    A Nationwide Cross-Sectional Study

    This study aims to compare adequate fruit and vegetable (F&V) intake between immigrants and natives in Portugal, and to analyse factors associated with consumption of F&V among immigrants. Data from a population based cross-sectional study (2014) was used. The final sample comprised 17,410 participants (≥20 years old), of whom 7.4% were immigrants. Chi-squared tests and logistic regression models were conducted to investigate the association between adequate F&V intake, sociodemographic, anthropometric, and lifestyle characteristics. Adequate F&V intake was more prevalent among immigrants (21.1% (95% CI: 19.0⁻23.4)) than natives (18.5% (95% CI: 17.9⁻19.1)), (p = 0.000). Association between migrant status and adequate F&V intake was only evident for men: immigrants were less likely to achieve an adequate F&V intake (OR = 0.67, 95% CI = 0.66⁻0.68) when compared to Portuguese. Among immigrants, being female, older, with a higher education, and living in a low urbanisation area increased the odds of having F&V consumption closer to the recommendations. Adjusting for other factors, length of residence appears as a risk factor (15 or more years vs. 0⁻9 years: OR = 0.52, 95% CI = 0.50⁻0.53), (p = 0.000) for adequate F&V intake. Policies aiming to promote adequate F&V consumption should consider both populations groups, and gender-based strategies should address proper sociodemographic, anthropometric, and lifestyle determinants.publishersversionpublishe

    Differential mesenteric fat deposition in bovines fed on silage or concentrate is independent of glycerol membrane permeability

    © The Animal Consortium 2011In the meat industry, the manipulation of fat deposition in cattle is of pivotal importance to improve production efficiency, carcass composition and ultimately meat quality. There is an increasing interest in the identification of key factors and molecular mechanisms responsible for the development of specific fat depots. This study aimed at elucidating the influence of breed and diet on adipose tissue membrane permeability and fluidity and their interplay on fat deposition in bovines. Two Portuguese autochthonous breeds, Alentejana and Barrosã, recognized as late- and early-maturing breeds, respectively, were chosen to examine the effects of breed and diet on fat deposition and on adipose membrane composition and permeability. Twenty-four male bovines from these breeds were fed on silage-based or concentrate-based diets for 11 months. Animals were slaughtered to determine their live slaughter and hot carcass weights, as well as weights of subcutaneous and visceral adipose depots. Mesenteric fat depots were excised and used to isolate adipocyte membrane vesicles where cholesterol content, fatty acid profile as well as permeability and fluidity were determined. Total accumulation of neither subcutaneous nor visceral fat was influenced by breed. In contrast, mesenteric and omental fat depots weights were higher in concentrate-fed bulls relative to silage-fed animals. Membrane fluidity and permeability to water and glycerol in mesenteric adipose tissue were found to be independent of breed and diet. Moreover, the deposition of cholesterol and unsaturated fatty acids, which may influence membrane properties, were unchanged among experimental groups. Adipose membrane lipids from the mesenteric fat depot of ruminants were rich in saturated fatty acids, and unaffected by polyunsaturated fatty acids dietary levels. Our results provide evidence against the involvement of cellular membrane permeability to glycerol on fat accumulation in mesenteric fat tissue of concentrate-fed bovines, which is consistent with the unchanged membrane lipid profile found among experimental groups.This study was supported by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) through grant PTDC/CVT/2006/66114 and individual fellowships to Ana P.     Reemployment and substitution effects from increased activation: Evidence from times of crisis

    Although activation services such as monitoring, training, or job subsidies have been shown to increase exits from unemployment, there is little comprehensive evidence about the effects of activation during recessions. Here we evaluate a large activation programme introduced in Portugal in 2012, a time of very high unemployment. This programme required specific unemployment benefit recipients to meet jobcentre caseworkers and then participate in active labour market policies. Our analysis draws on rich longitudinal data, the programme’s focus on those unemployed for at least six months, and fuzzy regression discontinuity methods. We find that, despite the weak labour market, the programme is very successful as it doubles the monthly reemployment probability. The results are robust to a number of checks, including a falsification exercise based on pre-programme data and an analysis of non-employment and income effects. Moreover, in a novel IV approach using information on all unemployed, we find no evidence of substitution effects such as decreased transitions to employment amongst non-eligible individuals.N/

    The meaning of mainland Portugal beaches and dunes' psammophilic plant communities: a contribution to tourism management and nature conservation

    Due to their position of interface between the sea and land, the flora and vegetation of coastal beaches and dunes, occupy ecologically extreme, sensitive, unique and valuable habitats. The occurrence of a large number of endemic taxa and specific plant associations endowed with key ecological services and adapted to a stressful and harsh environmental gradient, gives them a high interest for nature conservation and an important role in sustainable territorial planning. However, such ecosystems are vulnerable to the disruption caused by several anthropogenic sources. Among other global threat factors, the inevitable sea rise caused by climate change and, at a local scale, the non-negligible implications of trampling caused by disorderly coastal touristic exploitation, growing construction pressure in the littoral, and a seasonal population boom in late spring and in summer, plus all derivate forms of pollution, are threat factors to their integrity. Therefore, a correct planning of the touristic economic activities requires the understanding of the vegetation composition and spatial distribution patterns, intrinsically determined by their biogeographic context in the Euro-Siberian or Mediterranean Regions. This comprehensive work, based on a broad phytogeographic study, brings together disperse information on plant communities of the Portuguese sandy coasts (beaches and dunes), by analysing floristic compositions, chorology and ecological characteristics, and matching them with the “Nature 2000” network habitats. Resilience and vulnerability are also studied. In a nature conservation perspective, a positive balance (and a sustainable co-existence) between the preservation of natural values and human development in the Portuguese coast, will benefit with the integration of this knowledge in coastal planning and management activitie

