An original framework for understanding human actions and body language by using deep neural networks
The evolution of both fields of Computer Vision (CV) and Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) has allowed the development of efficient automatic systems for the analysis of people's behaviour.
By studying hand movements it is possible to recognize gestures, often used by people to communicate information in a non-verbal way.
These gestures can also be used to control or interact with devices without physically touching them. In particular, sign language and semaphoric hand gestures are the two foremost areas of interest due to their importance in Human-Human Communication (HHC) and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), respectively.
While the processing of body movements play a key role in the action recognition and affective computing fields. The former is essential to understand how people act in an environment, while the latter tries to interpret people's emotions based on their poses and movements;
both are essential tasks in many computer vision applications, including event recognition, and video surveillance.
In this Ph.D. thesis, an original framework for understanding Actions and body language is presented. The framework is composed of three main modules: in the first one, a Long Short Term Memory Recurrent Neural Networks (LSTM-RNNs) based method for the Recognition of Sign Language and Semaphoric Hand Gestures is proposed; the second module presents a solution based on 2D skeleton and two-branch stacked LSTM-RNNs for action recognition in video sequences; finally, in the last module, a solution for basic non-acted emotion recognition by using 3D skeleton and Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) is provided.
The performances of RNN-LSTMs are explored in depth, due to their ability to model the long term contextual information of temporal sequences, making them suitable for analysing body movements.
All the modules were tested by using challenging datasets, well known in the state of the art, showing remarkable results compared to the current literature methods
Cross-collaborative supply chains. How logistics services contribute to social responsibility.
Abstract
Purpose - The collaboration between profit and nonprofit entities has become a burning topic in
supply chain management studies and corporate strategies. The worldâs largest logistics service
providers (LSPs) have been developing several practices improving social responsibility while
collaborating with nonprofit actors. In particular, their core competences and offered services
become extremely relevant in the context of humanitarian logistics initiatives. A key purpose of
this article is to examine the projects currently undertaken by LSPs in humanitarian logistics.
Methodology/Approach - This research follows a qualitative approach based on multiple case
studies.
Findings - The paper provides an overview of the leading LSPsâ involvement in humanitarian
logistics and presents an analysis of their current âbest practicesâ services in disaster relief with
high impact in terms of social responsibility.
Research Limitations/implications - There has been increased interest on the part of international
academic and professional communities in humanitarian logistics. This study constitutes
a platform for benchmarking analysis of logistics services to assure effective implementation of
social responsibility principles.
Originality/Value of paper - Humanitarian logistics is a rather new field in logistics management.
This paper addresses the innovative socially responsible initiatives undertaken by the
main international LSPs in the area of humanitarian logistics.

A Device for Respiratory Monitoring during Nutritive Sucking: Response to Neonatal Breathing Patterns
The quantitative monitoring of breathing, sucking, and swallowing is required to predict newborns' neurodevelopmental outcomes. In particular, the coordination of breathing timing with respect to sucking cycle is crucial. In this work, we present the characterization of a low-cost flowmeter designed for noninvasive recording of breathing pattern during bottle feeding. The transducer is designed to be integrated on a commercial feeding bottle also instrumented with a system for sucking monitoring. The flowmeter consists of two transistors (hot bodies) supplied at constant current, which are placed in a duct used to convey the inspiratory and expiratory flow coming from the newborn's nostrils. The transducer design, its static calibration, and its response time are discussed. Moreover, a custom-made active lung simulator was used to perform a feasibility assessment of the proposed flowmeter for respiratory monitoring of neonatal respiratory patterns. The flowmeter has a discrimination threshold <0.5 L·minâ1and a response time of347±12âms. The breathing period estimated by the proposed transducer was compared with the one measured by a high performance flowmeter, used as reference: the mean absolute error was <11%. Sustainable supply chain management needs sustainable logistics services. The strategic role played by logistics service providers
Purpose â The purpose of this research is to examine the concept of sustainable service co-creation
in triadic business relationships in logistics and supply chain management. More companies seek to
develop sustainable solutions that would not be sustainable exclusively for themselves but for the
supply chain they belong to. In doing that â especially when dealing with services â they may need
the external support from logistics service providers (LSPs). This paper aims to explore the
innovative initiatives undertaken by LSPs in triadic relationship management with their customers
and suppliers while co-creating sustainable services along the supply chain.
Design/methodology/approach â To investigate the research question, a systematic literature
review and empirical exploratory investigation through case study will be conducted adopting the
qualitative methodology, to explore trends and evolving paradigms.
Findings â A literature review conducted in this paper enriches existing literature through an
integration of sustainability in a viable system approach and logistics service provision, in
particular, it investigates the ways in which sustainability is achieved. It is assumed that
the triadic relationship among an LSP and its customers and suppliers requires significant
modifications in collaboration and an innovative approach in operating procedures.
Research limitations/implications â This paper is an exploratory study and limited in its scope to
an example of a relationship that focuses mainly on three actors: the supplier, the LSP and the
customer. However, it could be extended in terms of numbers of case studies investigated.
Practical implications â The implications arising from the literature and the empirical research
offer a range of current sustainable practices in the services sector. This could be a starting point for
other research and company activities.
Originality/value â There is little research that addresses the issue of sustainability and logistics
service providers simultaneously, hence the present paper is meant to fill the gap by providing a
foundation which actors of different supply chains could use as a benchmark. This study gives
evidence of how logistics services may contribute to sustainable development.

Trumped: How Donald J. Trump Defied the Odds and Won the Presidency
Against all odds, Donald J. Trump shocked the world when he won the 2016 presidential election and became the 45th President of the United States. Few foresaw such a victory for the Republicans; it was widely believed among political scientists, election analysts, media pundits, and reportedly even Trump himself that victory would ultimately go to the Democratic party. So how and why did he win? We examine the multitude of factors that contributed to his electoral victory, including his iconic âMake America Great Againâ campaign, how his policies resonated with voters (as well as his primary opponentâs policies), and shifts in votersâ party preferences prompted by racial diversity. Our findings indicate that his campaign was boosted most by strategically using social media, having a message that resonated with supporters of the rising Populist movement, and aggressively campaigning in swing states. We also found that his primary opponent, Hillary Clinton, failed to attract key swing voters, many of which instead voted for Trump. Finally, we found that diversity increases Democratic or Republican party support among particular social groups based on the level of diversity in an area, thus prompting some of the unexpected electoral outcomes of the election.https://engagedscholarship.csuohio.edu/u_poster_2018/1009/thumbnail.jp
