    Robustness Analysis of Texture Features with Different Beamforming Techniques

    Texture features are often used on ultrasound images in various applications to give forth important clinical information. Recently, many beamforming techniques have been developed to provide better resolution and contrast in the final image. It is currently unknown, however, how these different techniques may also alter pixel intensity spatial distribution, known as texture. We provide here a robustness analysis of first and second order texture features using six beamforming techniques, on both phantom and in vivo musculoskeletal images. We show that second order texture features are more robust compared to first order features, especially when considering in vivo musculoskeletal images

    FROM AN INTEGRATED SURVEY WITH MMS TO A SCAN-TO-BIM PROCESS FOR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES

    The mobile mapping systems (MMSs) are increasingly used in the Architecture, Engineering and Construction sector (AEC). Their involvement in the digital transition of our cities and built heritage could be a valuable solution in speeding up the scan-to-BIM processes. In this framework, the course “Knowledge of the built heritage in the era of climate change” of Politecnico di Torino offers an innovative approach for MSc degree students in Building Engineering. In fact, it deals with the whole workflow from the surveying activities (data acquisition and processing), to the BIM modelling up to the final digital twin integrated with e.g. sensors data and management information. This contribution describes the case studies of the multidisciplinary course as an application for this methodology, where not only terrestrial laser scanning or UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) have been used, but also MMSs have been tested to understand if they could be a suitable option. This paper aims to show the course experience derived from the collaboration of the geomatics and drawing domains along with students’ results and feedback.     The Development of a 2D/3D BIM-GIS Web Platform for Planned Maintenance of Built and Cultural Heritage: the Main10ance Project

    The integration of Building Information Modeling (BIM), or Historic BIM (HBIM), and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) has assumed a crucial role not only in the management of smart cities or urban districts, as well as in the construction sector or infrastructures but also in the management, conservation and safeguarding of cultural heritage. This integration opens up new opportunities for decision-makers to assess the impact of interventions on heritage sites, evaluate preservation strategies, and facilitate informed decision-making processes. This contribution presents and describes the open-source web platform developed within the Interreg MAIN10ANCE project. The project aims to promote a common methodology for the cooperation and collaboration of the various stakeholders involved in the restoration, management and maintenance activities of built and cultural heritage sites. This objective has been pursued by creating a BIM-GIS database, focused on the definition of planned maintenance activities, whose data has been made available to professionals and management bodies by means of a shared web platform, usable directly in situ on a tablet or portable devices. The paper highlights the key components of the web platform, including the BIM, GIS, and artifact Viewers, the Planner, and the overall Dashboard. The platform's multiscale and multi-source approach makes it extensible to various cultural assets, whether environmental, architectural, or movable. By integrating historical and geometric information and planning maintenance activities, the web platform thus supports public administrations and professionals, amending existing state-of-the-art solutions

    LASER-VISUAL-INERTIAL ODOMETRY BASED SOLUTION FOR 3D HERITAGE MODELING: THE SANCTUARY OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN OF TROMPONE

    Abstract. The advent of new mobile mapping systems that integrate different sensors has made it easier to acquire multiple 3D information with high speed. Today, technological development has allowed the creation of portable systems particularly suitable for indoor surveys, which mainly integrating LiDAR devices, chambers and inertial platforms, make it possible to create in a fast and easy way, full 3D model of the environment. However, the performance of these instruments differs depending on the acquisition context (indoor and outdoor), the characteristics of the scene (for example lighting, the presence of objects and people, reflecting surfaces, textures) and, above all, the mapping and localization algorithms implemented in devices. The purpose of this study is to analyse the results, and their accuracy, deriving from a survey conducted with the KAARTA Stencil 2 handheld system. This instrument, composed of a 3D LiDAR Velodyne VLP-16, a MEMS inertial platform and a feature tracker camera, it is able to realize the temporal 3D map of the environment. Specifically, the acquisition tests were carried out in a context of metrical documentation of an architectural heritage, in order extract architectural detail for the future reconstruction of virtual and augmented reality environments and for Historical Building Information Modeling purposes. The achieved results were analysed and the discrepancies from some reference LiDAR data are computed for a final evaluation. The system was tested in the church and cloister of the Sanctuary of the Beata Vergine del Trompone in Moncrivello (VC) (Italy).</p

