Six new Frustulia species (Bacillariophyta) in Tierra del Fuego peatbogs, Patagonia, Argentina
During a survey of the freshwater aquatic diatom flora of two peat bog areas in Tierra del Fuego, southern Argentina, six taxa belonging to the genus Frustulia that could not be identified were observed. Comparison with the type material of Frustulia (Navicula) crassinervia separated the Tierra del Fuego populations showing some resemblance as a new species: F. australocrassinervia sp. nov. The other five taxa are likewise described as new based on light and scanning electron microscopy observations and comparison with all known Frustulia species worldwide. Frustulia delicatula sp. nov., F. ellipticolanceolata sp. nov., F. fuegiana sp. nov., F. patagonica sp. nov. and F. yaganiana sp. nov. Comments are made on their taxonomic position and how they can be distinguished from other Frustulia species in this genus. Brief notes on the ecology and distribution of the seven taxa are added.Fil: Casa, Valeria. Universidad Nacional de San MartÃn. What shapes edaphic communities in mineral and ornithogenic soils of Cierva Point, Antarctic Peninsula?
Three mineral soil and four ornithogenic soil sites were sampled during summer 2006 at Cierva Point (Antarctic Peninsula) to study their bacterial, microalgal and faunal communities in relation to abiotic and biotic features. Soil moisture, pH, conductivity, organic matter and nutrient contents were consistently lower and more homogeneous in mineral soils. Ornithogenic soils supported larger and more variable bacterial abundances than mineral ones. Algal communities from mineral soils were more diverse than those from ornithogenic soils, although chlorophyll- a concentrations were significantly higher in the latter. This parameter and bacterial abundance were correlated with nutrient and organic matter contents. The meiofauna obtained from mineral soils was homogeneous, with one nematode species dominating all samples. The fauna of ornithogenic soils varied widely in composition and abundance. Tardigrades and rotifers dominated the meiofauna at eutrophic O2, where they supported a large population of the predatory nematode Coomansus gerlachei. At site O3, high bacterial abundance was consistent with high densities of the bacterivorous nematodes Plectus spp. This study provides evidence that Antarctic soils are complex and diverse systems, and suggests that biotic interactions (e.g. competition and predation) may have a stronger and more direct influence on community variability in space and time than previously thought.Fil: Mataloni, Maria Gabriela. Fish-killing diatom bloom in an urban recreational pond: An index case for a global warming scenario?
By the end of the exceptionally warm and stormy autumn of 2018, a fish kill occurred in a small hypertrophic pond located in a recreative green area in Buenos Aires (BA, Argentina). As there were no visible signs of an algal bloom, the causes for the die-off were investigated. On 1st June, the pond was sampled while fish, mostly Bryconamericus iheringii (Characidae) and Australoheros facetus (Cichlidae) were still dying. Despite low turbidity (18.9 NTU) and chlorophyll a concentration values (15.90 µg/L) as compared to similar BA waterbodies, a heavy bloom of planktonic araphid diatoms (161,600 ind/mL) was detected, mainly caused by Fragilaria saxoplanctonica (Fragilariaceae), Pseudostaurosira neoelliptica (Fragilariaceae) and Ulnaria cf. acus (Fragilariaceae). Previous records of high abundances of these or closely related planktonic diatoms around the world were associated with increased temperature and nutrient content, yet they did not cause other than nuisance blooms. Fish necropsy showed good body condition except for gill damage and mucus accumulation due to a large amount of frustules of these species, mainly P. neoelliptica, interspersed in the gill filaments. Although this is a common cause for die-offs in marine fish farms, it is unprecedented in freshwater systems, and particularly in urban waterbodies. Conversely to more common –and foreseeable-summer cyanobacterial blooms in these systems, this phenomenon was triggered by an autumnal weather anomaly. This fact is crucial, as non-summer heat waves and heavy storms are predicted to increase in frequency and intensity over the subtropical regions, yet their ecological consequences are less perceived, seldom studied, and far from understood. This could be the first documented case of many to occur in such heavily eutrophicated environments unless effective strategies for eutrophication control and management are taken.Fil: Casa, Valeria. Cambios estacionales dependientes de la hidrologÃa en el fitoplancton de un rÃo subtropical (Riacho Formosa, Argentina).
