A New Implementation of GMRES Using Generalized Purcell Method

    Get PDF
In this paper, a new method based on the generalized Purcell method is proposed to solve the usual least-squares problem arising in the GMRES method. The theoretical aspects and computational results of the method are provided. For the popular iterative method GMRES, the decomposition matrices of the Hessenberg matrix is obtained by using a simple recursive relation instead of Givens rotations. The other advantages of the proposed method are low computational cost and no need for orthogonal decomposition of the Hessenberg matrix or pivoting. The comparisons for ill-conditioned sparse standard matrices are made. They show a good agreement with available literature

Numerical solution of linear time delay systems using Chebyshev-tau spectral method

    Get PDF
In this paper, a hybrid method based on method of steps and a Chebyshev-tau spectral method for solving linear time delay systems of differential equations is proposed. The method first converts the time delay system to a system of ordinary dierential equations by the method of steps and then employs Chebyshev polynomials to construct an approx- imate solution for the system. In fact, the solution of the system is expanded in terms of orthogonal Chebyshev polynomials which reduces the solution of the system to the solution of a system of algebraic equations. Also, we transform the coefficient matrix of the algebraic system to a block quasi upper triangular matrix and the latter system can be solved more efficiently than the first one. Furthermore, using orthogonal Chebyshev polynomials enables us to apply fast Fourier transform for calculating matrix-vector multiplications which makes the proposed method to be more efficient. Consistency, stability and convergence analysis of the method are provided. Numerous numerical examples are given to demonstrate efficiency and accuracy of the method. Comparisons are made with available literature

AbstractThe aim of this paper is to study the stability analysis of novel ETD scheme proposed by the authors based on spectral methods, the exponential time differencing and Taylor expansion. Stability issue of the proposed numerical scheme is related to an analysis of the stability of the corresponding ODE system for time marching approach. It is proved that the novel scheme is L2-stable in solving the Kuramoto–Sivashinsky model problems. The truncation error and the stability region for the novel scheme are provided. Comparisons with available literature are made

Numerical Solution of Some Nonlinear Volterra Integral Equations of the First Kind

    Get PDF
In this paper, the solving of a class of the nonlinear Volterra integral equations (NVIE) of the first kind is investigated. Here, we convert NVIE of the first kind to a linear equation of the second kind. Then we apply the operational Tau method to the problem and prove convergence of the presented method. Finally, some numerical examples are given to show the accuracy of the method

A futures study into identifying the driving forces in neighbourhood-based management, using good urban governance: The case of Region 2 in Tabriz, Iran

    Get PDF
This article investigates the use of futures studies to predict the implemention of a new approach to neighbourhood-based management, emphasising good urban governance components in the planning and management of the Tabriz metropolis, Iran. Using a qualititative approach, the Delphi technique, comprising two rounds, was used to identify the initial and key factors that affect the realisation of neighbourhoodbased management. Using questionnaires, in Round 1, participants answered one question on what they predict the key factors for good urban governance are and, in Round 2, they weighted the 48 identified initial factors from Round 1 in a matrix, on an 4-point Likert scale, to determine the influence on each factor. Cross-impact analysis of the influence data were extracted by MICMAC software and results showed 17 driving forces (eight in accountability, five in equity, two in trans-parency and one in participation) that will predict the realisation of good neigh-bourhood-based manage-ment in the planning and management of the Tabriz metropolis. Findings showed that futures studies can be used as a new approach to accurately identify the driving forces for good urban governance with the realistic use of the capabilities of the community

Critical Reread of a Debate: Anscombe and Lewis Dispute in Rejection of Atheistic Naturalism

    Get PDF
In 1948 a legendary debate occurred at the Oxford Socratic Club between C. S. Lewis and Elizabeth Anscombe. In this meeting, Lewis shows that atheistic naturalism is refute in meaning the strict materialism. Anscombe makes three basic criticisms against Lewis' argument:1. Lack of distinction between irrational and non-rrational causes of belief,2. The threat of skepticism,3. Lack of distinction between types of “full” explanations. Lewis and Anscombe's views can be considered in several ways: 1. Despite Anscombe's correct critique, the lack of distinction between irrational and non-rational causes does not solve the problem of naturalism which is an inference belief of other beliefs. 2. Anscombe considers that “if naturalism is correct, there is no valid human argument”, is a skeptical threat to knowledge, while this objection does not problem on Lewis' argument. 3. Contrary to Anscombe's claim, the ommisive approach to other explanations is not a consequence of Lewis's Argument, but the main idea of naturalism itself. 4. Lewis's incorrect analysis of mental states is accidental because he considers the origin of these states to be non-physical. 5. Lewis did not explain well what he meant by “did not explain well what he meant by "the impossibility of evolutionary processes in creating creatures with perception and understanding of creatures without understanding”. By an analytical, comparative and critical insightcan eliminate, correct and reconstruct the weaknesses of Anscombe and Lewis' views

Identifying Indicators of Environmentally Sustainable Agriculture in Paddy Fields of Guilan Province

    Get PDF
I n recent years, agriculture has become the prime polluter of natural resources. It is therefore essential to make assessments based on reliable indicators to ensure that an agricultural system remains not only productive, but also ecologically sound. A large area of arable land in Guilan province is devoted to rice cultivation so the transition to environmentally sound agricultural practice in paddy fields of the province is an important strategy. The main purpose of this study was to present a new and comprehensive framework for assessing environmentally sound agricultural practice applicable to the paddy fields in Guilan Province. A review of the relevant literature identified environmentally sound indicators that had been used by researchers in recent years. Then some parameters were introduced for examination and prioritization. The proposed structural model includes seven factors and 21 indicators. The target population included university faculty members and researchers who were familiar with the concepts of agricultural sustainability and that were familiar with the Guilan paddy fields. A structural on-line questionnaire was the main instrument used to gather information. Based on experts' points of view, the coefficient of significance for each of the selected indicators was measured using the Yager fuzzy screening method. The results obtained from structured questionnaires showed that 20 of the 21 indicators were appropriate for assessing environmentally sustainable agriculture. Single-Phase Flow of Non-Newtonian Fluids in Porous Media

The study of flow of non-Newtonian fluids in porous media is very important and serves a wide variety of practical applications in processes such as enhanced oil recovery from underground reservoirs, filtration of polymer solutions and soil remediation through the removal of liquid pollutants. These fluids occur in diverse natural and synthetic forms and can be regarded as the rule rather than the exception. They show very complex strain and time dependent behavior and may have initial yield-stress. Their common feature is that they do not obey the simple Newtonian relation of proportionality between stress and rate of deformation. Non-Newtonian fluids are generally classified into three main categories: time-independent whose strain rate solely depends on the instantaneous stress, time-dependent whose strain rate is a function of both magnitude and duration of the applied stress and viscoelastic which shows partial elastic recovery on removal of the deforming stress and usually demonstrates both time and strain dependency. In this article the key aspects of these fluids are reviewed with particular emphasis on single-phase flow through porous media. The four main approaches for describing the flow in porous media are examined and assessed. These are: continuum models, bundle of tubes models, numerical methods and pore-scale network modeling.Comment: 94 pages, 12 figures, 1 tabl
