Microgrids & District Energy: Pathways To Sustainable Urban Development
A microgrid is an energy system specifically designed to meet some of the energy needs of a group of buildings, a campus, or an entire community. It can include local facilities that generate electricity, heating, and/or cooling; store energy; distribute the energy generated; and manage energy consumption intelligently and in real time. Microgrids enable economies of scale that facilitate local production of energy in ways that can advance cost reduction, sustainability, economic development, and resilience goals. As they often involve multiple stakeholders, and may encompass numerous distinct property boundaries, municipal involvement is often a key factor for successful implementation.
This report provides an introduction to microgrid concepts, identifies the benefits and most common road blocks to implementation, and discusses proactive steps municipalities can take to advance economically viable and environmentally superior microgrids. It also offers advocacy suggestions for municipal leaders and officials to pursue at the state and regional level. The contents are targeted to municipal government staff but anyone looking for introductory material on microgrids should find it useful
Engaging Older Adults in the Participatory Design of Intelligent Health Search Tools
Engaging older adults (adults 65+) in technology design can be challenging. At the same time, it is becoming ever more important to ensure inclusion of diverse perspectives in design research. Several strategies currently exist for successfully recruiting and engaging older adults in design. However, there is still much to learn about how to effectively engage older adults in the design process.
In this position paper, we reflect on our experiences engaging older adults in participatory design of "smart" tools for health information search. We share our study design, including our recruitment process and procedures. We then discuss the strategies we used in the design process and challenges we encountered when designing and implementing our research protocol. We contribute our experiences in an effort to facilitate discussion of strategies and opportunities for including older adults in design research
Dispersion of Magnetic Fields in Molecular Clouds. III
We apply our technique on the dispersion of magnetic fields in molecular
clouds to high spatial resolution Submillimeter Array polarization data
obtained for Orion KL in OMC-1, IRAS 16293, and NGC 1333 IRAS 4A. We show how
one can take advantage of such high resolution data to characterize the
magnetized turbulence power spectrum in the inertial and dissipation ranges.
For Orion KL we determine that in the inertial range the spectrum can be
approximately fitted with a power law k^-(2.9\pm0.9) and we report a value of
9.9 mpc for {\lambda}_AD, the high spatial frequency cutoff presumably due to
turbulent ambipolar diffusion. For the same parameters we have \sim
k^-(1.4\pm0.4) and a tentative value of {\lambda}_AD \simeq 2.2 mpc for NGC
1333 IRAS 4A, and \sim k^-(1.8\pm0.3) with an upper limit of {\lambda}_AD < 1.8
mpc for IRAS 16293. We also discuss the application of the technique to
interferometry measurements and the effects of the inherent spatial filtering

Exploring Older Adults’ Beliefs About the Use of Intelligent Assistants for Consumer Health Information Management: A Participatory Design Study
Background: Intelligent assistants (IAs), also known as intelligent agents, use artificial intelligence to help users achieve a goal or complete a task. IAs represent a potential solution for providing older adults with individualized assistance at home, for example, to reduce social isolation, serve as memory aids, or help with disease management. However, to design IAs for health that are beneficial and accepted by older adults, it is important to understand their beliefs about IAs, how they would like to interact with IAs for consumer health, and how they desire to integrate IAs into their homes.
Objective: We explore older adults’ mental models and beliefs about IAs, the tasks they want IAs to support, and how they would like to interact with IAs for consumer health. For the purpose of this study, we focus on IAs in the context of consumer health information management and search.
Methods: We present findings from an exploratory, qualitative study that investigated older adults’ perspectives of IAs that aid with consumer health information search and management tasks. Eighteen older adults participated in a multiphase, participatory design workshop in which we engaged them in discussion, brainstorming, and design activities that helped us identify their current challenges managing and finding health information at home. We also explored their beliefs and ideas for an IA to assist them with consumer health tasks. We used participatory design activities to identify areas in which they felt IAs might be useful, but also to uncover the reasoning behind the ideas they presented. Discussions were audio-recorded and later transcribed. We compiled design artifacts collected during the study to supplement researcher transcripts and notes. Thematic analysis was used to analyze data.
Results: We found that participants saw IAs as potentially useful for providing recommendations, facilitating collaboration between themselves and other caregivers, and for alerts of serious illness. However, they also desired familiar and natural interactions with IAs (eg, using voice) that could, if need be, provide fluid and unconstrained interactions, reason about their symptoms, and provide information or advice. Other participants discussed the need for flexible IAs that could be used by those with low technical resources or skills.
Conclusions: From our findings, we present a discussion of three key components of participants’ mental models, including the people, behaviors, and interactions they described that were important for IAs for consumer health information management and seeking. We then discuss the role of access, transparency, caregivers, and autonomy in design for addressing participants’ concerns about privacy and trust as well as its role in assisting others that may interact with an IA on the older adults’ behalf
Predictive Value of POSSUM and ACPGBI Scoring in Mortality and Morbidity of Colorectal Resection: A Case–Control Study

