New variational problems with an action depending on generalized fractional derivatives, the free endpoint conditions, and a real parameter

This work presents optimality conditions for several fractional variational problems where the Lagrange function depends on fractional order operators, the initial and final state values, and a free parameter. The fractional derivatives considered in this paper are the Riemann–Liouville and the Caputo derivatives with respect to an arbitrary kernel. The new variational problems studied here are generalizations of several types of variational problems, and therefore, our results generalize well-known results from the fractional calculus of variations. Namely, we prove conditions useful to determine the optimal orders of the fractional derivatives and necessary optimality conditions involving time delays and arbitrary real positive fractional orders. Sufficient conditions for such problems are also studied. Illustrative examples are provided.publishe

A generalization of a fractional variational problem with dependence on the boundaries and a real parameter

    Get PDF
In this paper, we present a new fractional variational problem where the Lagrangian depends not only on the independent variable, an unknown function and its left- and right-sided Caputo fractional derivatives with respect to another function, but also on the endpoint conditions and a free parameter. The main results of this paper are necessary and sufficient optimality conditions for variational problems with or without isoperimetric and holonomic restrictions. Our results not only provide a generalization to previous results but also give new contributions in fractional variational calculus. Finally, we present some examples to illustrate our results.publishe

Fractional variational principle of Herglotz for a new class of problems with dependence on the boundaries and a real parameter

    Get PDF
The fractional variational problem of Herglotz type for the case where the Lagrangian depends on generalized fractional derivatives, the free endpoints conditions, and a real parameter is studied. This type of problem generalizes several problems recently studied in the literature. Moreover, it allows us to unify conservative and non-conservative dynamical processes in the same model. The dependence of the Lagrangian with respect to the boundaries and a free parameter is effective and transforms the standard Herglotz’s variational problem into a problem of a different nature.publishe

Neurocognitive improvement through plant food bioactives: A particular approach to Alzheimer's disease

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is currently one of the most prevalent neurodegenerative disorders, directly related to increasing rates of morbidity and autonomy impairment between worldwide citizens. Social and demographical changes are direct contributors; notwithstanding, modern lifestyle, oxidative stress and its related diseases, and, consequently, premature aging are also important triggering factors (Sun et al. 2008; Ngo and Li 2013). Numerous drugs have been developed mainly to act as symptomatic agents, despite the serious side effects and increasing evidences of lack of effectiveness. Most of them were derived from plant-mimetic synthesis, but tenuous differences on their chemical structure and also the occurrence of synergisms in the pool of the whole plant phytochemicals are sufficient to provide considerable influences on the final biological potential (Ngo and Li 2013; Katalini et al. 2014; Ahmed et al. 2015). The use of medicinal plants, mainly through botanical preparations, is a millenary practice, which has been effectively used for a multitude of health conditions (Vanaclocha and Cañigueral 2003; Murray 2004; Murray and Pizzorno 2012). The interest for natural matrices is still increasing, not only to confirm its bioactive potential, but also to deepen knowledge on the modes of action, metabolism, bioavailability, bioefficacy, and active concentrations, aiming to develop upcoming and safer alternatives to the current ones. Among them, plant phytochemicals have shown to have promissory neurocognitive properties. In this sense, the present chapter aims to provide systematic information about the use of plant-food-derived bioactive molecules with evident in vitro and in vivo neuroprotective and neuroregenerative effects.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Herglotz variational problems involving distributed-order fractional derivatives with arbitrary smooth kernels

In this paper, we consider Herglotz-type variational problems dealing with fractional derivatives of distributed-order with respect to another function. We prove necessary optimality conditions for the Herglotz fractional variational problem with and without time delay, with higher-order derivatives, and with several independent variables. Since the Herglotz-type variational problem is a generalization of the classical variational problem, our main results generalize several results from the fractional calculus of variations. To illustrate the theoretical developments included in this paper, we provide some examplepublishe
