    Wind-Tunnel Investigation of the Lift Characteristics of an NACA 27-212 Airfoil Equipped with Two Types of Flap, Special Report

    An investigation has been made in the NACA 7- by 10-foot wind tunnel of a large chord NACA 27-212 airfoil with a 20% chord split flap and with two arrangements of a 25.66% chord slotted flap to determine the section lift characteristics as affected by flap deflection for the split flap and as affected by flap deflection, flap position, and slot shape for the slotted flap. For the two arrangements of the slotted flap, the flap positions for maximum section lift are given. Comparable data on the NACA 23012 airfoil equipped with similar flaps are also given. On the basis of maximum section lift coefficient, the slotted flap with an easy slot entry was slightly better than either the split flap or the slotted flap with a sharp slot entry. With both types of flap the decrease in the angle of attack, for maximum section lift coefficient, with flap deflection is large for the NACA 27-212 airfoil as compared with the NACA 23012 airfoil. Also with both flaps, the maximum section lift coefficient obtained with flaps is much lower for the NACA 27-212 airfoil than for the NACA 23012 airfoil

    A Randomized Clinical Trial of a Money Management Intervention for Veterans With Psychiatric Disabilities

    OBJECTIVE: The study evaluated an intervention to help veterans with psychiatric disabilities, who face a unique set of challenges concerning money management. METHODS: A randomized clinical trial was conducted of a brief (one to three hours) psychoeducational, recovery-oriented money management intervention called tepsforAchievingFinancialEmpowerment(teps for Achieving Financial Empowerment (AFE). RESULTS: Analyses revealed no main effects on outcomes of random assignment to AFE(N=67)oracontrolconditionconsistingofusualcare(N=77).VeteranswhoreportedusingAFE (N=67) or a control condition consisting of usual care (N=77). Veterans who reported using AFE skills showed significantly lower impulsive buying, more responsible spending, higher rates of engaging in vocational activities, and greater number of work hours compared with veterans in the control condition. CONCLUSIONS: Findings have clinical implications for case management services involving informal money management assistance. Offering veterans with psychiatric disabilities a one-time money management intervention is unlikely to lead to substantial changes. Results imply that efforts to improve psychosocial outcomes among veterans must not only teach but also increase use of money management skills

    Description and evaluation of a ventriculo-coronary artery bypass device that provides bi-directional coronary flow

    Objective: The objective of this study was to assess acute patency of a new myocardial revascularization device that connects the left ventricular cavity to a coronary artery (termed ventriculo-coronary artery bypass, VCAB) thereby providing proximal and distal blood flow from the site of the anastomosis. Methods: A device made of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene and low density polyethylene was implanted from the base of the left ventricle to the mid left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD) in 11 juvenile domestic pigs using a beating heart approach. Flow rates were measured in the distal LAD before and after implant using ultrasonic flow techniques, and patency was assessed at explant at either 2 or 4 weeks post-implantation. Myocardial perfusion using positron emission tomography (PET) was assessed in a separate set of pigs (n=2) revascularized by VCAB 2 weeks post-implant. Results: Net forward flow distal to the implanted device was 73±15% of native LAD flow. PET demonstrated that the target myocardium was perfused at 85% of that seen in the remote, control myocardium. Device patency rate was 80% (4/5) at 2 weeks in one set of pigs and 83% (5/6) at 4 weeks in a second set of pigs. Histologic analysis showed formation of neointima along the extraventricular segment of the device. Conclusions: This study demonstrates the promise of perfusing ischemic myocardium using a VCAB approach with a device that provides blood flow both proximal and distal to the anastomosis.     FAME is designed to perform an all-sky, astrometric survey with unprecedented accuracy. It will create a rigid astrometric catalog of 4x10^7 stars with 5 < m_V < 15. For bright stars, 5 < m_V < 9, FAME will determine positions and parallaxes accurate to < 50 microarcseconds, with proper motion errors < 50 microarcseconds/year. For fainter stars, 9 < m_V < 15, FAME will determine positions and parallaxes accurate to < 500 microarcseconds, with proper motion errors < 500 microarcseconds/year.     A Complete Triad of Zero-Valent 17-Electron Monoradicals of Group 7 Elements Stabilized by m-Terphenyl Isocyanides

    The first consistent series of mononuclear 17-electron complexes of three Group 7 elements has been isolated in crystalline form and studied by X-ray diffraction and spectroscopic methods. The paramagnetic compounds have a composition of [M0(CO)(CNp-F-ArDarF2)4] (M = Mn (1), Tc (3), Re (6); ArDArF2 = 2,6-(3,5-(CF3)2C6H3)2­C6H3)) and are stabilized by four sterically encumbering isocyanides, which prevent the metalloradicals from dimerization. They have a square pyramidal structure with the carbonyl ligands as apexes. The frozen-solution EPR spectra of the rhenium and technetium compounds are clearly anisotropic with large 99Tc and 185,187Re hyperfine interactions for one component.     Phototriggered Secretion of Membrane Compartmentalized Bioactive Agents

    A strategy for the light-activated release of bioactive compounds (BODIPY, colchicine, paclitaxel, and methotrexate) from membrane-enclosed depots is described. We have found that membrane-permeable bioagents can be rendered membrane impermeable by covalent attachment to cobalamin (Cbl) through a photocleavable linker. These Cbl-bioagent conjugates are imprisoned within lipid-enclosed compartments in the dark, as exemplified by their retention in the interior of erythrocytes. Subsequent illumination drives the secretion of the bioactive species from red blood cells. Photorelease is triggered by wavelengths in the red, far-red, and near-IR regions, which can be pre-assigned by affixing a fluorophore with the desired excitation wavelength to the Cbl-bioagent conjugate. Pre-assigned wavelengths allow different biologically active compounds to be specifically and unambiguously photoreleased from common carriers

    Far-UV Absorption Lines in the Remnant of SN 1006

    We have obtained a far-ultraviolet spectrum (1150 - 1600 Ang.) of a hot subdwarf star behind the remnant of SN 1006 with the Faint Object Spectrograph (FOS) on the Hubble Space Telescope. The high-quality spectrum is used to test previous identifications of the strong absorption features discovered with the International Ultraviolet Explorer. These features have FWHM = 4000 (+/- 300) km/sec and are not at the rest wavelengths of known interstellar lines, as opposed to the broader (8000 km/sec FWHM) Fe II lines from the remnant centered at zero km/sec in near-UV FOS spectra. We confirm that the broad absorption features are principally due to redshifted Si II, Si III, and Si IV lines, which are centered at a radial velocity of 5100 (+/- 200) km/sec. The Si II 1260.4 profile is asymmetric, with a nearly flat core and sharp red wing, unlike the Si II 1526.7 and Si IV 1393.8, 1402.8 profiles. One possible explanation is additional absorption from another species. Previous work has suggested that S II 1250.6, 1253.8, 1259.5 at a radial velocity of 6000 km/sec is responsible, but this would require a sulfur to silicon abundance ratio that is at least a factor of ten higher than expected. Another possible explanation is that the Si II and Si IV profiles are intrinsically different, but this does not explain the symmetric (albeit weaker) Si II 1526.7 profile.Comment: 17 pages, Latex, 2 postscript figures; to appear in ApJ (Letters