    A data-driven approach to predict first-year students’ academic success in higher education institutions

    This study presents a data mining approach to predict academic success of the first-year students. A dataset of 10 academic years for first-year bachelor’s degrees from a Portuguese Higher Institution (N = 9652) has been analysed. Features’ selection resulted in a characterising set of 68 features, encompassing socio-demographic, social origin, previous education, special statutes and educational path dimensions. We proposed and tested three distinct course stage data models based on entrance date, end of the first and second curricular semesters. A support vector machines (SVM) model achieved the best overall performance and was selected to conduct a data-based sensitivity analysis. The previous evaluation performance, study gaps and age-related features play a major role in explaining failures at entrance stage. For subsequent stages, current evaluation performance features unveil their predictive power. Suggested guidelines include to provide study support groups to risk profiles and to create monitoring frameworks.     Caracterização da Utilização de Sugamadex no Centro Hospitalar de Lisboa Central - Hospital de S. José

    Introdução O sugamadex é uma gama ciclodextrina modificada que forma um complexo com os bloqueadores neuromusculares rocurónio e vecurónio, revertendo o bloqueio neuromuscular (BNM) induzido por estes fármacos1,2,3,4. O sugamadex apresentou valor terapêutico acrescentado em relação aos anticolinesterásicos, nomeadamente à neostigmina, para a reversão do BNM causado pelo rocurónio e vecurónio1,3. No Hospital de São José (HSJ) este medicamento foi introduzido em Outubro de 2010 para a reversão do BNM profundo e nas situações de risco de vida imediato associadas a via aérea difícil com impossibilidade de ventilar e de entubar. A dispensa do sugamadex é efectuada por reposição de stock mediante envio de justificação clínica aos Serviços Farmacêuticos (SF). Objetivo Caracterizar a utilização de sugamadex no HSJ: evolução do consumo, serviços clínicos utilizadores e adequação da utilização clínica face às indicações aprovadas pela Comissão de Farmácia e Terapêutica (CFT). Métodos Pesquisa e análise bibliográfica. Recolha, através da do sistema de gestão integrada do circuito do medicamento, dos dados de consumo desde Outubro de 2010 até Junho de 2015, por semestre e por serviço clínico. Recolha das indicações terapêuticas em que o sugamadex foi administrado, no período acima referido, através da consulta das justificações clínicas. Análise retrospectiva dos dados recolhidos. Resultados Apresentação gráfica dos consumos de sugamadex nos serviços utilizadores no período em estudo. Conclusões O consumo de sugamadex tem um evidente crescimento desde o seu início de utilização. A justificação dominante para a utilização do sugamadex é a curarização residual. Verifica-se um alargamento do âmbito de utilização, face às indicações aprovadas pela CFT.     Nucleation of the electroactive phase of poly(vinylidene fluoride) by ferrite nanoparticles : surface versus size effects

    Multiferroics and magnetoelectric materials show interesting scientific challenges and technnologial applications in sensors, acuators and data storage. In view of the fact that only a small number of materials show this kind of properties, exhaustive research activity is being pursued towards the development of new composite materials. Multiferroic nanocomposites films composed of piezoelectric poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and magnetostrictive nano-size CoFe2O4, NiFe2O4 or NiZnFe2O4 ferrites were prepared by a solution method. Those ferrite nanoparticles have the ability to nucleate the electroactive -phase of the polymer, providing in this way an easy route for the preparation of magnetoelectric particulate composites. The fact that the different nanoparticles promotes different amount of -phase nucleation for different concentrations of nanoparticles indicates that filler size is not the most important parameter determining phase nucleation but the filler-matrix surface interaction.     Policies for widening participation and success factors in Portuguese higher education

    Portugal’s body of higher education students has progressively expanded, and opportunities for graduate certification at this level have multiplied. This paper advances factors that may provide a differentiated explanation of successful paths in higher education. It gives a first-hand account of the recent dynamics of participation in higher education in Portugal within the Bologna Process and uses institutional statistics to compare some of its most relevant characteristics with the European framework as a whole. Secondly, we used an extensive survey of Portuguese higher education students to identify factors potentially involved in successful paths and conducted a multiple logistic binary regression. The resulting model therefore included not only social and educational characteristics and backgrounds but also previous school trajectories, attendance of educational institutions and everyday practices. It identified key factors for success in academic careers by reference to a specific policy context and attendance of higher education. Our definition of these factors (dimensions of analysis) was based on the proposals of Tinto (2006; 1997) and Pinto (2002), using the variables available in that survey.
