    Polar supermultiplets, Hermitian symmetric spaces and hyperkahler metrics

    We address the construction of four-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric nonlinear sigma models on tangent bundles of arbitrary Hermitian symmetric spaces starting from projective superspace. Using a systematic way of solving the (infinite number of) auxiliary field equations along with the requirement of supersymmetry, we are able to derive a closed form for the Lagrangian on the tangent bundle and to dualize it to give the hyperkahler potential on the cotangent bundle. As an application, the case of the exceptional symmetric space E_6/SO(10) \times U(1) is explicitly worked out for the first time.Comment: 17 page

    Exercise classification using CNN with image frames produced from time-series motion data

    Exercise support systems for the elderly have been developed and some were equipped with a motion sensor to evaluate their exercise motion. Normally, it provides three-dimensional time-series data of over 20 joints. In this study, we propose to apply Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) methodology to the motion evaluation. The method converts the motion data of one exercise interval into one gray scale image. From simulation results, the CNN was possible to classify the images into specified motions

    Sodium benzoate attenuates 2,8-dihydroxyadenine nephropathy by inhibiting monocyte/macrophage TNF-α expression

    Sodium benzoate (SB), a known D-amino acid oxidase (DAO) enzyme inhibitor, has an anti-inflammatory effect, although its role in renal damage has not been explored. 2,8-dihydroxyadenine crystal induced chronic kidney disease, in which TNF-α is involved in the pathogenesis, was established by oral adenine administration in C57BL/6JJcl mice (AdCKD) with or without SB to investigate its renal protective effects. SB significantly attenuated AdCKD by decreasing serum creatinine and urea nitrogen levels, and kidney interstitial fibrosis and tubular atrophy scores. The survival of AdCKD mice improved 2.6-fold by SB administration. SB significantly decreased the number of infiltrating macrophages observed in the positive F4/80 immunohistochemistry area and reduced the expression of macrophage markers and inflammatory genes, including TNF-α, in the kidneys of AdCKD. Human THP-1 cells stimulated with either lipopolysaccharide or TNF-α showed increased expression of inflammatory genes, although this was significantly reduced by SB, confirming the anti-inflammatory effects of SB. SB exhibited renal protective effects in AdCKD in DAO enzyme deficient mice, suggesting that anti-inflammatory effect of SB was independent of DAO enzyme activity. Moreover, binding to motif DNA sequence, protein level, and mRNA level of NF-κB RelB were significantly inhibited by SB in AdCKD kidneys and lipopolysaccharide treated THP-1 cells, respectively. We report that anti-inflammatory property of SB is independent of DAO enzymatic activity and is associated with down regulated NF-κB RelB as well as its downstream inflammatory genes such as TNF-α in AdCKD

    Craniocervical junction abnormalities with atlantoaxial subluxation caused by ventral subluxation of C2 in a dog

    Craniocervical junction abnormalities with atlantoaxial subluxation caused by ventral subluxation of C2 were diagnosed in a 6-month-old female Pomeranian with tetraplegia as a clinical sign. Lateral survey radiography of the neck with flexion revealed  atlantoaxial subluxation with ventral subluxation of C2. Computed tomography revealed absence of dens and atlanto-occipital overlapping. Magnetic resonance imaging showed compression of the spinal cord and indentation of caudal cerebellum. The diagnosis was Chiari-like malformation, atlantoaxial subluxation with ventral displacement of C2,  atlanto-occipital overlapping, and syringomyelia. The dog underwent foramen magnum decompression, dorsal laminectomy of C1, and ventral fixation of the atlantoaxial joint. Soon after the operation, voluntary movements of the legs were recovered. Finally, the dog could stand and walk without assistance. The dog had complicated malformations at the craniocervical junction but foramen magnum decompression and dorsal  laminectomy for Chiari-like malformation, and ventral fixation for atlantoaxial  subluxation resulted in an excellent clinical outcome.Keywords: Atlantoaxial subluxation, Atlanto-occipital overlapping, Chiari-like  malformation, Craniocervical junction abnormalities, Foramen magnum  decompression

