    Neodymium and gadolinium extraction from molten fluorides by reduction on a reactive electrode

    This work describes the electrochemical extraction on a reactive cathode (Cu, Ni) of two lanthanides Ln (Ln = Nd and Gd) from molten LiF-CaF2 medium at 840 and 920°C for Nd and 940°C for Gd. Extraction runs have been performed and the operating conditions (cathodic material and temperature) optimised. The titration of the Nd and Gd concentrations in the melt during extraction used square wave voltammetry. At the end of each run, the residual Ln content was checked by ICP-AES; the extraction efficiencies of the two lanthanides were found to be more than 99.8% on both reactive substrates

    This article deals with the different modes of preparation of alloys or intermetallic compounds using the electrodeposition in molten salts, more particularly molten alkali fluorides. The interest in this process is to obtain new materials for high technology, particularly the compounds of reactive components such as actinides, rare earth and refractory metals. Two ways of preparation are considered: (i) electrocoating of the more reactive metal on a cathode made of the noble one and reaction between the two metals in contact, and (ii) electrocoating on an inert cathode of the intermetallic compound by coreduction of the ions of each elements. The kinetic is controlled by the reaction at the electrolyte interface. A wide bibliographic survey on the preparation of various compounds (intermetallic compounds, borides, carbides…) is given and a special attention is paid to the own experience of the authors in the preparation of these compounds and interpretation of their results

    Subjective Postural Vertical and Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS)

    ObjectiveThe origin of the AIS is unknown. Several studies in AIS have shown disturbances of orthostatic postural control and somatosensory modality. The orthostatic postural control is the ability to organize the upright position on the earth-vertical, by multisensory central integration, especially somatosensory information. Our hypothesis is that the somatosensory disturbances in the AIS involve change in the organization of orthostatic postural control, around an erroneous central representation of verticality. Our objective is to test, in the AIS, the existence of a disturbance of the somatosensory modality in orthostatic postural control by measuring the Subjective Postural Vertical (SPV).MethodsUncontrolled preliminary study on 8 adolescents with SIA (7 girls, 13.8±0.83 years, 38.8±10.4°angle). Test=SPV measurement, vision obscured, head-trunk-members strapped, sitting on a seat, fixed to a German vertical wheel athletic gymnastics (external diameter: 1.90 m), with electronic inclinometer that measures the rotational tilt of the seat, with reference to the gravitational vertical. From 45° inclination, the subject is tilted (1°/sec) and evaluates the alignment with the vertical gravitational.ResultsAIS SPV=7.48±4.86° with a tilt predominance to the right. It is impossible to realize statistical evaluation in this preliminary study. Our results are comparable with those reported in pusher patient.DiscussionThis preliminary study shows a disturbance in the assessment of SPV in the AIS.     Phase diagram of neutron-rich nuclear matter and its impact on astrophysics

    Dense matter as it can be found in core-collapse supernovae and neutron stars is expected to exhibit different phase transitions which impact the matter composition and equation of state, with important consequences on the dynamics of core-collapse supernova explosion and on the structure of neutron stars. In this paper we will address the specific phenomenology of two of such transitions, namely the crust-core solid-liquid transition at sub-saturation density, and the possible strange transition at super-saturation density in the presence of hyperonic degrees of freedom. Concerning the neutron star crust-core phase transition at zero and finite temperature, it will be shown that, as a consequence of the presence of long-range Coulomb interactions, the equivalence of statistical ensembles is violated and a clusterized phase is expected which is not accessible in the grand-canonical ensemble. A specific quasi-particle model will be introduced to illustrate this anomalous thermodynamics and some quantitative results relevant for the supernova dynamics will be shown. The opening of hyperonic degrees of freedom at higher densities corresponding to the neutron stars core modifies the equation of state.     Digital microscopy: A useful technique for measuring root elongation in solution

    Decreased root elongation and rupture of outer cells, major effects of soluble aluminum (Al), may be studied using digital microscopy with little interference by the experimental technique. Single roots of 3-d-old mungbean (Vigna radiata L.) or soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) seedlings were marked with activated charcoal particles and grown for ca. 2 h in 500 mL 1 mM CaCl solution at pH 6, followed by the imposition of an Al treatment. A digital image at 25-time magnification was recorded every 5 min for up to 7 h. Examination of the digital images showed that Al exerted its rhizotoxic effects rapidly (ca. 20-50 min) by reducing cell expansion in the elongation zone. Rupture of epidermal and outer cortical cells occurred later (after≥4 h) and closer to the root tip. Digital microscopy has a number of inherent benefits and problems, but is overall a valuable technique that may find wide use in studies on root growth

    PublishedJournal ArticleFusarium Ear Blight is a destructive fungal disease of cereals including wheat and can contaminate the crop with various trichothecene mycotoxins. This investigation has produced a new β-glucuronidase (GUS) reporter strain that facilitates the quick and easy assessment of plant infection. The constitutively expressed gpdA:GUS strain of Fusarium graminearum was used to quantify the overall colonisation pattern. Histochemical and biochemical approaches confirmed, in susceptible wheat ear infections, the presence of a substantial phase of symptomless fungal growth. Separate analyses demonstrated that there was a reduction in the quantity of physiologically active hyphae as the wheat ear infection proceeded. A simplified linear system of rachis infection was then utilised to evaluate the expression of several TRI genes by RT-qPCR. Fungal gene expression at the advancing front of symptomless infection was compared with the origin of infection in the rachis. This revealed that TRI gene expression was maximal at the advancing front and supports the hypothesis that the mycotoxin deoxynivalenol plays a role in inhibiting plant defences in advance of the invading intercellular hyphae.     Weak and strong fillability of higher dimensional contact manifolds

    For contact manifolds in dimension three, the notions of weak and strong symplectic fillability and tightness are all known to be inequivalent. We extend these facts to higher dimensions: in particular, we define a natural generalization of weak fillings and prove that it is indeed weaker (at least in dimension five),while also being obstructed by all known manifestations of "overtwistedness". We also find the first examples of contact manifolds in all dimensions that are not symplectically fillable but also cannot be called overtwisted in any reasonable sense. These depend on a higher-dimensional analogue of Giroux torsion, which we define via the existence in all dimensions of exact symplectic manifolds with disconnected contact boundary.Comment: 68 pages, 5 figures. v2: Some attributions clarified, and other minor edits. v3: exposition improved using referee's comments.
