Direct visualisation of lipid bilayer cubic phases using Atomic Force Microscopy
Inverse bicontinuous cubic (Q(II)) phases are nanostructured materials formed by lipid self-assembly. We have successfully imaged thin films of hydrated Q(II) phases from two different systems using AFM. The images show periodic arrays of water channels with spacing and symmetry consistent with published SAXS data on the bulk materials
Recommendations for accelerating open preprint peer review to improve the culture of science
Peer review is an important part of the scientific process, but traditional peer review at journals is coming under increased scrutiny for its inefficiency and lack of transparency. As preprints become more widely used and accepted, they raise the possibility of rethinking the peer-review process. Preprints are enabling new forms of peer review that have the potential to be more thorough, inclusive, and collegial than traditional journal peer review, and to thus fundamentally shift the culture of peer review toward constructive collaboration. In this Consensus View, we make a call to action to stakeholders in the community to accelerate the growing momentum of preprint sharing and provide recommendations to empower researchers to provide open and constructive peer review for preprints

Sustainability in Publishing: An Open Access Publisher’s View
International audienceSustainability is an essential part of the work of publishers. Here, the view of an open access publisher, MDPI, is presented with regards to sustainability within publishing. MDPI’s understanding of sustainability is given and some of the concrete actions it leads to. These include supporting umbrella initiatives, exploring alternative business and editorial models, elements of open science, and ensuring the long-term sustainability of published content. Our aim is to demonstrate actions that could be taken by other publishers and to invite dialog with the broader research community for how a large open access publisher can contribute to a sustainable knowledge ecosystem
