Anxiety Alleviating Intervention Strategies: Applicability for Nursing Students

    Get PDF
College attendance is considered a period of transition during which students are vulnerable to mental health issues. College nursing students have additional stressors other college students do not have to face. In addition to the intense theoretical learning encompassed in a nursing program, nursing students are required to perform clinical and critical thinking skills. Nursing students are thrust into the professional environment while still developing their knowledge base, which can be a great source of anxiety. Research has found that college student anxiety can have a detrimental effect on the student’s learning process. Several different interventional strategies that have been utilized to alleviate anxiety in college students will be discussed. Recommendations regarding different interventional strategies that can be utilized to alleviate nursing student anxiety, some of which may be used preventatively will be presented. Further, recommendations regarding future research to assess the applicability of some interventional strategies with nursing students will be outlined

As an exploration of family and personal history, Home is. aims not only to chronicle my own experiences and memories, but to touch upon the innumerable definitions of the word “home”. The objects are rooted in personal reflection, but each one refers to an aspect of play, identity, love, loss, or regret, inherent within any family. Although they do serve as a blueprint of my life, they are meant to stand as moments shared by all

The Use of Brand Function in Sport Event Sponsorship

    Get PDF
The focus for this MProf dissertation is in the field of sport sponsorship. There are four main sections, the first of which provides an introduction and a critical appraisal of the submission's demonstration of achievement of the stated MProf learning outcomes. The next three sections are re-presentations of work that have already been completed and passed at grade 8, as assessments for three of the programme taught modules. The first of these contains a literature review that looks at the development of sport sponsorship research that has produced findings on the importance of sponsorship fit and leveraging. The discussion in this section progresses through to a question as to whether brands that play a functional role within a sponsorship may be more successful than those that do not and might thereby achieve more positive perceptions of the sponsor's brand. The next section provides discussion on possible methodologies for research that look into this area and more specifically whether sponsor/brand function within a sponsorship is an effective approach by which to achieve a strong sponsorship fit. Using two hypotheses the discussion then progresses through to a possible methodology for research that is built in three stages with a mix of both quantitative and qualitative approaches, using surveys and focus groups. As required, the last section contains a practice and development portfolio that provides critical discussion on the author's career development and focus on his work in sport sponsorship

“It’s All Me… In One Way or Another”: Transgressive Queer Embodiment in the Music Videos of Marilyn Manson

My work attempts to understand the deployment of transgressive queerness in contemporary American popular music videos. Rather than aligning with either the conservative moral panics or liberal arguments regarding free speech, I suggest that productive alternative understandings exist outside of this oppositional binary. Focusing on Marilyn Manson, particularly, I analyze how various performances open up a space of potentiality for greater imaginings of embodiment and erotics. The music of Marilyn Manson presents a scathing critique of the cultural landscape of the United States in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Through performance, the band is critical of religion, particularly Christianity, capitalism, and numerous ideologies of normativity, including beauty and sexuality. This performative commentary manifests in a number of different forms, which can each be traced, in true Deleuzian fashion, back to different nodes along a common theoretical plane—a rhizomatic constellation of critical discourse—of queer and gender studies. I begin by situating Manson as gesturing toward an eroticized posthuman aesthetic. Informed by diverse scholars such as feminist theorist of science Donna Haraway, gender theorists Kim Toffoletti and Judith “Jack” Halberstam, and musicologists Suzanne Cusick and Judith Peraino, I argue that Manson discursively suggests alternative ways of being—and ways of being erotic—outside of normative humanity. Essentially, Manson asks why, in a society so inundated with intersections of technology and the body, must we insist on notions of the “natural” body as superior to other modes of being, particularly regarding the erotic? I extend this argument to examine tropes of the non-normative erotic body in Marilyn Manson’s oeuvre in relation to theories of transgender embodiment, which is informed by my own musicological work, as well as the work of contemporary queer and transgender studies scholars. I suggest that through constant erotic depiction on non-normative bodies, the performances of Marilyn Manson provide a space of possibility for the viewer to realize powerful alternatives to the normative mainstream discourse regarding viable ways of being and forms of erotic pleasure. As such, these polemical performances might serve to destabilize conservative notions of appropriate behavior and acceptable citizenship in contemporary American culture

The new constitutional role of the judiciary

Over the last few decades, the UK has experienced a profound – if quiet – constitutional transformation. The judicial reception of EU law, for instance, has been described as ‘one of the most fundamental realignments of the constitutional order since the end of the seventeenth century’. But these developments have hardly been appreciated within broader public debates, which remain rooted in/anchored to notions of parliamentary sovereignty

Serious actualism, typography, and incompossible sentences

    Get PDF
Serious actualists take it that all properties are existence entailing. I present a simple puzzle about sentence tokens which seems to show that serious actualism is false. I then consider the most promising response to the puzzle. This is the idea that the serious actualist should take ordinary property-talk to contain an implicit existential presupposition. I argue that this approach does not work: it fails to generalise appropriately to all sentence types and tokens. In particular, it fails to capture the right distinctions we ought to make between what I call typographical sentence types—an interesting and previously undiscussed class of fine-grained sentence types which are partially individuated by their typography, or how they look when written out.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
