Monitoring the quality of tourism experience

The new economic era the experience economy that we entered in the XXI century is challenging the overall tourism industry and destinations to respond to visitor expectations in a radically different way, demanding a new vision on what is truly being delivered to them. Within the current era, tourism businesses and destinations, in order to thrive and compete globally, are bound to recognize that experience, not goods or services, are what motivates visitors to travel, repeat visits to the destinations and recommend it to friends and relatives. Being so, a research agenda for tourism development and quality should place at its centre the nature of tourist experience and meanings of quality tourist experience from the stakeholders point of view, so that the industry actors can take joint action supported by in-depth knowledge of meanings attached to experience. With few exceptions, in tourism related literature, quality tourism experience has been largely overlooked. However, tourist experience and tourism experience have been discussed by Clawson [1], [2], [3], [4], [5], [6], [7], [8], [9] among others. Clawson[1] wrote about recreation experience; Boorstin[2] discoursed on authenticity in tourist experience; Cohen[3], [4] studied the phenomenological tourist experience frames; MacCannell's[5] presented contemporaneous writings on tourist experience and authenticity. Pearce and Caltabiano[7] further extended consideration of traveller and tourist experience and authenticity with connections to motivations. Smith [6], Smith and Brent [8] addressed the interaction of host and guest in travel experience. Ryan [9] focused particularly on the `tourist experience'. Tourism and tourist experience past research have also focused on temporary and activity-based relationships [1] and some only on activity [10], [11]. Borrie and Birzell[12] presented four ways used to understand tourist and tourism experience. Those four ways include (1) meaningsbased[13], (2) benefits, (3) satisfaction[14], and (4) experience based means[4], [15]. Urry[16] introduced the notion of 'gaze' into considerations of tourist experience albeit 'his gazes' were challenged by Perkins and Thorns[17]. Although there has been considerable theoretical thinking on the subject, not much empirical research is available. One reason for this to happen is the multidimensional, complex and highly diversified nature of the tourist experience. Another reason is related to the fact that supporting constructs, namely satisfaction, quality and value, continue relatively ambiguous and are not always part of an integrated vision and consistent research. And yet, understanding of major and relevant dimensions of the tourist experience are of utmost importance to construct operationalization for effective experience management at destination level. The article proposes an integrated vision on how to monitor the quality of tourism in a mass tourism coastal destination the Algarve (Portugal). While analyzing the quality of the tourism experience from tourists' perspective represents the overall purpose of this paper, and the specific objectives are threefold. Firstly, the research intends to assess the tourists' perceptions on the four dimensions of the experience destination, attributes and compares them with satisfaction felt in terms of the same attributes. Secondly, it expects to provide an overall assessment of tourism experience. Thirdly, the study proposes to establish the relationship between tourist satisfaction and the tourist experience and destination loyalty.The questionnaires were based on the work of Oh, Fiori and Jeong [18], after having been adapted to the Algarve tourist destination context, and refer to the four areas of the Experience Economy: Education (items a, b, c, d), aesthetics (items e, f, g, h), Entertainment (i, j, k, l) and Escapism (m, n, o, p). The last three items- q, r, s are related to memory and memories. To that end, a survey was carried out sampling 405 individuals. Of the 397 valid questionnaires obtained, 90% were answered by tourists from Portugal, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, Ireland and the United Kingdom. The results show about 95% of the respondents are satisfied and very satisfied. Approximately 95.3% of the respondents say they are satisfied and very satisfied with their stay in the Algarve. About the quality of lived experience, 77.3% classified very good and excellent. One of the important findings of this research is that the majority of the respondents (93`)/0) intends to recommend the Algarve to friends and relatives. With this research, the team expects to contribute to a thorough understanding of tangible and intangible activities and attributes that form the underlying basis of the tourist experience in coastal tourism

Violência na intimidade: crenças da comunidade Africana Lusófona residente em Portugal

