Dynamics of EHD Laminar Plumes: scaling analysis and integral model

    Get PDF
In this paper electrohydrodynamic (EHD) plumes are examined in the region far from the injecting electrode and the collector plate, for both two-dimensional and axisymmetric geometries. The relative importance of the conduction mechanisms (convection, drift and diffusion of electric charge) is analyzed. Diffusion turns out to be negligible compared to convection and drift for the experimental conditions. But the transverse drift (Coulomb repulsion) is of the same order of magnitude than convection. We find a set of three differential equations giving the evolution of the velocity at the center of the plume and the widths of the plume and the charged core inside.Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnología PB96-137

I Behave Well (and my Teacher too): Memory and Suggestion in Preschoolers

    Get PDF
This study examined how valence (positive and negative actions) and the action's agent (teacher or child) influenced memory and the acceptance of suggestion in preschoolers. In a first session, preschoolers aged between 3 and 6 years old interacted with a teacher and performed different tasks. A week later, an interviewer asked yes or no questions to the children with regard to the activities carried out in the previous session. Results revealed the effect of age on memory performance and suggestion, which were evaluated by yes/no answers given to the task of recognition. In addition, there was a higher correct recognition for the teacher's actions than for the children ones. However, suggestions about teacher's actions were less accepted than children ones. Also, positive suggestions were more accepted than negative ones. In conclusion, setting aside the typical effect of age on correct recognition and acceptance of suggestion, the questions' content influenced both measures differently: Correct recognition was exclusively influenced by the action's agent, whereas suggestion was affected by valence and the action´s agent.     &nbsp

The economic and financial efficiency of two 10 m3 geomembrane biodigesters to treat swine and cattle residuals was evaluated. The study took place at the Cooperative of Credits and Services (CCS) of the municipality of Cumanayagua, Cienfuegos, Cuba. Its aim was to apply a procedure to evaluate investment projects management, based on the logical framework approach. The indicators for evaluation and the indexes of component and management were determined in two moments within the life cycle of the biodigesters: preparation and evaluation. The biodigester for swine residues had +185% economic efficiency, totally corresponding to the results from physical and financial efficacy, along with 69% undervalued operational costs. On the other hand, the biodigester for cattle residues had -90%, -87% periodic efficiencies, along with decreased relative physical, financial and cost efficacies, as well as a reduction of operational costs to 37 and 67%, respectively. In general terms, the economic efficiency had the greatest difficulties during the first three years of the application, caused by unbalances between the planned income and the real expenses. To conclude, biodigesters ranged from low to moderate operation, according to the values preset for the research. Technology proved feasibility, but the economic and financial variables were monitored permanently

The efficiency of twelve 10 m3 geomembrane biodigesters to treat swine and cattle residuals was assessed. The study took place at the Cooperative of Credits and Services (CCS) of the municipality of Cumanayagua, Cienfuegos, Cuba. Its goal was to evaluate feasibility of technology implementation in Cuba.  The effluent physical and chemical indicators were determined at entry and exit from biodigesters. The biodigesters charged with pig manure were able to remove 75.88% COD, and up to 66-44% SS. Besides, 64.79% of the contaminating organic load was converted into volatile products during biofermentation. Meanwhile, the biodigesters charged with cattle manure removed 60.42% of COD, and up to 67.67% of SS; 61.51% of the organic contaminating load was converted in volatile products. It was concluded that the biodigesters had acceptable efficiency values, and that the technology can be applied in Cuba.

Computing wildfire behaviour metrics from CFD simulation data

    Get PDF
In this article, we demonstrate a new post-processing methodology which can be used to analyse CFD wildfire simulation outputs in a model-independent manner. CFD models produce a great deal of quantitative output but require additional post-processing to calculate commonly used wildfire behaviour metrics. Such post-processing has so far been model specific. Our method takes advantage of the 3D renderings that are a common output from such models and provides a means of calculating important fire metrics such as rate of spread and flame height using image processing techniques. This approach can be applied similarly to different models and to real world fire behaviour datasets, thus providing a new framework for model validation. Furthermore, obtained information is not limited to average values over the complete domain but spatially and temporally explicit metric distributions are provided. This feature supports posterior statistical analyses, ultimately contributing to more detailed and rigorous fire behaviour studies.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Evaluation of CNN architectures for gait recognition based on optical flow maps

    Get PDF
This work targets people identification in video based on the way they walk (\ie gait) by using deep learning architectures. We explore the use of convolutional neural networks (CNN) for learning high-level descriptors from low-level motion features (\ie optical flow components). The low number of training samples for each subject and the use of a test set containing subjects different from the training ones makes the search of a good CNN architecture a challenging task.Universidad de Málaga.
