin reorientation transition, which is driven by the antisymmetric exchange term in the spin Hamiltonian. On the other hand, the transition temperature, the incommensurability, and the peak width of the diagonal incommensurate correlations are not changed with magnetic field. This result suggests that the magnetic correlations are determined primarily by the charge disproportionation and that the geometry of the diagonal incommensurate magnetism is also determined by effects, that is, stripe formation which are not purely magnetic in origin. The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya antisymmetric exchange is nevertheless important in determining the local spin structure in the DIC stripe phase.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, to appear in Phys. Rev.

    Distribution of partition function zeros of the ±J\pm J model on the Bethe lattice

    The distribution of partition function zeros is studied for the ±J\pm J model of spin glasses on the Bethe lattice. We find a relation between the distribution of complex cavity fields and the density of zeros, which enables us to obtain the density of zeros for the infinite system size by using the cavity method. The phase boundaries thus derived from the location of the zeros are consistent with the results of direct analytical calculations. This is the first example in which the spin glass transition is related to the distribution of zeros directly in the thermodynamical limit. We clarify how the spin glass transition is characterized by the zeros of the partition function. It is also shown that in the spin glass phase a continuous distribution of singularities touches the axes of real field and temperature.Comment: 23 pages, 12 figure

    Anomalous Flux Flow Resistivity in Two Gap Superconductor MgB_2

    The flux flow resistivity associated with purely viscous motion of vortices in high-quality MgB_2 was measured by microwave surface impedance. Flux flow resistivity exhibits unusual field dependence with strong enhancement at low field, which is markedly different to conventional s-wave superconductors. A crossover field which separates two distinct flux flow regimes having different flux flow resistivity slopes was clearly observed in H//ab-plane. The unusual H-dependence indicates that two very differently sized superconducting gaps in MgB_2 manifest in the vortex dynamics and almost equally contribute to energy dissipation. The carrier scattering rate in two different bands is also discussed with the present results, compared to heat capacity and thermal conductivity results.Comment: 4 pages, 3figure

    The role of clustering and gridlike ordering in epidemic spreading

    The spreading of an epidemic is determined by the connectiviy patterns which underlie the population. While it has been noted that a virus spreads more easily on a network in which global distances are small, it remains a great challenge to find approaches that unravel the precise role of local interconnectedness. Such topological properties enter very naturally in the framework of our two-timestep description, also providing a novel approach to tract a probabilistic system. The method is elaborated for SIS-type epidemic processes, leading to a quantitative interpretation of the role of loops up to length 4 in the onset of an epidemic.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev.     Quasi-two-dimensional hole ordering and dimerized state in the CuO2-chain layers in Sr14Cu24O41

    Neutron scattering experiments have been performed on Sr14_{14}Cu24_{24}O41_{41} which consists of both chains and ladders of copper ions. We observed that the magnetic excitations from the CuO2_2 chain have two branches and that both branches are weakly dispersive along the aa and cc axes. The ω\omega-QQ dispersion relation as well as the intensities can be reasonably described by a random phase approximation with intradimer coupling between next-nearest-neighbor copper spins JJ=11 meV, interdimer coupling along the c axis JcJ_c=0.75 meV, and interdimer coupling along the a axis JaJ_a=0.75 meV. The dimer configuration indicates a quasi-two-dimensional hole ordering, resulting in an ordering of magnetic Cu2+^{2+} with spin-1/2 and nonmagnetic Cu, which forms the Zhang-Rice singlet. We have also studied the effect of Ca substitution for Sr on the dimer and the hole ordering.Comment: 7 pages, Revtex, 10 figures, Submitted to Phys. Rev.

    29-Si NMR and Hidden Order in URu2Si2

    We present new 29-Si NMR spectra in URu2Si2 for varying temperature T, and external field H. On lowering T, the systematics of the low-field lineshape and width reveal an extra component (lambda) to the linewidth below T_N ~ 17 K not observed previously. We find that lambda is magnetic-field independent and dominates the low-field lineshape for all orientations of H with respect to the tetragonal c axis. The behavior of lambda indicates a direct relationship between the 29-Si spin and the transition at T_N, but it is inconsistent with a coupling of the nuclei to static antiferromagnetic order/disorder of the U-spin magnetization. This leads us to conjecture that lambda is due to a coupling of 29-Si to the system's hidden-order parameter. A possible coupling mechanism involving charge degrees of freedom and indirect nuclear spin/spin interactions is proposed.