    HANDHELD VOLUMETRIC SCANNER for 3D PRINTED INTEGRATIONS of HISTORICAL ELEMENTS: COMPARISON and RESULTS

    The latest technologies in the field of geomatics and additive manufacturing can provide a significant support to the restoration and conservation activities of Cultural Heritage (CH). In particular, the recent developments for both the 3D scanning techniques and the 3D printing systems are able to speed up the survey and the reconstruction of historical fragments gone lost. This research compares different meshes, obtained with different instruments and techniques, in particular a medium and a short- range volumetric handheld camera, with the aim of evaluating the best solution for the 3D printing and provide some guidelines for this kind of operation. Therefore, the focus is mainly on identifying the most effective solution to describe, represent and subsequently model small architectural details in the most automatic way, in order to step from the survey to the final printed result in the shortest time possible. Moreover, an attempt to integrate and complete not only sculptural details, by now well stated in the state of art, but also architectural elements, respecting the principles of reversibility and material recognisability typical of the modern restoration theories, has been done. The case study examined is an historical wooden gilded door with the lack of some decorative parts, in a church in the centre of Turin (Italy), symbol of the baroque architecture and damaged by a fire occurred during the Second World War

    A dynamic link between H/ACA snoRNP components and cytoplasmic stress granules

    Many cell stressors block protein translation, inducing formation of cytoplasmic aggregates. These aggregates, named stress granules (SGs), are composed by translationally stalled ribonucleoproteins and their assembly strongly contributes to cell survival. Composition and dynamics of SGs are thus important starting points for identifying critical factors of the stress response. In the present study we link components of the H/ACA snoRNP complexes, highly concentrated in the nucleoli and the Cajal bodies, to SG composition. H/ACA snoRNPs are composed by a core of four highly conserved proteins -dyskerin, Nhp2, Nop10 and Gar1- and are involved in several fundamental processes, including ribosome biogenesis, RNA pseudouridylation, stabilization of small nucleolar RNAs and telomere maintenance. By taking advantage of cells overexpressing a dyskerin splice variant undergoing a dynamic intracellular trafficking, we were able to show that H/ACA snoRNP components can participate in SG formation, this way contributing to the stress response and perhaps transducing signals from the nucleus to the cytoplasm. Collectively, our results show for the first time that H/ACA snoRNP proteins can have additional non-nuclear functions, either independently or interacting with each other, thus further strengthening the close relationship linking nucleolus to SG composition

    A BENCHMARK FOR LARGE-SCALE HERITAGE POINT CLOUD SEMANTIC SEGMENTATION

    The lack of benchmarking data for the semantic segmentation of digital heritage scenarios is hampering the development of automatic classification solutions in this field. Heritage 3D data feature complex structures and uncommon classes that prevent the simple deployment of available methods developed in other fields and for other types of data. The semantic classification of heritage 3D data would support the community in better understanding and analysing digital twins, facilitate restoration and conservation work, etc. In this paper, we present the first benchmark with millions of manually labelled 3D points belonging to heritage scenarios, realised to facilitate the development, training, testing and evaluation of machine and deep learning methods and algorithms in the heritage field. The proposed benchmark, available at http://archdataset.polito.it/, comprises datasets and classification results for better comparisons and insights into the strengths and weaknesses of different machine and deep learning approaches for heritage point cloud semantic segmentation, in addition to promoting a form of crowdsourcing to enrich the already annotated databas

    Tuberculosis determined by Mycobacterium bovis in captive waterbucks (Kobus ellipsiprymnus) in São Paulo, Brazil

    Two waterbucks from São Paulo Zoo Foundation exhibited respiratory symptoms in July 2004. After euthanasia, granulommas in lungs and mediastinic lymph nodes were observed. Acid-fast bacilli isolated were identified as Mycobacterium bovis spoligotype SB0121 by PRA and spoligotyping. They were born and kept in the same enclosure with the same group, without any contact to other species housed in the zoo. This is the first detailed description of M. bovis infection in Kobus ellipsiprymnus.FAPES
