Opposing shear senses in a subdetachment mylonite zone: Implications for core complex mechanics
[1] Global studies of metamorphic core complexes and lowâangle detachment faults have highlighted a fundamental problem: Since detachments excise crustal section, the relationship between the mylonitic rocks in their footwalls and the brittle deformation in their hanging walls is commonly unclear. Mylonites could either reflect ductile deformation related to exhumation along the detachment fault, or they could be a more general feature of the extending middle crust that has been âcaptured â by the detachment. In the first case we would expect the kinematics of the mylonite zone to mirror the sense of movement on the detachment; in the second case both the direction and sense of shear in the mylonites could be different. The northern Snake Range dĂ©collement (NSRD) is a classic Basin and Range detachment fault with a wellâdocumented topâeast of displacement. We present structural, paleo-magnetic, geochronological, and geothermometric evidence to suggest that the mylonite zone below the NSRD locally experienced phases of both east â and westâdirected shear, inconsistent with movement along a single detachment fault. We therefore propose that the footwall mylonites represent a predetachment dis-continuity in the middle crust that separated localized deformation above from distributed crustal flow below (localizedâdistributed transition (LDT)). The mylonites were subsequently captured by a moderately dipping brittle detachment that soled down to the middle crust and exhumed them around a rolling hinge into a subhorizontal orientation at the surface, produc-ing the presentâday NSRD. In this interpretation the brittle hanging wall represents a series of rotated upper crustal normal faults, whereas the mylonitic footwall represents one or more exhumed middl

Free Choice (FC) is an inference arising from the interaction between existential modals and disjunction. Schematically, a sentence of the form permitted(A or B) gives rise to the inference âAâ§âB. Many competing theories of FC have been proposed but they can be classified into two main groups: one group derives FC as an entailment, while the other derives it as an implicature. By contrast, Negative Free Choice (NFC), the corresponding inference from negated universal modals embedding conjunction, e.g., not(required(A and B)) to ÂŹâĄAâ§âĄB, has been discussed much less, and its existence has even been questioned in the recent literature. This paper reports on three experiments whose results provide clear evidence that NFC exists as an inference, but also indicate that NFC is far less robust than FC. This leaves us with two theoretical possibilities: the uniform approach, which comes in two versions, one deriving both FC and NFC as implicatures, and the other deriving both as entailments, and the hybrid approach that derives FC as an entailment and NFC as an implicature. We argue that the observed difference between FC and NFC is straightforwardly explained under the hybrid approach while it poses a challenge for the uniform approach. We end with a brief discussion of the options we see for the uniform approach and their further consequences
Experimental evidences of a large extrinsic spin Hall effect in AuW alloy
We report an experimental study of a gold-tungsten alloy (7% at. W
concentration in Au host) displaying remarkable properties for spintronics
applications using both magneto-transport in lateral spin valve devices and
spin-pumping with inverse spin Hall effect experiments. A very large spin Hall
angle of about 10% is consistently found using both techniques with the
reliable spin diffusion length of 2 nm estimated by the spin sink experiments
in the lateral spin valves. With its chemical stability, high resistivity and
small induced damping, this AuW alloy may find applications in the nearest
future
PILOT: a balloon-borne experiment to measure the polarized FIR emission of dust grains in the interstellar medium
Future cosmology space missions will concentrate on measuring the
polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background, which potentially carries
invaluable information about the earliest phases of the evolution of our
universe. Such ambitious projects will ultimately be limited by the sensitivity
of the instrument and by the accuracy at which polarized foreground emission
from our own Galaxy can be subtracted out. We present the PILOT balloon project
which will aim at characterizing one of these foreground sources, the
polarization of the dust continuum emission in the diffuse interstellar medium.
The PILOT experiment will also constitute a test-bed for using multiplexed
bolometer arrays for polarization measurements. We present the results of

Ordering intermetallic alloys by ion irradiation: a way to tailor magnetic media
Combining He ion irradiation and thermal mobility below 600K, we both trigger
and control the transformation from chemical disorder to order in thin films of
an intermetallic ferromagnet (FePd). Kinetic Monte Carlo simulations show how
the initial directional short range order determines order propagation.
Magnetic ordering perpendicular to the film plane was achieved, promoting the
initially weak magnetic anisotropy to the highest values known for FePd films.
This post-growth treatment should find applications in ultrahigh density

A protosolar nebula origin for the ices agglomerated by Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko
The nature of the icy material accreted by comets during their formation in
the outer regions of the protosolar nebula is a major open question in
planetary science. Some scenarios of comet formation predict that these bodies
agglomerated from crystalline ices condensed in the protosolar nebula.
Concurrently, alternative scenarios suggest that comets accreted amorphous ice
originating from the interstellar cloud or from the very distant regions of the
protosolar nebula. On the basis of existing laboratory and modeling data, we
find that the N/CO and Ar/CO ratios measured in the coma of the Jupiter
family comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko by the ROSINA instrument aboard the
European Space Agency's Rosetta spacecraft match those predicted for gases
trapped in clathrates. If these measurements are representative of the bulk
N/CO and Ar/CO ratios in 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, it implies that the
ices accreted by the comet formed in the nebula and do not originate from the
interstellar medium, supporting the idea that the building blocks of outer
solar system bodies have been formed from clathrates and possibly from pure
crystalline ices. Moreover, because 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko is impoverished
in Ar and N, the volatile enrichments observed in Jupiter's atmosphere
cannot be explained solely via the accretion of building blocks with similar
compositions and require an additional delivery source. A potential source may
be the accretion of gas from the nebula that has been progressively enriched in

Diversity with Universality
This paper investigates the âDiversityâ inferences (D-inferences) arising from disjunction embedded in the scope of a universal quantifier, e.g., Every X is A or B suggests Some Xs are A and Some Xs are B. It has previously been claimed (i) that D-inferences are independent from âNegative Universalâ inferences (NU-inferences), which are the negations of Every X is A and Every X is B, but (ii) that for disjunction in the scope of a universal modal the D-inferences cannot be observed independently of the NU-inferences ([3, 7, 9, 13]). Experiment 1 tested the availability of D-inferences in the absence of NU-inferences for the determiner every and the epistemic modal must. Experiment 2 followed up on Experiment 1 by testing the same two quantifiers, only this time the modal must expressed deontic necessity. The results show that, for both types of quantifiers, D-inferences could be derived independently of NU-inferences. While the results for every essentially replicate those reported in [7], the results for must are new and go against the aforementioned claim (ii). In addition, the response time results from both experiments show that D-inferences are associated with response delay effects in the opposite direction to those observed for regular scalar implicatures in similar tasks ([4, 5]). We argue that these findings about the time course of D-inferences raise a new challenge for an implicature-based approach to these inferences