This study aims to identify the beliefs of the Lusophone African community, living in Portugal, about intimate partner violence. Participants (n=70) answered to an online survey, adapted from the Scale of Beliefs on Conjugal Violence. The results indicated a reduced legitimation of intimate partner violence, except when it refers to "small" violence. The male participants, those who had no contact with the intimate violence and also those who evaluated the episodes as "not serious" legitimized more intimate violence. Participants that were urban residents and also those who lived longer in Portugal had a lower tolerance to violence. The participants who admitted being victims of intimate partner violence (17.3%) were mostly female. This research aims to contribute to a greater awareness about the theme, to the progressive transformation of discourses about violence in intimacy and the development of political-legal actions to combat the high occurrence of violence in intimacy.Este estudo teve como objetivo identificar as crenças da comunidade luso-africana, residente em Portugal, sobre a violência na intimidade. Os participantes (n=70) responderam a um questionário online, adaptado da Escala de Crenças sobre a Violência Conjugal. Os resultados apontaram para uma reduzida legitimação da violência, na intimidade, sendo a “pequena” violência a mais legitimada. Os participantes do sexo masculino, sem contacto com a problemática e que avaliaram os episódios como “não graves” apresentaram maior legitimação da violência. Os participantes de zonas urbanas e os residentes há mais tempo em Portugal apresentavam uma menor tolerância à violência. Dos participantes, 17.3% admitiu ter experienciado violência na intimidade, sendo maioritariamente do sexo feminino. Seroprevalencija virusa Zapadnog Nila u ptica u europskim državama: sistematski pregled

West Nile fever is a mosquito-borne viral disease that can affect birds, humans and horses, causing asymptomatic infection, mild fever, meningitis, encephalitis, and death. The aim of this study was to perform a systematic review of West Nile virus (WNV) seroprevalence studies in birds in European countries between 2010 and 2023. Three electronic databases – PubMed, ScienceDirect and Scopus – were searched for relevant publications using predetermined keywords. A total of 4,872 papers were found, and 39 results included in the article, after removing duplicates and applying the eligibility criteria. Further monitoring and epidemiological studies of WNV in Europe is advised, considering the threat that this disease can pose to humans and animals.Groznica Zapadnog Nila je virusna bolest koju prenose komarci, a koja pogađa ptice, konje i ljude prouzročeći asimptomatsku infekciju, blagu groznicu, meningitis, encefalitis i smrt. Cilj je ove studije bio obaviti sistematski pregled za analizu studija seroprevalencije virusa Zapadnog Nila u ptica u europskim državama između 2010. i 2023. godine. Pretražene su tri elektroničke baze podataka – PubMed, ScienceDirect i Scopus ‒ za relevantne publikacije uporabom unaprijed određenih ključnih riječi. Prvotno je pronađeno ukupno 4.872 rada, a 39 rezultata je na kraju uključeno u članak, nakon uklanjanja duplikata i primjene kriterija prihvatljivosti. Development of electrochemical methods for determination of tramadol - analytical application to pharmaceutical dosage forms

A square-wave voltammetric (SWV) method and a flow injection analysis system with amperometric detection were developed for the determination of tramadol hydrochloride. The SWV method enables the determination of tramadol over the concentration range of 15-75 µM with a detection limit of 2.2 µM. Tramadol could be determined in concentrations between 9 and 50 µM at a sampling rate of 90 h-1, with a detection limit of 1.7 µM using the flow injection system. The electrochemical methods developed were successfully applied to the determination of tramadol in pharmaceutical dosage forms, without any pre-treatment of the samples. Recovery trials were performed to assess the accuracy of the results; the values were between 97 and 102% for both methods

Representações da realidade política e da vida religiosa portuguesa no início do século XX John Bull e Zé Povinho de Albert Kotnay

Dissertação apresentada para cumprimento dos requisitos necessários à obtenção do grau de Mestre em Línguas, Literaturas e CulturasNa antologia de crónicas John Bull e Zé Povinho: Análise à Vida Portuguesa (1918), escrita por Abílio Caetano da Silva sob o heterónimo Albert Kotnay, procede-se a uma análise exaustiva da vida política portuguesa no período da Primeira República, bem como a uma apreciação dos costumes, temperamento e estilo de vida lusos em contraste com os britânicos. A obra, caída no esquecimento, aborda também temas sociais, a corrupção, os jogos de poder, a influência dos políticos e dos jornalistas sobre os eleitores e dos padres sobre os fiéis, sobretudo do sexo feminino, e a religiosidade supersticiosa. O texto transmite as ideias de um autor português que se oculta sob uma identidade heteronímica britânica para se proteger contra eventuais ataques pessoais. As estratégias adoptadas para expor e censurar as práticas e os métodos manipulativos da classe política e do clero excercidos sobre um povo iletrado e supersticioso são a ironia, o humor, a caricatura e a comparação entre os sistemas e os valores britânicos e portugueses, elogiando sempre os primeiros. Essas estratégias narrativas são utilizadas pelo autor quando aborda os tópicos que iremos analisar - política e religião - especialmente quando interpreta o ethos, os costumes e as características de cada uma das nações. Kotnay recorre às caricaturas John Bull e Zé Povinho, dois estereótipos nacionais, para contrastar as idiossincrasias de ambas as personagens e povos e para corrigir as “anomalias” lusas, apresentando imagens caricatas e plenas de realismo. Ao longo deste estudo, analisámos a recepção da obra pela crítica e notámos um padrão nos comentários: a reprovação do estilo directo e caricatural de Kotnay, não obstante o reconhecimento por alguns periódicos da veracidade de certos “defeitos nacionais” denunciados pelo autor. A nossa abordagem literária e histórica permitiu-nos identificar a autoria da narrativa em estudo, analisar o uso do heterónimo britânico, contextualizar a produção da obra e revisitar o período em questão, recorrendo à historiografia mas sobretudo à leitura da imprensa da época (1910-1919), comparando os temas e a realidade representada e criticada nos periódicos e em John Bull e Zé Povinho