The Riacho Formosa is one of many autochtonous watercourses running along the subtropical region of the Wet Chaco Plains and draining into Paraguay River. Their typical hydrological cycle is characterized by a late winter low phase and a high phase throughout the warm season. As part of a baseline characterization, the composition and structure of the phytoplankton were studied in relation to river depth, water temperature, pH, conductivity and transparency through 4 seasonal samplings between June 2015 and March 2016. A rich phytoplankton community (338 taxa) was revealed in this study. A few species of Cryptophyceae and Euglenophyceae dominated the community, especially during low waters. A cluster analysis showed that community compositions were more dissimilar over time than along the watercourse, and were spatially more homogeneous during high waters. A canonical correspondence analysis showed that environmental features significantly explained 42.6% of the total variance of species data (p= 0.004). We conclude that phytoplankton responds to hydrological changes through a high species turnover, with dominance peaks of euryhaline, shadow adapted and organic matter exploiting taxa during low waters.Cambios estacionales dependientes de la hidrologÃa en el fitoplancton de un rÃo subtropical (Riacho Formosa, Argentina). Planktonic eukaryote molecular diversity: discrimination of minerotrophic and ombrotrophic peatland pools in Tierra del Fuego (Argentina)
We investigated the composition of the smallest size fraction (<3 µm) of eukaryotic plankton communities of five pools located in the Rancho Hambre peat bog in Argentinean Tierra del Fuego with an IlluminaHiSeq massive sequencing approach applied to the v9 region of the eukaryotic SSU rRNA gene. Communities were generally dominated by chrysophytes, with a good representation of Perkinsea and Cercozoa clade NC-10. A community composition analysis performed using GUniFraC separated minerotrophic and ombrotrophic sites, reflecting perfectly the classification of the sites based on environmental data. However, this separation disappeared when more weight was given to abundant phylotypes, suggesting that subordinate phylotypes were responsible for site discrimination. The 5% best indicators for, respectively, minerotrophic and ombrotrophic environments were searched using an IndVal analysis. Among these, autotrophic taxa were more common in minerotrophic environments, whereas mixotrophic taxa represented best ombrotrophic water bodies. However, the ecological traits of many taxa have still not been determined, and still needs to be investigated for a better understanding of freshwater systems ecolog

A reassessment of testate amoebae diversity in Tierra del Fuego peatlands: Implications for large scale inferences
Testate amoebae are a diverse group of shelled protists frequently used as model organisms in microbial biogeography. Relatively few species have been reported for the Southern Hemisphere, however, it remains unclear whether this lower diversity is real or an artifact of under-sampling or misidentifications, which would reduce their potential to address macroecological questions. We evaluated testate amoebae diversity from the full range of habitats occurring within two Tierra del Fuego peatlands and compared it with the reported diversity for the area and from the Northern Hemisphere peatlands. We recorded 87 species, of which 69 are new for the region and 45 of them probably new to science and likely to have restricted geographical distributions. Combined with previous studies, the total diversity of testate amoebae only from Tierra del Fuego peatlands now reaches 119, as compared with 183 reported from all Northern Hemisphere peatlands. Our results demonstrate that the number of Gondwanian and Neotropical endemic testate amoeba may be substantially higher than currently known. Previous reports of Holarctic taxa in Tierra del Fuego may result from forcing the identification of morphotypes to the descriptions in the most common literature (force-fitting) South American species into species common in literature from other regions.Fil: Burdman, Luciana. The plankton communities from peat bog pools: structure, temporal variation and environmental factors
This is the first characterization of the structure and temporal variation of the plankton communities comprising the complete food web in five peat bog pools related to environmental factors over two consecutive ice-free periods in Tierra del Fuego (548S). Remarkably, picophytoplankton was composed solely of eukaryotic cells, surpassing the dominance expectations for these acidic water bodies, whereas testaceans were virtually absent, even as tychoplankters. Abundances of the different planktonic communities were slightly higher than those reported for Northern Hemisphere peat bogs and humic lakes. Mixotrophic nutrition prevailed among nano- and microphytoplankters, a strategy also common in humic lakes. The structures in spring of the planktonic communities were similar. In contrast, in late summer there were differences in the abundance and biomass of the different trophic compartments among small, shallow water bodies and large ones. These seem to be dictated by distinct pool size-driven patterns of water temperature variation. A general shift in the control of heterotrophic flagellates abundance in the pools occurred, changing from bottom-up regulation in spring to top-down control in late summer related to temperature-dependant variations in zooplankton abundance and composition. We hypothesize that changes in the trophic interactions affecting the entire food web occur over the open water period in these aquatic ecosystems, and that these are dictated by pool morphometry and related abiotic features.Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y MuseoInstituto de LimnologÃa "Dr. Raul A.
