    Identifying Signs of Human Trafficking in Healthcare Settings: A Literature Review

    Human trafficking is the commercial trade of human beings for profit, and it is the fastest growing criminal industry in the world. There are an estimated 40 million people that are trapped in this modern day slavery (National Human Trafficking Hotline, 2020). In the United States, over 86% of trafficking survivors reported accessing healthcare at some point during their trafficking situation (Lederer & Wetzel, 2014). Healthcare workers are on the front lines of battling this crime, as they have a vital role in identifying signs of trafficking in their patients. This review evaluates ways in which healthcare workers can screen for and identify patients trapped in this modern day slavery in order to utilize trauma-informed care and refer potential victims to the appropriate resources

    Intracortical Microstimulation Maps of Motor, Somatosensory, and Posterior Parietal Cortex in Tree Shrews (Tupaia Belangeri) Reveal Complex Movement Representations

    Long-train intracortical microstimulation (LT-ICMS) is a popular method for studying the organization of motor and posterior parietal cortex (PPC) in mammals. In primates, LT-ICMS evokes both multi-joint and multiple body-part movements in primary motor, premotor, and posterior parietal cortex. In rodents LT-ICMS evokes complex movements of a single limb in motor cortex. Unfortunately, very little is known about motor/PPC organization in other mammals. Tree shrews are closely related to both primates and rodents and could provide insights into the evolution of complex movement domains in primates. The present study investigated the extent of cortex in which movements could be evoked with ICMS and the characteristics of movements elicited using both short-train (ST) and LT ICMS in tree shrews. We demonstrate that LT-ICMS and ST-ICMS maps are similar, with the movements elicited with ST-ICMS being truncated versions of those elicited with LT-ICMS. In addition, LT-ICMS evoked complex movements within motor cortex similar to those in rodents. More complex movements involving multiple body parts such as the hand and mouth were also elicited in motor cortex and PPC, as in primates. Our results suggest that complex movement networks present in PPC and motor cortex were present in mammals prior to the emergence of primates

    Service Learning as Scholarship in Teacher Education

    This article describes how two teacher education service-learning programs illustrate alternative interpretations of scholarship. A tutoring-mentoring program in a teaching oriented masters institution and a motor skill development program in a land grant doctoral-research institution are described relative to how each illustrates forms of scholarship as interpreted by Boyer ( 1990). We discuss how these forms of scholarship the scholarship of discovery, integration, teaching, and application--relate to stated institutional mission and evaluation practices. Service-learning experiences for preservice teachers can have the multiple benefits of promoting an ethic of service and social responsibility, demonstrating excellence in teacher education, and exemplifying scholarly endeavors

It is the ability to create pictures, to hear sounds, to smell odors, to taste, and to feel in one's mind as one reads. All these factors contribute to the varying degrees of mental imagery possessed by different individuals. It may be assumed that people visualize when they read. A writer may give a description of a person or a place, and the reader can recreate the scene in his own mind. The reader's picture may be clear or it may be vague.     Look, Think, Act: Using Critical Action Research to Sustain Reform in Complex Teaching/Learning Ecologies

    This paper argues that educators interested in sustainability should look to complexity science for guiding principles. When we view our classrooms and campuses as living, dynamic ecologies, we can, as insiders, make sense of what might otherwise seem chaotic or meaningless. This perspective enables us not only to describe and explain what is happening around us, but also to use our findings to influence emerging patterns across our classrooms, campuses, or our larger communities. We suggest that educators use a Look, Think, Act cycle recommended by Ernie Stringer to encourage and support sustainable school reform

    Candidate Success and edTPA: Looking at the Data

    This descriptive study looks at the correlations between Teacher Performance Assessment (edTPA) data and numerous program data points, including GPA, major GPA, and benchmark assignment scores, gathered in an Early Childhood Education (ECE) program. Previous studies have looked to correlate grade point average (GPA) with pre-service teacher performance; however, correlating students’ benchmark assessment scores and student performance on edTPA has not been attempted. This study looks to determine the relationships between overall GPA, major GPA (Early Childhood Education), and edTPA performance (overall score and task scores). Relationships were also investigated between program benchmark assessments (case study, family culture project, integrated investigation unit, student teaching evaluation) and edTPA performance (overall score and task scores). Findings suggest a relationship between overall GPA and edTPA overall score as well as GPA and individual edTPA task scores. In exploring benchmark assignments, correlations were found between the Integrated Investigation Unit and overall edTPA score and edTPA Task 1 and 3 scores