    Cryo-EM structure and rRNA modification sites of a plant ribosome

    [EN] Protein synthesis in crop plants contributes to the balance of food and fuel on our planet, which influences human metabolic activity and lifespan. Protein synthesis can be regulated with respect to changing environmental cues via the deposition of chemical modifications into rRNA. Here, we present the structure of a plant ribosome from tomato and a quantitative mass spectrometry analysis of its rRNAs. The study reveals fine features of the ribosomal proteins and 71 plant-specific rRNA modifications, and it re-annotates 30 rRNA residues in the available sequence. At the protein level, isoAsp is found in position 137 of uS11, and a zinc finger previously believed to be universal is missing from eL34, suggesting a lower effect of zinc deficiency on protein synthesis in plants. At the rRNA level, the plant ribosome differs markedly from its human counterpart with respect to the spatial distribution of modifications. Thus, it represents an additional layer of gene expression regulation, highlighting the molecular signature of a plant ribosome.     The Latent Risk of Acidosis in Commercially Available Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) Products: a Randomized Clinical Trial in Postoperative Patients

    To evaluate the latent risk of acidosis in commercially available total parenteral nutrition (TPN) products, three types of commercially available TPN products were compared in postoperative patients. Sixty-four hospitalized patients with gastro-intestinal disease who undertook curative gastro intestinal resection were studied prospectively and administered with TPN solutions. Three types of commercially available TPN products were assigned randomly to eligible patients. Serial studies of blood acid-base status, serum electrolytes, and urinary acid-base status were conducted in the three groups administered with different TPN solutions. Patients received appropriate electrolytic solutions on the operation day and TPN solution from 2 to 7 days after operation. There were no differences among any of the serum electrolytes in the three groups. In one group, urinary pH decreased slightly and urinary net acid excretion (NAE) increased significantly after administration. This TPN product contains about 40 mEq/L of non-metabolizable acid to avoid the Maillard reaction that produces a complex of glucose and amino acids. Urinary NAE did not change in the other two groups. These TPN products do not use non-metabolizable acid to adjust pH. The present results suggest that the non-metabolizable acid may be a risk factor of metabolic acidosis

    In-plane anisotropy of the single-qq and multiple-qq ordered phases in the antiferromagnetic metal CeRh2_2Si2_2 unveiled by the bulk measurements under uniaxial stress and neutron scattering

    We performed magnetization, resistivity, and neutron diffraction measurements under uniaxial stress applied along [1-10] direction on the tetragonal magnet CeRh2_2Si2_2 with commensurate magnetic orders. CeRh2_2Si2_2 has two successive antiferromagnetic (AF) orders in zero magnetic field. The high temperature phase (AF1 phase) has the magnetic modulation wave vector of q=(12,12,0)q = (\frac{1}{2}, \frac{1}{2}, 0), and the low temperature phase (AF2 phase) is characterized by the four qq-vectors of q=(12,12,0),(12,12,0),(12,12,12)q = (\frac{1}{2}, \frac{1}{2}, 0), (\frac{1}{2}, -\frac{1}{2}, 0), (\frac{1}{2}, \frac{1}{2}, \frac{1}{2}), and (12,12,12)(\frac{1}{2}, -\frac{1}{2}, \frac{1}{2}). By measuring the uniaxial stress dependence of the magnetization, resistivity and the intensities of magnetic Bragg reflections, we confirmed that the AF1 phase has the single-qq magnetic order with two-fold rotational symmetry and the AF2 phase has the multi-qq magnetic order with four-fold rotational symmetry. In order to understand the origin of multi-qq order of CeRh2_2Si2_2, we also performed inelastic neutron scattering measurement on the single crystal samples. We found a magnetic excitation at the transfer energy ω\hbar \omega \sim 8 meV. By applying the linear spin-wave theory, we found that the nearest and the next-nearest neighbor exchange interactions on the abab-plane, J1J_1 and J2J_2, are dominant in the AF2 phase. However, the J1J_1-J2J_2 model cannot lift the degeneracy between the single-qq (AF1) and multi-qq (AF2) phases. We suggest that it can be lifted by taking into account the biquadratic interaction derived from the perturbative expansion for the Kondo lattice Hamiltonian. [S. Hayami et al., Phys. Rev.     Optimum design of aluminum beverage can ends using structural optimization techniques

    金沢大学大学院自然科学研究科知的システム創成金沢大学工学部This paper has tried to apply the response surface approximate method in the structural optimization techniques to develop aluminum beverage can ends. Geometrical parameters of the end shell are selected as design variables. The analysis points in the design space are assigned using an orthogonal array in the design-of-experiment technique. Finite element analysis code is used to simulate the deforming behavior and to calculate buckling strength and central panel displacement of the end shell under internal pressure. On the basis of the numerical analysis results, the response surface of the buckling strength and panel growth are approximated in terms of the design variables. By using a numerical optimization program, the weight of the end shell is minimized subject to constraints of the buckling strength, panel growth suppression and other design requirements. A numerical example on 202 end shell optimization problem has been shown in this paper. © 2005 American Institute of Physics
