Spatial productivity spillovers across Spanish municipalities
Whilst a great deal of e€ort has been dedicated to identification of agglomeration effects on labour productivity, the measurement of spatial productivity spillovers is a question that has been addressed only occasionally along the New Economic Geography literature. We estimate agglomeration effects, nonetheless conditioned to the possible existence of spatial productivity spillovers across Spanish municipalities in year 2001. To this respect, we find that agglomeration effects are in the same order of magnitude than thoseencountered when measured in the standard way. Further, these agglomeration efects coexist with very strong spatial productivity spillovers in a close neighbourhood of 10 km. The European Map of Job Flows
The European Map of Job Flows (EMJF) is a term used to denote a dataset of meso- and macro-level variables describing different aspect of labour mobility within national labour markets in Europe. In this paper, EMJF is centred on the notion of job âflowsâ, namely the changes in the level of employment at different breakdowns and levels of aggregation. EMJF is very rich in information content due to the wide variety of possible breakdown of the data and in this sense it is a âmapâ mostly in the virtual sense, namely, that it is not possible to visualise in the form of geographic maps all the wealth of available information. In terms of its value as a research product and tool, EMJF is mostly an intermediate product in the sense that it is a convenient means to organise the relevant information, which could subsequently be used for different analytical and research purposes. It provides both for cross-sections/snapshots of job flows at different point in time but also it allows their assessment and analysis over longer periods of time. In this sense, EMJF can be widely used for various types of labour-market analysis and research. EMJFâs visual components can also be a convenient tool for policy makers dealing with labour market policies at different level (regional, national or supra-national) in the decision-making process. Here we present a Compilation of a EMJF on the basis of firm-level data In this sense the job flows are built up on the basis of firm-level data for individual countries, following a common methodology. We adopt an approach of establishing such a EMJF on the basis of the AMADEUS dataset developed by the consultancy Bureau van Dijk. The dataset in its most extended version contains balance sheet data and ownership data for almost 14 million firms from 43 different European countries (September 2009 update). For many EU countries the dataset has in principle access to the entire universe of firms which have to report a balance sheet. In terms of countries, the geographic coverage of AMADEUS encompasses information for all the 27 members of the European Union (albeit with different qualities in terms of national coverage) as well as other 16 European countries that complete the geographical and political definition of the continent. Another interesting feature of the database is given by the detailed definition of a firm's location, with data available on the region (NUTS2) and the city in which the firm operates. This project deliverable presents the main results from the final stage of MICRO-DYN work on the EMJF. It discusses the approach to building the EMJF on the basis of AMADEUS data and illustrates the analytical potential of the EMJF as a research tool with a range of Europe-wide analytical exercises. A facile quantitative assay for viral particle genesis reveals cooperativity in virion assembly and saturation of an antiviral protein
Conventional assays of viral particle assembly and release are time consuming and laborious. We have developed an enzymatic virus-like particle (VLP) genesis assay that rapid and quantitative and is also versatile and applicable to diverse viruses including HIV-1 and Ebola virus. Using this assay, which has a dynamic range of several orders of magnitude, we show that the efficiency of VLP assembly and release, i.e., the fraction of the expressed protein that is assembled into extracellular particles, is dependent on the absolute level of expression of either HIV-1 Gag or Ebola virus VP40. We also demonstrate that the activity of the antiviral factor tetherin is dependent on the level of HIV-1 Gag expression and the numbers of VLPs generated, and appears to become saturated as these parameters are increased
X-ray Spectra of the RIXOS source sample
We present results of an extensive study of the X-ray spectral properties of
sources detected in the RIXOS survey, that is nearly complete down to a flux
limit of 3e-14 cgs (0.5-2 keV). We show that for X-ray surveys containing
sources with low count rate spectral slopes estimated using simple hardness
ratios in the ROSAT band can be biased. Instead we analyse three-colour X-ray
data using statistical techniques appropriate to the Poisson regime which
removes the effects of this bias. We have then applied this technique to the
RIXOS survey to study the spectral properties of the sample. For the AGN we
find an average energy index of 1.05+-0.05 with no evidence for spectral
evolution with redshift. Individual AGN are shown to have a range of properties
including soft X-ray excesses and intrinsic absorption. Narrow Emission Line
Galaxies also seem to fit to a power-law spectrum, which may indicate a
non-thermal origin for their X-ray emission. We infer that most of the clusters
in the sample have a bremsstrahlung temperature >3 keV, although some show
evidence for a cooling flow. The stars deviate strongly from a power-law model
but fit to a thermal model. Finally, we have analysed the whole RIXOS sample
containing 1762 sources. We find that the mean spectral slope of the sources
hardens at lower fluxes in agreement with results from other samples. However,
a study of the individual sources demonstrates that the hardening of the mean
is caused by the appearance of a population of very hard sources at the lowest

Networks of strong ties
Social networks transmitting covert or sensitive information cannot use all
ties for this purpose. Rather, they can only use a subset of ties that are
strong enough to be ``trusted''. In this paper we consider transitivity as
evidence of strong ties, requiring that each tie can only be used if the
individuals on either end also share at least one other contact in common. We
examine the effect of removing all non-transitive ties in two real social
network data sets. We observe that although some individuals become
disconnected, a giant connected component remains, with an average shortest
path only slightly longer than that of the original network. We also evaluate
the cost of forming transitive ties by deriving the conditions for the
emergence and the size of the giant component in a random graph composed
entirely of closed triads and the equivalent Erdos-Renyi random graph.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figure
Properties of Healthcare Teaming Networks as a Function of Network Construction Algorithms
Network models of healthcare systems can be used to examine how providers
collaborate, communicate, refer patients to each other. Most healthcare service
network models have been constructed from patient claims data, using billing
claims to link patients with providers. The data sets can be quite large,
making standard methods for network construction computationally challenging
and thus requiring the use of alternate construction algorithms. While these
alternate methods have seen increasing use in generating healthcare networks,
there is little to no literature comparing the differences in the structural
properties of the generated networks. To address this issue, we compared the
properties of healthcare networks constructed using different algorithms and
the 2013 Medicare Part B outpatient claims data. Three different algorithms
were compared: binning, sliding frame, and trace-route. Unipartite networks
linking either providers or healthcare organizations by shared patients were
built using each method. We found that each algorithm produced networks with
substantially different topological properties. Provider networks adhered to a
power law, and organization networks to a power law with exponential cutoff.
Censoring networks to exclude edges with less than 11 shared patients, a common
de-identification practice for healthcare network data, markedly reduced edge
numbers and greatly altered measures of vertex prominence such as the
betweenness centrality. We identified patterns in the distance patients travel
between network providers, and most strikingly between providers in the
Northeast United States and Florida. We conclude that the choice of network
construction algorithm is critical for healthcare network analysis, and discuss
the implications for selecting the algorithm best suited to the type of