97239.pdf (publisher's version ) (Open Access)BACKGROUND: Preoperative risk prediction to assess mortality and morbidity may be helpful to surgical decision making. The aim of this study was to compare mortality and morbidity of colorectal resections performed in a tertiary referral center with mortality and morbidity as predicted with physiological and operative score for enumeration of mortality and morbidity (POSSUM), Portsmouth POSSUM (P-POSSUM), and colorectal POSSUM (CR-POSSUM). The second aim of this study was to analyze the accuracy of different POSSUM scores in surgery performed for malignancy, inflammatory bowel diseases, and diverticulitis. POSSUM scoring was also evaluated in colorectal resection in acute vs. elective setting. In procedures performed for malignancy, the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland (ACPGBI) score was assessed in the same way for comparison. METHODS: POSSUM, P-POSSUM, and CR-POSSUM predictor equations for mortality were applied in a retrospective case-control study to 734 patients who had undergone colorectal resection. The total group was assessed first. Second, the predictive value of outcome after surgery was assessed for malignancy (n = 386), inflammatory bowel diseases (n = 113), diverticulitis (n = 91), and other indications, e.g., trauma, endometriosis, volvulus, or ischemia (n = 144). Third, all subgroups were assessed in relation to the setting in which surgery was performed: acute or elective. In patients with malignancy, the ACPGBI score was calculated as well. In all groups, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were constructed. RESULTS: POSSUM, P-POSSUM, and CR-POSSUM have a significant predictive value for outcome after colorectal surgery. Within the total population as well as in all four subgroups, there is no difference in the area under the curve between the POSSUM, P-POSSUM, and CR-POSSUM scores. In the subgroup analysis, smallest areas under the ROC curve are seen in operations performed for malignancy, which is significantly worse than for diverticulitis and in operations performed for other indications. For elective procedures, P-POSSUM and CR-POSSUM predict outcome significantly worse in patients operated for carcinoma than in patients with diverticulitis. In acute surgical interventions, CR-POSSUM predicts mortality better in diverticulitis than in patients operated for other indications. The ACPGBI score has a larger area under the curve than any of the POSSUM scores. Morbidity as predicted by POSSUM is most accurate in procedures for diverticulitis and worst when the indication is malignancy. CONCLUSION: The POSSUM scores predict outcome significantly better than can be expected by chance alone. Regarding the indication for surgery, each POSSUM score predicts outcome in patients operated for diverticulitis or other indications more accurately than for malignancy. The ACPGBI score is found to be superior to the various POSSUM scores in patients who have (elective) resection of colorectal malignancy
SMA Imaging of the Maser Emission from the H30 Radio Recombination Line in MWC349A
We used the Submillimeter Array to map the angular distribution of the
H30 recombination line (231.9 GHz) in the circumstellar region of the
peculiar star MWC349A. The resolution was 1\farcs2, but because of high
signal-to-noise ratio we measured the positions of all maser components to
accuracies better than 0\farcs01, at a velocity resolution of . The
two strongest maser components (called high velocity components) at velocities
near -14 and are separated by 0\farcs048 \pm 0\farcs001 (60 AU)
along a position angle of 102 \pm 1\arcdeg. The distribution of maser
emission at velocities between and beyond these two strongest components were
also provided. The continuum emission lies at the center of the maser
distribution to within 10 mas. The masers appear to trace a nearly edge-on
rotating disk structure, reminiscent of the water masers in Keplerian rotation
in the nuclear accretion disk of the galaxy NGC4258. However, the maser
components in MWC349A do not follow a simple Keplerian kinematic prescription
with , but have a larger power law index. We explore the
possibility that the high velocity masers trace spiral density or shock waves.
We also emphasize caution in the interpretation of relative centroid maser
positions where the maser is not clearly resolved in position or velocity, and
we present simulations that illustrate the range of applicability of the

Droplet Fluctuations in the Morphology and Kinetics of Martensites
We derive a coarse grained, free-energy functional which describes droplet
configurations arising on nucleation of a product crystal within a parent. This
involves a new `slow' vacancy mode that lives at the parent-product interface.
A mode-coupling theory suggests that a {\it slow} quench from the parent phase
produces an equilibrium product, while a {\it fast} quench produces a
metastable martensite. In two dimensions, the martensite nuclei grow as
`lens-shaped' strips having alternating twin domains, with well-defined front
velocities. Several empirically known structural and kinetic relations drop out
