Given a definably amenable approximate subgroup AA of a (local) group in some first-order structure, there is a type-definable subgroup HH normalised by AA and contained in A4A^4 such that every definable superset of HH has positive measure

    Almost-Bayesian Quadratic Persuasion (Extended Version)

In this article, we relax the Bayesianity assumption in the now-traditional model of Bayesian Persuasion introduced by Kamenica & Gentzkow. Unlike preexisting approaches -- which have tackled the possibility of the receiver (Bob) being non-Bayesian by considering that his thought process is not Bayesian yet known to the sender (Alice), possibly up to a parameter -- we let Alice merely assume that Bob behaves 'almost like' a Bayesian agent, in some sense, without resorting to any specific model. Under this assumption, we study Alice's strategy when both utilities are quadratic and the prior is isotropic. We show that, contrary to the Bayesian case, Alice's optimal response may not be linear anymore. This fact is unfortunate as linear policies remain the only ones for which the induced belief distribution is known. What is more, evaluating linear policies proves difficult except in particular cases, let alone finding an optimal one. Nonetheless, we derive bounds that prove linear policies are near-optimal and allow Alice to compute a near-optimal linear policy numerically. With this solution in hand, we show that Alice shares less information with Bob as he departs more from Bayesianity, much to his detriment.Comment: This version extends the article submitted to the IEEE Transactions on Automatic Contro

A straightforward route to tetrachloroauric acid from gold metal and molecular chlorine for nanoparticle synthesis

© 2015 by the authors; licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. Aqueous solutions of tetrachloroauric acid of high purity and stability were synthesised using the known reaction of gold metal with chlorine gas. The straightforward procedure developed here allows the resulting solution to be used directly for gold nanoparticle synthesis. The procedure involves bubbling chlorine gas through pure water containing a pellet of gold. The reaction is quantitative and progressed at a satisfactory rate at 50 °C. The gold(III) chloride solutions produced by this method show no evidence of returning to metallic gold over at least twelve months. This procedure also provides a straightforward method to determine the concentration of the resulting solution using the initial mass of gold and volume of water

Introducing Exercise and Home Safety Check to Decrease Falls in Older Adults

    Get PDF
The lack of education related to causes of, complications from, and interventions for falls is associated with the high rate of falls and fall-related injuries in older adults (OAs) beginning at age 65. The purpose of this project was to develop a fall prevention program that included components of the Stopping Elderly Accidents Deaths & Injuries Algorithm to increase fall prevention awareness and reduce falls in OAs at one community senior center. The project practice question asked whether introducing a fall prevention program that focused on exercise and home safety checks to educate OAs could decrease the rate of falls. The development of the fall prevention program was guided by the Roy Adaptation Model and The Health Belief Model. The sources of evidence were acquired from the Walden University databases and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website. The education workshop was held for 1-hour. The pretest and posttest design utilized the Fall Risk Self-Assessment 12-Item Questionnaire results for de-identified data collection from 30 OAs. The project results, analyzed using descriptive statistics, found that there were only 2 occurrences in the month following the fall prevention program, a decrease from 15 for the year before the program. Results showed that a fall prevention program focused on exercise and a home safety check demonstrated a trend in decreasing the rate of falls. Continuing to monitor the fall rate over the next year will determine the long-term effectiveness of the educational program. The social change implications are for community senior centers to provide an evidence-based fall prevention program that decreases the rate of falls in OAs to enhance their quality of life

A poorly institutionalized party system and a high volatility of the electorate is the setting in which Peruvian elections have been developed for decades.
