Frictions, cracks and micro-resistances: physical activity and sport as strategies to dignify imprisoned women
Discipline and control are key concepts within industrial and capitalist societies. In this context, prisons are a warning tool about the consequences of non-conformity [Foucault, M., 1995. Discipline and Punish: The birth of Prison. NY: Vintage Books]. As a result, punitive power is used as a corrective technique to transform prisoners into docile and useful citizen. However, power in prison is no static and inmates can create various strategies of resistance. The aim of this research is to understand how physical activity and sport are used by incarcerated women to confront social control and negotiate power relations. Underpinned within a critical feminist epistemology, we interviewed 16 women about their prison sports experience. According to the interviewees, physical activity and sport helped them to cope with the sentence while it was a useful tool confronting and negotiating the patriarchal punitive power. The women pointed out that the prison did not fully subdue them. Also, they highlighted their abilities to minimally destabilize the prison order. This enabled them to regain some autonomy and identity, while opposing to the total institution. CrossCarry: An R package for the analysis of data from a crossover design with GEE
Experimental crossover designs are widely used in medicine, agriculture, and
other areas of the biological sciences. Due to the characteristics of the
crossover design, each experimental unit has longitudinal observations and the
presence of drag effects on the response variable. There is no package in {R}
that clearly models data from crossover designs. The {CrossCarry} package
presented in this paper allows testing any crossover design as long as the
observed response variable belongs to the exponential family, regardless of
whether or not there is a washout period. It also allows modeling repeated
measurements within each period and extends the correlation structures used in
the generalized estimating equations. The family of correlation structures is
built that takes into account the particularities of the design, that is, the
correlation between and within the periods. It also includes a parametric
component for modeling treatment effects and a non-parametric component for
modeling time effects and carry-over effects. The non-parametric component is
estimated from splines inserted into the generalized estimation equations
Abrupt wind regime changes in the North Atlantic Ocean during the past 30,000-60,000 years
The inputs of higher plants in Blake Outer Ridge (subtropical western North Atlantic) during marine
isotope stage 3 (MIS3) have been recorded at high resolution by quantification of C23–C33 odd carbon
numbered n-alkanes and C20–C30 even carbon numbered n-alkan-1-ols in sediment sections of Ocean Drilling
Program Site 1060. The changes of these proxies at this open marine site are mainly related to eolian inputs. Their concentrations and fluxes exhibit major abrupt variations that are correlated with Dansgaard/Oeschger (D/O) patterns in Greenland ice cores. The ratios between interstadials and stadials range between 2 and 9 times. The intense flux increases in the D/O stadials are linked to strong enhancements of the westerly wind regime at these subtropical latitudes during stadials. The observed variation was paralleled by changes in wind-blown dust and the polar circulation index in Greenland ice, which is in agreement with previously hypothesized atmospheric teleconnections between northern and middle-low latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere. The close correspondence between sedimentary and ice core proxies is evidence that crossings of the glacial climate thresholds involved major reorganizations of the troposphere. The observed large rise in higher plant biomarkers indicates that climate stabilization in the D/O stadial conditions led to main increases in wind intensity
A causal model of radiating stellar collapse
We find a simple exact model of radiating stellar collapse, with a shear-free
and non-accelerating interior matched to a Vaidya exterior. The heat flux is
subject to causal thermodynamics, leading to self-consistent determination of
the temperature . We solve for exactly when the mean collision time
is constant, and perturbatively in a more realistic case of variable
. Causal thermodynamics predicts temperature behaviour that can
differ significantly from the predictions of non-causal theory. In particular,
the causal theory gives a higher central temperature and greater temperature