Despertar para a arte infantil no jardim de infância

Relatório Final de Prática de Ensino Supervisionada do Mestrado em Educação Pré-escolar e Ensino do 1.º Ciclo do Ensino Básico apresentado na Escola Superior de Educação do Instituto Politécnico de Viana do Castelo“Despertar para a Arte Infantil no Jardim de Infância” é uma investigação-ação que se situa no contexto da Expressão Plástica (EP) no Jardim de Infância e pretendem testar estratégias e conteúdos artísticos, de forma a compreender o valor atribuído a esta dimensão curricular. A recolha de dados ocorreu numa sala com vinte e uma crianças com idades compreendidas entre os quatro e cinco anos num Jardim de Infância que está integrado numa Instituição Particular de Solidariedade Social em Viana do Castelo. Os resultados da análise da literatura permitiram concluir que a Arte tem uma contribuição fundamental na educação global das crianças, especialmente no que se refere ao seu desempenho académico, bem-estar e atitudes em relação à escola. Conclui-se também que estando a Expressão Plástica presente nas Orientações Curriculares (1997) e que apesar de contar com o apoio dos organismos governamentais diretamente para a promoção de educação artística, no entanto os(as) educadores(as) evidenciam falta de confiança e de validade na promoção de competências, atitudes e capacidades neste setor, não entendendo que aprender a desenhar signos visuais é um processo muito semelhante ao da aprendizagem de signos verbais. Decorrente da análise e interpretação de dados verifica-se que a dinamização de estratégias e conteúdos de EP, apoiada por uma atmosfera de envolvimento nessa área, facilitou e aumentou o gosto e motivação das crianças e das educadoras para o conhecimento e compreensão da função da Arte na educação infantil. Ficou claro ser urgente e necessário uma formação contínua dos atores educativos pois inovação e mudança nas práticas de Expressão Plástica dependem do sistemático desenvolvimento de processos de reflexão e avaliação das ações, e de estratégias observacionais e partilha crítica de informação e que estudos como este oferecem uma oportunidade de se iniciar uma reforma sustentável em EP.“Awakening to the Children's Art in Kindergarten" is a action-research which is situated in the Plastic Expression (PE) context in Kindergarten and want to test strategies and artistic content in order to understand the value assigned to this curricular dimension. Data collection occurred in a room with twenty-one children aged between four and five years in a kindergarten that is part of a Private Institution of Social Solidarity in Viana do Castelo, the literature results review indicated that the Art has a fundamental contribution to the overall children education, especially with regard to their academic performance, well-being, attitudes toward school. It also follows that being the Plastic Expression (PE) present in the Curricular Guidelines (1997) and have the government support directly to the arts education promotion, however the educators show lack of confidence and validity in the promotion of skills, attitudes and abilities in this sector, not realizing that learning to draw visual signs is a process very similar to the learning of verbal signs. Resulting from the data analysis and interpretation it appears that the PE strategy and content dynamics backed by an involvement atmosphere in this area, facilitated and improved the children and teachers taste and motivation for the function of art knowledge and understanding in childhood education. It was clear the urgent need and a continuous training of educational actors because innovation and change in the Plastic Expression practice depend on the systematic development of reflection processes and actions evaluation and observational strategies and sharing critical information and studies like this provide an opportunity to start a sustainable reform in PE
