    An efficient synthesis of cyclohexane- and cyclopentane-1,3-dione-2-spirocyclopropanes from 1,3-cycloalkanediones using sulfonium salts was achieved. The reaction of 1,3-cycloalkanediones with (1-aryl-2-bromoethyl)dimethylsulfonium bromides and powdered K2CO3 in EtOAc provided the corresponding spirocyclopropanes in high yields.     MIXED MODES INTERLAMINAR FRACTURE TOUGHNESS OF CFRP LAMINATES TOUGHENED WITH CNF INTERLAYER

    In the present paper, the influence of carbon nanofiber on interlaminar fracture toughness of CFRP investigated using MMB(Mixed Mode Bending) tests. Vapor grown carbon fiber VGCF and VGCF-S, and multi-walled carbon nanotube MWNT-7 has been employed for the toughener of the interlayer on the CFRP laminates. In order to evaluate the fracture toughness and mixed mode ratio of it, double cantilever beam (DCB) tests, end notched fracture (ENF) tests and mixed mode bending (MMB) tests have been carried out. Boundary element analysis was applied to the CFRP model to compute the interlaminar fracture toughness, where extrapolation method was used to determine the fracture toughness and mixed mode ratio. The interlaminar fracture toughness and mixed mode ratio can be extrapolated by stress distribution in the vicinity of the crack tip of the CFRP laminate. It was found that the interlaminar fracture toughness of the CFRP laminates was improved inserting the interlayer made by carbon nanofiber especially in the region where shear mode deformation is dominant.ArticleACTA MECHANICA SOLIDA SINICA. 25(3):321-330 (2012)journal articl

    This paper verified the stability of poly-L-Lactic/polyglycolic acid bone fixation devices in Le Fort I osteotomy. The subjects of the study were 40 patients (33 females and 7 males) who underwent Le Fort I osteotomy with fixation by poly-L-Lactic/polyglycolic acid bone fixation devices (plates and screws). The subjects were divided into two groups according to their skeletal deformity pattern: skeletal Class II and Class III. Lateral cephalometric radiographs were measured and compared for the absolute magnitude of skeletal relapse from pretreatment to immediately postoperative to 6 months and 1 year after surgery. The X-axis applied the Sella-Nasion line, and the Y-axis passed through Sella perpendicular to the X-axis. The evaluation factors were A-point, Prosthion, and posterior nasal spine (PNS). In both groups, statistical analysis showed no significant differences in postoperative skeletal stability. In conclusion, poly-L-Lactic/polyglycolic acid bone fixation devices can provide postoperative stability for Le Fort I osteotomy

Levels of cell apoptosis were measured using an Annexin V-FITC Apoptosis Detection Kit (BioVision, Milpitas, CA, USA), according to the manufacturer’s instructions. For these analyses, SH-SY5Y cells were seeded into 6-well plates (3 × 105 cells/well) and incubated overnight. The following day, cells were treated with the indicated concentrations of the appropriate drug(s) for varying lengths of time and harvested by centrifugation at 1200 rpm for 3 min. The culture supernatants were discharged, and the resulting pellets were resuspended in a mixture comprised of 500 μl binding buffer, 5 μl Annexing V-FITC, and 5 μl propidium iodide (PI; 50 μg/ml) for 5 min at room temperature in the dark and analyzed using a FACSCalibur flow cytometer (BD Biosciences, San Jose, CA, USA).     Detection of the Onset of Ischemia and Carcinogenesis by Hypoxia-Inducible Transcription Factor-Based In Vivo Bioluminescence Imaging

    An animal model for the early detection of common fatal diseases such as ischemic diseases and cancer is desirable for the development of new drugs and treatment strategies. Hypoxia-inducible factor 1 (HIF-1) is a transcription factor that regulates oxygen homeostasis and plays key roles in a number of diseases, including cancer. Here, we established transgenic (Tg) mice that carry HRE/ODD-luciferase (HOL) gene, which generates bioluminescence in an HIF-1-dependent manner and was successfully used in this study to monitor HIF-1 activity in ischemic tissues. To monitor carcinogenesis in vivo, we mated HOL mice with rasH2 Tg mice, which are highly sensitive to carcinogens and are used for short-term carcinogenicity assessments. After rasH2-HOL Tg mice were treated with N-methyl-N-nitrosourea, bioluminescence was detected noninvasively as early as 9 weeks in tissues that contained papillomas and malignant lesions. These results suggest that the Tg mouse lines we established hold significant potential for monitoring the early onset of both ischemia and carcinogenesis and that these lines will be useful for screening chemicals for carcinogenic potential
