Marzena Starnawsk

The aim of this paper is to present how we can approach and explore the field of entrepreneurship phenomenon in an alternative way. We do this by employing constructivist philosophical position than is gaining more acceptance in business and management research. We hope to outline how we can approach topic of entrepreneurship using alternative, not mainstream method, This is done with the use of visual data gathered among Gdansk University of Technology among students who were asked to present their constructions of an entrepreneur. The data presented here is part of a wider research project, focused on semiotics of symbols present in the pictorial representations of entrepreneurs. When an individual is being described as ‘entrepreneurial’ or ‘enterprising’ this is usually taken as a compliment. Nevertheless, these words have different meanings for different people. One of the first academics who encompassed the negative notions of being enterprising in the field of entrepreneurship was Baumol (1990) who analyzed perceptions of entrepreneurs from historical perspective. He has distinguished three types of entrepreneurship: productive, unproductive and destructive. The alternative understandings and meanings of entrepreneurship have recently emerged in the field of entrepreneurship, especially the ones situated in the interpretative paradigm. They have been explained and explored under the theme of ‘entrepreneurship beyond the boundaries’

Using case study analysis based on in-depth interviews we aim to extend the entrepreneurship research in transition context in Poland. Entrepreneurship models build in America and Western Europe do not picture the specifics of entrepreneurship in transition economies. The author reviews concepts and theses on entrepreneurship in this context and argues that cultural heritage from the previous socio-economic system has created population of entrepreneurs that will not necessarily disperse with the next generations

Revising Entrepreneurial Orientation Construct in a Social Enterprise

Entrepreneurial behavior and entrepreneurial orientation (EO) have received significant scholarly attention in entrepreneurship and management research, but mainly in the commercial context. However, some attempts discussing such behavior and EO among non-profit organizations, but limited in the social enterprise context. The literature argues that EO is higher in such contexts (Zahra, Gedajlovic, Neubaum & Shulman, 2009; Lumpkin, Moss, Grass, Kato & Amezcua, 2013). Also, some new EO dimensions are proposed, at the same time existing EO dimensions are redefined. Based on this limited literature, the author undertakes an overview of existing work on EO dimensions and analyses how EO can be reconstructed and redefined in the social enterprise context. New, additional EO dimensions are compiled and discussed: cooperation capacity, agility, and persistence. In the light of anecdotal, empirical efforts on EO construct and relationship to performance among social enterprises, it seems that EO needs more revision and theoretical discussion, combined with inductive and qualitative studies. This change can provide more insights into the nature of individual dimensions and their relevance for social and business performance of social enterprises. It also poses the question whether EO dimensions should go beyond the split between what is commercial and social in social enterprises, and encompass both or whether focus separately on each of the two

In this paper we make an attempt distinguishing challenges in SE research agenda in Polish and beyond. We identify what can impede the development of this area in Polish discourse These challenges vary in scope. They involve the dilemma between either economics or management as disciplinary settings. Also the understanding of social economy as such determines the chaos. Additionally, divergences in paradigms where researchers situate their research projects as well as variety and scarcity of available data on SE in the literature are important here. Most of all definitional debate of what entrepreneurship and so SE is determine the existing difficulties. We resume the discussion by returning to the interdisciplinary nature of the field and propose for further studies to be set in the area of management sciences
